GT STOFFELTRUCKING

Todd Stoffel began logtrucking five years ago when

a bicept injury preventedhim from doing his previouswork. He’s been an owner

operation in his 1979 Kenworth W900A and lives

in Washougal, Washington. Stoffel also

served as an infantryman inthe US Army and was

deployed in Korea.

Washington

Washougal is a town of 14,095 east of Vancouver, Washington in Clark County. It was officiallyincorporated as a town in 1908 and is a small community that is located next to the ColumbiaRiver. The area has scenic view of the Columbia River Gorge and is a “crossroads to discovery,as both Capt. Robert Gray and Lewis and Clark passed through the area.

In 1825, the Hudson’s Bay Fur Company established Fort Vancouver near Vancouver andit became a center for fur trappers and loggers. Now Washougal sits close to the I-5 corridorand has several recreational and public parks. The town has experienced rapid growth go-ing from 4,764 residents in 1990, then 8.595 in 2000 and 14,095 in 2010.

Todd Stoffel is a riggingman by nature, but drivinglog truck was always some-thing he could see himselfdoing.

“It would be raining orsnowing and we’d be down inthe brush,” Todd said. “You’dlook up and see a log truckpull up to the landing and I’dbe like ‘well, maybe some-day.’”

Don’t get him wrong, heenjoyed being on a riggingcrew more than anyone, buta popped bicep in 2009 whilehe was installing sprinklerpipe in buildings meant he

THE KENWORTHTodd Stoffel’s 1979 Kenworth W900A log truckhas a 1949 Page trailer but its been worked onso many times its more of a Frankenstein

had to do something different.“I love pulling rigging,” Stof-

fel said. “It’s one of the bestparts of the woods and it will al-ways be something that I en-joy.”

For the past five years, Stof-fel has been log truck drivingand for the past three years he’sbeen on his own as an owner-op-erator of GT Stoffel TruckingLLC.

Stoffel enjoys doing some-thing a little different. He didn’twant a new truck paymenthanging over his head so he’srestored a 1979 KenworthW900A. Living in Washougal,but having grown up in Oregon,Stoffel now hauls in the Kelso-Longview area and pretty muchall over the western Washing-ton and Oregon area. Whereverthe logs are.

GROWING UPStoffel grew up in the woods,

as his grandpa Jerry Sorensenowned one logging side and was

one of the first thinners in the1970s for Publisher’s Paper inthe Tillamook area. Being thetypical go-getter, Stoffel didthings for his grandpa andlearned the ropes of how a log-ging operation works.

Sorensen retired from log-ging in 1985, while Stoffel grad-uated from Willamette HighSchool in 1987. He joined theUnited States Army to serve hiscountry and became an in-fantryman. For 14 months, hewas deployed in South Korea.After he was finished with hisservice in 1990, he thought theoverseas trips were over, but in1991 Iraq invaded Kuwait andthe United States launched Op-eration Desert Storm.

Stoffel was called back upand assigned to the MississippiNational Guard and had a re-fresher course at Fort Benning,Georgia before moving to Ft.Hood in Texas for deploymentto Kuwait. But since the UnitedStates military and coalitionforces defeated SaddamHussien’s army rather quickly,

war ended before we could getthere,” he said.

So with his military careercomplete, Stoffel went back intothe woods.

INTO THE RIGGINGIn 1992, Stoffel went back

stateside in Oregon and marriedhis wife Tammy. At this time,Todd said he realized it was timeto get serious with work in thewoods.

He got a job with Internation-al Paper in Veneta, Oregon andbegan working on the road crewfor the company. He then movedto the rigging crew for one oftheir logging sides and workedthere for three years before mov-ing to work for Weyerhauser inSpringfield, Oregon in 1995.

After that Todd found workfor independent loggers aroundEugene such as JMC Loggingand Farming, Jerry Moffit andhis son Carey Moffit in JunctionCity, Oregon, R and R King inFlorence, Little Log Logging inCreswell and Denny and Vi Mor-rell along with the son Mitch.

After a downturn in the econ-omy in 2000, Stoffel began

pulling rigging for DL Penegor. Then Todd began work for

Omlid and Swinney Fire Sprin-kler in Eugene and became aunion fire sprinkler fitter in2006. While this meant he trav-eled a lot, he enjoyed the hardhonest work that reminded himof working out in the woods.

“Steve and OJ expected a lotout of their workers but theytook care of us,” Todd said. “Itwas a good job.”

In 2009 after moving from Eu-gene to Washougal, a popped bi-cept meant that Stoffel couldn’tfit pipe anymore and he had tolook for something else to do. Hisattention turned to drivingtruck.

“It was time to make a deci-sion, I couldn’t go back to what Iwas doing,” Stoffel said.

IN THE DRIVERS SEATAfter months of recovery,

Todd went to IITR to get hisCDL and knew he wanted tohaul logs.

“I missed the woods,” Stoffelsaid.

His first job hauling logs wasfor Mills Trucking and then forChilton Logging in Woodland.After about a year and a half,Stoffel knew he wanted to be-

George Weibold out ofVancouver hired him todrive a log truck and al-lowed him to save upwhile teaching him howto keep a truck out on theroad.

“After George taughtme a lot about mainte-nance and George showedme what to look for ingetting a truck,” Stoffelsaid.

Stoffel’s buddies DJand Dennis Fraser knewof a truck that becameavailable in Riddle, Ore.The truck was previouslyowned by Danny Kinney,who has since passedaway in 2016.

The truck was a 1979Kenworth W900A, soTodd picked it up and hebegan his journey as abusiness owner.

For the past threeyears, Stoffel has beenupgrading everything onthe truck. The trailer isregistered as a Page fromthe 1940s, but Todd ad-mits it's been rebuilt sev-eral times and is a collec-tion of different brandsand makes in each part ofthe trailer.

“There isn’t a bolt onthe truck that I haven’ttouched,” he said.

They quickly switchedthe 13-speed transmis-sion to an 18-speed. Theyreplaced the frame railsand put in a new suspen-sion. Stoffel also took outthe Cummins Big Cam II

and put in a3406E.

“It made moresense to fix andupdate than to goout and have apayment hangingover my head,” hesaid.

Washougal isjust east of Port-land, Vancouverand the I-5 corri-dor meaning hecan get around toWeyerhausermills, WKO inCarson, Hamptonmill in Randle,Wash. and millsin Eugene.

“It just de-pends on wherethe wood is goingand sometimes I evenhaul to eastern Oregon,”he said.

Currently, he’s haulingfor Hadaller Logging andmaking relatively shorttrips to Longview andKelso.

DJ got Stoffel his firststready haul via DennisFraser and since then hehas hauled for TimBrown, Wayne Stone andMike Pihl. As is the life ofan owner-operator, Stoffeldoes work where it'sneeded and then makescalls around to stay busy.

One aspect of log truckdriving he enjoys is beinghome every night with hisfamily. Fitting sprinkler

pipes did not allow forthat. He was on the roada lot, living out of a suit-case and hotel room. Nowhe’s able to spend moretime with his family inWashougal.

Tammy and Todd havetwo boys - 23-year oldTyler and 14-year oldCarson. Tyler is an Eaglescout while Carson is aStar scout. Stoffel helpsout his kids quite a bit intheir scouting.

“Having my own truckaffords me to have oppor-tunities to do more scout-

ing,” Todd said. “Taking aday off is not going to killme, I can do summercamps and just do morewith my family.”

When it comes tomaintenance, somethingthat can eat up the timeof any log truck driver,Stoffel tries to knock outany repairs can do him-self but for bigger thingshe takes it to MarkOrmiston, Marks Truck-ing and Repair in EthelWash., Sawyers TruckRepair in Molalla, A-1Truck Repair in Wood-

land and NorthFork Diesel.

pulling rigging, to in-stalling sprinkler pipe in-to buildings to now a logtruck, Stoffel has donemany different things inhis life. One thing in com-mon has been his strongwork ethic and a don’t-quit attitude.

“I’m blessed to be ableto ride and support mywife and kids,” Stoffelsaid.

While he’s in thedriver's seat now, Stoffelis right where he wants tobe - out in the woods.
