A Message from our MHA

On behalf of the residents of The Straits and White Bay North, I am delighted to welcome everyone to the 28th Annual st. Anthony Winterfest.

Winterfest provides us with a time to come together as a community, to enjoy the winter season and all it has to offer. Undoubtedly, there are many who would look with envy at the quality of life we enjoy here in St. Anthony and surrounding communities on the Great Northern Peninsula. I urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to gather with family and friends and enjoy the activities that the Winterfest has to offer.

As you put aside your everyday routine to partake in the week's events, please take a moment to give special thanks to those who have volunteered their time and talents to make this festival a success year after year.

St. Anthony

On behalf of the Town of St. Anthony I would like to extend our appreciation to the many Winterfest Committee volunteers who have donated countless hours to ensure this year's festival has something for everyone.

Winter can be long and harsh and 2008 has brought us an old fashioned winter with lots of snow and extended cold snaps. To break those winter blues, I encourage each and everyone to become active and participate in the many activities planned for this years Winterfest.

Winterfest is a tradition that brings us together to celebrate our winter season and provides residents with an opportunity to meet old friends and make new acquaintances. Let's get out and participate in Winterfest 2008!

Sincerely,

Boyd NoelMayor

Maurice simmons Looks Forward to Winterfest

By AARON BESWICK Maurice Simmonds is the

patron of St. Anthony Winterfest 2008.

The local businessman, who has been a big contributor to local athletic organizations over the years, said he is “honoured and pleasantly surprised” to be chosen.

“It will be a lot of fun – greeting and meeting people and representing the spirit of fun and recreational sports.”

This year’s Winterfest runs March 6-16 and will include a sports day on the harbour, church suppers, family feud, kid’s talent show, a gala and scavenger hunts among other events.

Mr. Simmonds began his

involvement in local sport as a child, with a stick in his hand and his skates tracing lines across Goose Cove ice. As life rolled by he became a businessman based in St. Anthony and a major economic contributor to local sports organizations.

But for him, the concentration has always been on youth sports.

“Sport is almost critical to the young – to teach them discipline, how to meet new friends,” said Mr. Simmonds. “They learn to share in losing as well as winning, not to mention the health benefits.”

St. Anthony and Area Winterfest runs from March 6th to the 16th.
