In Ancient Rome “children are the future” meant that children have no value in the present, which meant they didn’t have any rights and so it was commonplace for children to be neglected. Christ’s belief that children are the present was counter-cultural then, and in many ways, it’s counter- cultural now. Isaiah told us that “a child would lead the way” in the form of baby Jesus, and then Jesus said “all who welcome a child welcome me.” For Christians children are models of faith—challenging us to keep our faith simple and bold. For us, the faith of a child giving away her allowance to Indian orphans can be as inspiring as a hundred sermons from an adult preacher. Watching a child sing in worship has inspired many parents to be more intentional about growing their own faith. I can’t tell you how many times a parent has confessed to me that their child brought them back to church. At Harbor we spotlight children each Sunday in worship with our “Children’s Time,” and we encourage parents to get their children involved with church mission projects, like our Food Ministry, our outreach to Mary C. Williams Elementary, and our ZOE project. We even have a Harbor mission team for children called “Mission Mariners,” which participates in local mission projects. At Harbor… children are the present. With that said, our stewardship focus in August will be Harbor’s children’s ministry and all our outreach efforts to all kids. As fall approaches and we settle back into our routines, we challenge you to continue to support Harbor’s children. We want to ensure that our children’s ministry has all the resources they need to thrive and grow this fall, but we need your help. On the evening of Wednesday, September 4 th , Harbor is having a Mac and Cheese Cook-off to raise money for our children’s ministry. We will then tithe 10% of the proceeds and give it to our outreach to Mary C. Williams Elementary. You are invited to come, cook your best Mac and Cheese, have fun, and give generously to our children’s ministry! In Christ’s Service, Pastor Russ

Harbor family, The cliché we’ve all heard is that “children are the future,” but Christ taught us that children are also the present. In Ancient Rome “children are the future” meant that children have no value in the present, which meant they didn’t have any rights and so it was commonplace for children to be neglected. Congregational Care Ministry (CCM)

What is Congregational Care Ministry? As our congregation grows, our pastors spend a good bit of

time on “crisis” situations. Harbor needs to have a ministry

that cares for everyone, not just those in crises--thus, the

creation of Congregational Care Ministry.

Caring for, Connecting and Communicating with

Harbor members and friends in an intentional,

Responsible manner that will have a Spiritual

Impact and meet their needs, as we

Strive to worship and fellowship

Together as the Body of Christ.

Simply stated; we are more than two dozen caring, friendly

people trying diligently to contact each of you every month.

We just want you to know that we care about you and are

glad you are a part of our congregation. We will answer

questions you may have or find the answer to your questions

if we do not know them. You will not be asked for a

commitment of any kind. We just want to invite you to enjoy

the numerous opportunities for Christian Fellowship as we

strive to be the church God intends us to be.

The Congregational Care

Ministry is made up of a

steering/mentor committee and

individual tugboat captains

helping our Fellowship Ministry

reach out to all Harbor

attendees. We currently have 28

Tugboat Captains. Captains make 10-12 attendee/member

contacts by phone, e-mail, written note, face-to-face

conversation or a voicemail each month. Captains meet three

times a year. Consider joining Congregational Care Ministry

as a Tugboat Captain.

Next Congregational Care Ministry Steering/Mentor meeting

is scheduled for Monday, August 12, 2019 @ 1:00 PM in

Room 106.

August 11, 2019 is Harbor Congregational Care Ministry

Prayer Sunday. The Congregational Care team wants

everyone to be a part of Prayer Sunday.

As Harbor grows so will our need for Tugboat Captains.

Consider serving in Congregational Care. Contact Mike or

Cheryl Landry @ 910-617-5226 or [email protected]

Last month Harbor VBS donated almost $500 to our ZOE orphans in India. These 82 orphans in

the slums of Chennai are learning how to develop their own businesses, stay healthy, learn about

their rights as children, and grow as a community.

Harbor is truly blessed to have generous children who want to help other children that are living on

the other side of the world.

If you want to learn more about Harbor’s commitment to ZOE orphans, there is a notebook of stories and pictures in the East Lighthouse.

Last Call! If you have been considering Stephen

Ministry training, which begins in September, now is the time to act!

Here’s what one Stephen Minister has to say about her experience as a Stephen Minister:

“Stephen Ministry has enhanced every relationship I have. Now I can listen and be there without feeling like I have to rush in and try to fix things. I’m much more at peace in difficult situations because I realize that it’s not me, but Christ within me, who does the work.” Yvette

Harbor’s Stephen Leaders would love to talk with you about the nudge you might be feeling to serve in this vital and very rewarding ministry. To schedule an interview contact: Terri Brooks, [email protected] or 910-452-7202, ext 101 Carolyn Dolan at [email protected]
