The Family Manby Elinor Lipman
Reviewed by: Judy Cummings
I can’t think of a better way to celebrate sixty years of the National Book Award than reviewing this story. SALVAGE THE BONES is the 2011 winner for fiction. Previous award winners have become classics and some have faded with the passage of time. This one will be a classic. It seems that this book was off the radar for most of us. Thank goodness it was brought to our attention!!
The narrator of the story is Esch, fourteen, black, poor, and pregnant. The story is told in twelve chap-ters, twelve days leading up to the arrival of Hurricane Katrina in the fictional town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi. The skill of this author is such that she tells you of this family’s crushing poverty without evok-ing your pity, but making you understand that this is a fact of their lives - chickens, abandoned cars, a falling down house, and never enough food.
Esch and her three brothers are puzzled as their sometimes drunken father makes preparations for the arrival of the hurricane. Their mother is gone, having died giving birth to the youngest sibling, Junior. Esch’s brother Skeetah has a pitbull, China, who has given birth to a litter of puppies. These puppies represent cash for this fam-ily and a chance for older brother Randall to attend a basketball summer camp. Skeetah loves China as only a boy can, but con-tinues to enter her in illegal dog fights. Some of these scenes are so powerful that I felt an impending sense of doom, put the book down, and walked away. The writing is so incredible that I was soon back - I had to know how they would get through. The hurricane scenes are similar in their intensity and will give you a better understanding of what survival in the face disaster is like. This is a story of family, of poverty, of hope, a poetic story that you will never forget.
