Hello Fellow HOG’s!
The 2015 Officers have met and
planned out a GREAT year for
Birmingham HOG. It is still a
little cold for riding so here are
some of the upcoming events.
February 6th-8th World of
Wheels. February 14th Sweet-
heart Dinner. March 21st New
Member Ride then later that night Game Night...Texas Hold Em, Cornhole,
Board Games. Also, starting in March Rider’s Bike Night once a month through
October with other events. This is just a few events so keep your eye on the
Chapter calendar for upcoming events and rides.
Have you had your bike serviced lately? Now is the time to take it in. You don’t
want to wait around and a nice day comes with a ride posted and say...Ah I can’t
go cause I need tires or service. So take your HOG into Rider’s HD and see Ar-
thur and the gang. They will have you ready to “Ride and Have Fun”!

What a great start to the New Year on a
Harley Davidson riding with good friends
on Phillip’s ride up through Springville and
Margaret. Then to meet back at the HOG
room for a delicious meal of black-eyed
peas and turnip greens prepared by our great
cooks,
We had a good turnout for our first meeting
despite the very cold weather, had some
good pizza for our meal and discussed several rallies and rides. I myself can’t wait for the SOA
ride in May and hope we have a great turnout from our members. We also want to welcome
two new members, Ray and Ron.
Hope to see everyone at our Meet and Eat at Munoz’s, our next monthly meeting on the 12th
and the World of Wheels February 6-8.
Hope to see everyone at all our activities and don’t forget to ask someone to join us in the
BEST HOG CHAPTER!!
Your brother,
David (DJ) Pardue

6th - 8th. This is a big event for us. There is a sign up sheet to work 2 hours at a
time. You can work as much time as you would like to. There will be a designated
door for the volunteers to enter. Once inside the volunteer list will be checked so
make sure that your name listed. The times are Friday 5:00 - 9:00, Saturday 10:00
- 10:00 and Sunday 12:00 - 6:00. Then Rick spoke about the Bama’s Boots,
Bands and Bikes weekend celebration May 15th - 17th. Friday night there will be a

per couple. Autograph & Photo Session with Tommy Flanagan and Mark Boone
Jr. Saturday Fun Family Festival with local bands, kids zone and autograph ses-
sion with Tommy and Mark at the Pelham Event Center for $15.00 per person. Sunday Charity Bike Ride with Tommy Flanagan and Mark Boone Jr .
Treasurer David Lee reported that everything is fine. We have money going out and money coming in.
Secretary Julie Gamble thanked everyone for coming out on this very cold night.
Jeff Alexander asked if we could have more Country bands and less Hard Rock.
Activities Lisa Townsend spoke about the Chili Cook-Off January 24th at the Hog Room. Starts at 11:00 and judging will be at 12:00. Check the website for events.
After the Cook-Off there will be a Corn-hole Tournament. This event is open to anyone. $10.00 person.
Rick stated that he would like for our Chapter to do more things with the Heart of Dixie Chapter so he invited them to the Chili Cook-Off.
Ladies of Harley Sally Peek talked about the Sweet Heart Dinner February 14 th. $15.00 per person/$30.00 per couple. The steaks will be grilled at Riders. We will
have a DJ and Karaoke. She will be inviting Heart of Dixie to join in on some of our events. Rick said that he would like to have another Newlywed game. If you
know someone that has been a member before and is not now invite them to come and check us out.
Editor Everett Vann said that if you would like to have some flyers about the Bike Raffle let him know. Newsletter articles are due by the 15th of each month. If you
have an article that you would like to add to the newsletter send them to Everett by way of [email protected]. Newsletter are electronic and can be viewed
on the Chapter website. If you would like a paper copy let Everett know.
Rick wants to know what can we do as a Chapter to make it better? Jeff Alexander suggested more Country Music. More get togethers/after hours parties. Lisa
Townsend asked who would like to do a Texas Hold’em game? Other suggestions were Bingo, Movie Night, Dinner Rides, Sunday Afternoon Rides, Mystery Din-
ner, Social Events and Pot Luck Dinners.
Safety Officer Tony Berenotto asked if you have something you want to do please let an officer know. At the meetings Tony wil l ask a member to share a safety
experience. This month Kevin Back wants everyone to remember to keep your eyes on the road at all times. When riding you can get use to the bike after awhile and
maybe not always keep an eye on the road. Be aware all the time of everything around you. Tony suggested to use a camera or camcorder attached to the handlebars
or helmet.
Rick advised that the next meet and eat will be at Munzos in Trussville on January 29 th. He also asked about a new event and if the Chapter would like to have one.
We would have a raffle of a Visa Shopping Gift card to be given away the weekend before Black Friday. The prizes are 1 st place - $1,500 2nd place - $1,000 and 3rd

ceived their road captain patches. If at the last minute you would like to do a ride per Rick let him or Rex know and they will add the information to the Chapter

A month has already gone by and it’s time for our Annual Sweetheart Dinner. My how time
literally flies. The event is scheduled for Saturday February 14th starting at 6:00 PM. The cost
is $15.00 per person and includes a menu of steaks cooked to order on the grill, baked potato,
salad and dessert.
This year for entertainment we are doing something a little different. Having a DJ with Kara-
oke with 2 Wolves DJ Service from Fort Payne. Hope to have new members there too so we
can get to know one another and have fun doing it. Who knows? Can’t wait to hear friends
singing voices!!! Remember to send me any favorite songs you want to dance to or ones you
want to sing. I will gladly put them on the list for the party. Bring your “sweetie” with you for
a delicious steak meal and enjoy the night with your HOG family.
Ladies, start pulling out your “stuff” for a yard sale. When the weather permits, I want to have
a LOH Yard Sale to discard any items you want to get rid of. All details will be discussed in
the next HOG meeting February 12th. Also, we all have pets that we truly love. Another activ-
ity I want us all to participate in is a “Pet Fashion Show”. I don’t want it to be a competition
just a fun day to spend with our “best friend” in their cutest outfit to prance around and show
them off. Any ideas to make this better, please contact me. All input is appreciated. This year
is going to be the best year ever and want all to be a part of it. You can reach me at
[email protected] for any suggestions that you would like to do.
I have never been so excited to start riding again. I’m sure it’s
because of my new 2014 Heritage Softail, but the “riding fever”
has been the worst so far. The calendar will be filling up with
regular rides, so be on the lookout! Can’t wait to ride with eve-
ryone and make new memories for 2015!!

Happy February everyone!
Our first “event” of the year is in the rear
view mirror now and what a great way to
start the year!! We raised over $300 for Chil-
dren’s Hospital, had good fellowship, ate
some great chili and had our first cornhole
tournament. Cathy Estes won the chili con-
test, with Sally Peek coming in second and
Travis Land coming in third. Tony Waitz-
man and Brian Houk won the cornhole tour-
nament with Tony Berenotto and Mike (sorry no last name) coming in second. Thanks to
the Activities Committee (Angie Waitzman, Janice Isbell and Sandy Phillips) for helping
everything run so smoothly. Also thanks to Tony Waitzman for taking care of the cornhole
tournament. There were several others that pitched in and helped as well but I’m sure I’d
leave someone out if I tried to start naming names so please just know that I appreciate all
you did!!
**Everyone at the last meeting said they loved it when we had potluck dinners so we’re go-
ing to have a soup potluck at this month’s meeting. That should warm the soul and fill the
bellies. Let me know what kind of soup you’re bringing or if you’d rather bring the extras
(dessert, crackers, cheese, cornbread, etc.), you can do that instead. Once I have an idea of
what everyone is bringing, I’ll know what to tell everyone is needed. (I can tell you we
don’t need chili). We don’t want to have 6 boxes of crackers and only 1 pot of vegetable
soup! Email me at [email protected] and let me know what you will be bring-
ing. Mmmm, this should be good!
** LOH Sweetheart dinner is Saturday, February 14th. Be sure and check out Sally’s article
for all the details on that.
**We had some really great suggestions for other activities at the meeting such as, movie
night, mystery dinner theater, game night/Texas Holdem, casino night, a luau and a country
western night, just to name a few. On March 21 we’re planning on having game night/Texas
Holdem, so save the date for that.
See you at the meeting!

Greetings fellow HOGs!! Has another month passed
already? I hope everyone has had a great, and a safe,
month. Those who were at January's meeting saw a
new activity that I hope to try every month. I asked
an audience member to share an incident or event
that put them in a precarious situation on their mo-
torcycle; a situation that could have endangered their
lives or that of others. I'd like to thank Kevin Back
for not getting angry when I ambushed him and
asked him to share his story.
What we learned from Kevin's story was that experi-
enced riders can sometimes become complacent. It's easy to become confident in ours skills, so confi-
dent that we feel we can multitask while on our very powerful and possibly very dangerous Harleys.
The takeaway goes all the way back to the basics that we all learned as beginners; keep your eyes on
the road and your hands on the handlebars!
I'd also like to share material from other sources throughout the year. During our trip to Thunder Beach
in the Fall we all enjoyed the freedom of riding in Florida without the legal requirement for a helmet. I
know I enjoyed it, but it is not something that I would do on a regular basis. I know others disagree
with that sentiment and I fully respect those beliefs. Sometimes to get around those legal restrictions
folks will wear novelty helmets, as to not draw attention from law enforcement. Personally, I feel if
you are already wearing a helmet it should at least protect you. So, I share with you an excerpt from an
NHTSA article posted to the US Army's Safety Center as food for thought!
Summary of Novelty Helmet Performance Testing
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tested seven popular “novelty” helmets to deter-
mine how they compare to properly certified helmets. The novelty helmets all performed significantly worse,
based on their lack of ability to absorb impact energy during a motorcycle crash. Novelty helmets, in general, had
very little, if any, impact-absorbing capability. Computer simulations of head impact attenuation tests show a
100-percent probability of brain injuries and/or skull fracture for the person involved in a crash while wearing a
novelty helmet.
The novelty helmets tested performed significantly worse than any helmet that complies with FMVSS No. 218. In
general, non-compliant novelty helmets will not protect motorcycle riders during motorcycle crashes from either
impact or penetration threats, and will not likely be retained on motorcycle riders’ heads during crashes.
Novelty helmets present motorcycle riders with a higher risk for skull fracture and brain injury when compared to
certified helmets. A motorcycle rider who wears a novelty helmet during a motorcycle crash in which the rider
falls to the ground and the rider’s head contacts a rigid body such as a paved road will likely sustain fatal head
injuries. Motorcycle riders who wear novelty helmets and believe that “something is better than nothing” have a
false sense of security regarding the protection afforded them by helmets not designed or manufactured to comply
with FMVSS No. 218.
The remainder of the article, with all of the study data, is available at: www.nhtsa.gov/cars/problems/
comply/Index.cfm. To search for motorcycle helmet compliance test results, search by
“Equipment” (rather than “Vehicle”) and “FMVSS No. 218”
Next month I'll be covering some of the motorcycle safety training available in the local area!

Let’s MEET & EAT
In past years we met monthly at one of our advertisers for the
monthly “Peel & Stick”, preparing the newsletters for mailing.
It would be a lot of fun meeting with each other on a weeknight
to have dinner and refreshments, catch up on news, and visit
with each other. Now the newsletter is processed, stamped and
mailed out without us doing it.
We are leaving out the newsletter and just picking a place each
month to meet up and catch up. The times and places will also
be posted on the ride calendar.

Chapter Membership
To remain in the local chapter, your national H.O.G. membership has to be active. National H.O.G sends out reminder e-mails
and invoices in advance of your expiration date. Please understand that it is your responsibility to renew your national H.O.G.
membership when it is due. If you don’t renew your national membership, it is our obligation to remove you from our mailing
lists as a local H.O.G. member, and you will no longer receive e-mails or a newsletter. PLEASE keep your national membership
current!
