.HAPPY NEW YEAR! 2019 is starting off to be great, and I’m looking forward to the honor of serving the Woodland Hills Rock Chippers as President. I’m planning a lot of fun and exciting things that will suit every rock hound interest. Expect field trips, great programs, and amazing classes, to name a few. The first business meeting of the year took place on January 5
th at
Thalia’s home, and any future board meetings will be held on the first Saturday of each month. Regular meetings will still be held on the third Saturday from 7-9:30pm. This month’s meeting will have a presentation on antique Yemenite Jewish tribal jewelry presented by the newly appointed president (oh yes… that’s me). Being that this is my first time presenting…have mercy! I invite everyone to please submit any ideas that may be related to the bettering of our club.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the January 19
th meeting.

Hardness Picks
These pencil-like hardness picks enable you to do more precise and accurate hardness testing. They tips are made with special alloys that approximate the hardness of minerals in the Mohs Scale for hardness-es of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Available in a plastic field case or a wooden case for the office. Know-ing the hardness of the rocks you are tumbling helps you identify them and know which rocks are compatible for tumbling.

Gary Levitt [email protected] Back in February!
We will be meeting on January 20th at 9:30 am. Current
badge projects are ongoing plus we will have a craft project
as time allows. Junior guests are always welcome providing
their parent accompanies them. Remember to bring your notebooks so we can
keep up to date with the checklists.
Society Traveling Showcase The theme for the 2019 showcase is "Rough and Ready". Our intention is to show both rough
and finished pieces of various materials. Please bring any combos you are willing to share until
the end of the year. We will be setting up the case in February, so it will be ready for the
Ventura club's show, the first weekend in March. If you can't bring your items to the January
meeting, call or email Thalia about dropping them off.
The Board of Directors will approve the schedule of shows and events where we will display our
showcase. Volunteers will be needed to take the materials to the event locations, set up the
display and when the event closes to repackage the items and return them to Thalia for storage
until the next event. If you would like to help, either with the display design or show set-ups, let
Thalia know.

Learn how to fuse dichroic glass into "cabochons" for jewelry making. Sign-up for the January class on either the 12th or the13th, choose one day. There are spaces for only two participants on Saturday, and three on Sunday. We will meet at Thalia's home from 10 am. to 2 pm. Class Fee is $35.00. This covers materials and use of tools to make four 1 x 2 inch piec-es (or other shapes and sizes using that amount of glass). Depending on the firing and cooling timing you will take home one finished piece. Remaining pieces will be fired as the kiln be-comes available, and will be brought to the January general meeting. Bring tweezers, if you have them, and a lunch.
DICHROIC GLASS FUSING January 12th and 13th-10am to 2pm

THE DAWN SPACECRAFT AT CERES, THE LARGEST ASTEROID
Location: Geology 3656
Time: 2:30PM
Ceres has the largest water content among large asteroids. After orbiting asteroid Ves-
ta for 14 months, the Dawn spacecraft used its solar-electric propulsion system to
move to Ceres and orbit it. During three years at Ceres, Dawn observed anomalous
ammonium, vexatious volcanoes, wandering water ice, freaky flows, effervescent evap-
orites, capricious carbon, and many more peculiarities. Ceres’ properties suggest that it
is an evolved CM chondrite.

Woodland Hills Rock Chippers, Incorporated
Our organization, a non-profit corporation, was formed for educational and instructive purposes: to foster collection and study of minerals, to disseminate knowledge about them, to sponsor field trips to find them, to encourage the use of them in lapidary and faceting studies, etc. And to have one whale of a good time doing those things with all of our friends. Regular meetings are held on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Re-freshments are at 6:30 p.m. Field trips are at various times throughout the month. Guests are always welcome to attend. Membership is open to interested applicants after they have attended at least two meetings. Annual dues are due in November for the following year.
