Greetings from
The Co-President
“Summertime and the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high
Your daddy’s rich and your ma is good lookin’
So hush little baby, don’t you cry. “
George Gershwin from “Porgy and
Bess”
I am sure we have all heard this great old song! It was made famous again by Fantasia Barrino, the 2004 American Idol winner in her haunting rendition. When I thought about this song today, it reminded me of two things. One is that it is almost “summertime”, and that we often think that “the livin’ is easy” in the sum-mer. School is out, children and grandchildren are home, it is great beach weather and we want to enjoy that time! And that is great! We refresh and re-energize ourselves when we have fun, relax with fam-ily and friends and forget our cares for a time! Many of our UMW units do not meet in the summer, which gives us more time to relax and take it easy! However, we need to remember that there is still work to be done, and that the needs of our community and world do not go away in the sum-mer!
The second thing that I was reminded of by this song is that for some people, including babies, the livin’ is never easy! And we must not forget that!
So what should we do? One thing is to take ad-vantage of the opportuni-ties we have to learn more about mission and the needs all around us. One of these opportuni-ties is the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ) Quad-rennial Meeting of United Methodist Women in Charleston, SC, June 3-5. There is information about registration and transportation to this meeting in the current issue of KEDE, which you should have received; and in this newsletter.
Another opportunity is Mission u, which will be held July 21-23 at Meth-odist University in Fayetteville. The three studies to be offered there include: Latin America, Climate Justice and Human Sexuality. The teachers for mission u are all excellent and well-versed in their sub-ject matter. Again, infor-mation and the registra-tion form can be found in KEDE and in this news-letter.
Since one of our UMW Social Action Priorities for 2016 is Maternal and Child Health, we can
work to improve the lives of pregnant women and their babies. Locally, we might consider making Layette kits and donating them to our local Health Departments or to institutions on our North Carolina Conference UMW Project List. A new institution now on this list is the Diaper Bank of NC - Lower Cape Fear, which is located in Wil-mington. Check them out on their Facebook page for their phone number and ways you may be able to help! You may also want to check with your local health department and find out if there are ways your UMW unit can be of help to their maternity and/or child health clinics. Hospitals can benefit from the cute knitted caps that many UMW units already donate to them for their newborns. And I am sure that there are many oth-er ways we can help to better the lives of pregnant women, new mothers and their in-fants. These are just a few ideas.
Also, when we give our mon-ey through UMW Mission Giving, countless mothers and infants, both here in the United States and around the world receive the benefit.
I would challenge you to find new and better ways to con-tinue to help improve the lives of pregnant women, mothers and their children.

Upcoming Annual Meeting
Happy Spring to all of you UMW sisters! I'm sure you're wondering why this article on our annual meeting here in April; but as we all encounter how time flies, this event will be here before we know it. On October 22 at First UMC in Clinton, I hope to see a record break-ing number of UM Women representing all of the Har-bor District coming together to share individual and unit accomplishments. And what better way to do this, than for each of you to share some of your local units social actions. I am requesting, from as many of you who will respond, to send me one, or two or three photos of a social action event with a few descriptive sentences that I can use in a visual presentation at our meeting. I realize all units fill out and submit a Social Action Report by August 15, but there are many mission events that go unrecognized. Let's see how many different ways we have impacted the lives of women and children during this 2016 year with the Quadrennial Theme to Provide. You may send me any information and photos starting now through October 15 at [email protected] Let's surprise each oth-er with all of our accomplishments!Marie Millis Vice Presi-

Presidents and Secretaries, at-tached is a list of corrections for your Harbor District directory. We are still missing contact infor-mation for some of our churches and we do not want to leave anyone out of our correspond-ence. Please use the forms in your directory on pages 93 and 94 to submit information about the officers at your unit. I hope that all units are documenting their meetings and retaining this documentation for historical ref-erence. Your minutes are an im-portant source of information to those who are unable to attend a meeting and a reference to what was decided at a meeting. By sending the minutes out to the attendees as soon as possi-ble after the meeting, it is easier to insure that everyone concurs with the results of the meeting. If I can be of assistance, please contact me. Susie Lupton, District
Secretary, [email protected], 910-371

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
VIOLA SHEW
For this issue of HARBOR TIDINGS, we would like to spotlight a lady who is an outstanding member of the Harbor District Unit-ed Methodist Women. Viola Shew, who will celebrate her 93
rd
birthday on June 15th
is currently president of the Shiloh (Maco) unit, an office she has held for eight years. Viola became a UMW member sometime in the 1960’s as her six sons were growing up and she had just a little bit of free time! Of course, the organiza-tion, at this time, was called the “Women’s Society of Christian Service” or WSCS. Viola followed in the footsteps of her mother, Viola Mintz Freeman, who was also president of the Shiloh unit for a number of years.
In addition to her current term as president, Viola was also presi-dent for a four year term in the past and has been vice president and treasurer of the Shiloh unit. She was also Brunswick Sub-district leader from 1970-72.
Viola is very dedicated to United Methodist Women. Even when she was not president, she never missed a meeting! As her daughter-in-law, I remember visiting her and my father-in-law on Sunday afternoons. She would always remind us of the dates that she would be attending UMW meetings, so that if we planned to visit on that Sunday, we would know she would not be home!
Viola takes UMW work very seriously. Despite their small size, the Shiloh unit is very active in District work and activities. They always attend ALOTS/Cluster meetings, Mission Studies, and other district functions. A couple of years ago, when Viola was sick, she was very disappointed that she had to miss a Mission Study, for which she had prepared by reading the book, and was looking forward to attending! Her unit always makes and honors their District Pledge to Mission.
Viola loves reading all the Mission Study books and the reading program books. As she says, “I can’t do so much physically anymore, so reading is one of my favorite things to do.”
The Shiloh unit does not forget about local needs in their community; and always looks out for their neigh-bors in need! The also participate in Operation Christmas Child each year and involve their whole congrega-tion in this effort!
At the age of almost 93, Viola shows no signs of slowing down! Her enthusiasm for UMW work has not waned! She is a great mentor for all the younger women in her congregation. She is always open to new ideas. She is not quite as physically able as she used to be, but has several younger women in her UMW group who are ready, willing and able to assist her physically, so that her wonderful leadership and enthusi-asm can continue to guide the Shiloh United Methodist Women as they do the work of Christ.
