ST. PATRICK’S

DAY TRIVIA:

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was

held in Boston in 1737. The

potato famine of 1845-49 brought

thousands of Irish immigrants

to the US. So, they used St.

Patrick’s Day to express their

ethnic heritage pride with pa-

rades, banquets, pageants and

dancing.

SPRING FACT:

MARCH 16ST. URHO’S

DAYMany many years

ago in Finland there used to

be wild grapes growing all over.

One season a bunch of grass-

hoppers (locusts) with a voracious

appetite for grapes hop into

Finland. Enter the great Finnish

Hero, St. Urho! Waving his pitch-fork and chant-

ing “Heinasirkka, heinasirkka,

menetaalta hi-iten” (“Grasshop-per grasshopper skoot!”) he drove the grasshoppers out of the vine-

yards. He did this on March 16.

BIG BIRD’S BIRTHDAY

The famous bird has been a

central character on Sesame Street for the program’s

run, premier-ing in the first

episode in 1969. The big yellow bird can roller

skate, ice skate, dance, sing, write poetry, draw, and even ride a uni-cycle — pretty talented for a character de-

scribed in the TV show’s writer’s guide as a 6-

year-old. Big Bird has a teddy bear

named Radar.

KID

’S KORNER

BABY FOOD JAR GARDENThese pretty little flower gardens are perfect to celebrate springtime. Make one for your teacher, too!

Age: 4 and up (This project is rated EASY to do.)

What You Need: Baby food jar with lid • Small silk flowers • Rolling pin • White craft glue or hot glue gun • Green play dough or green modeling clay (you can use our homemade play dough: 1 cup flour • 2 tsp cream of tartar • 1/4 cup salt • 1 cup warm water • 1 tsp oil • Green food coloring. Directions: Mix together all ingredients, add-ing the food coloring last. Stir over medium heat until blended smooth. Place in a plastic bag or airtight container when cooled).

What You Do: 1. If using the homemade play dough, follow recipe instructions. 2. Roll out the play dough or clay with rolling pin. 3. Using the mouth of the jar as a cookie cutter, cut out a circle. (If you use the lid as the cookie cutter, you will not be able to close your jar when the time comes.). 4. Glue the play dough or clay into the lid. 5. Stick flowers into the dough or clay. If using play dough, set lids aside to dry and harden over night. 6. Screw the lid onto the jar, carefully inserting the flowers into the jar. 7. Decorate the lid however you like. (We used a scrap of felt then tied a piece of ribbon on.)

Helpful Hints: 1. Modeling clay can be used instead of our home-made play dough. It’s inexpensive, and can be found at most craft stores in a variety of colors. 2. Check the clearance racks for silk flow-ers, and look for flower arrangements at the dollar store as well. 3. Instead of buying silk flowers, you can use toothpicks for stems and foam flower cutouts if you prefer. Source: www.parenting.com.

CRABBY CONTEST Where was this photograph taken? The

first correct response [email protected]

will receive a Gift Certificate from:

TRADITIONAL IRISH COFFEE (Serving for 1)

5 ounces of hot, boiling water • Strong, fresh, hot coffee (made from fresh ground beans with a drip filter) • 1 Teaspoon Brown Sugar • 1.5 ounces of Irish Whiskey (The brand doesn’t matter because all Irish whiskies are made by Irish distilleries, which is partly owned by Seagrams, a US Company.) • Softly whipped cream with a thick

enough consistency to float.

Directions: Get an 8 ounce clear glass mug and put a spoon in it. Carefully fill this only half-way with the boiling water. Remove the spoon and pour out the water. Quickly! Pour in the fresh, hot coffee! Then put in the brown sugar. (Note: White sugar can be

used but it doesn’t enhance the whiskey as good as brown sugar does.). Now...pour in the whiskey! And, then you pour on the cream! It has to be thick enough to float, but soft enough to let the coffee quaff through it so it cools, but also enriches the drink.

KAFFEEKLATSCH WITH THE AUTHORS NExT DOOR Noun: kaffeeklatsch - an informal social gathering at which coffee is served. Origin: German, from Kaffee ‘coffee’ + Klatsch ‘gossip.’ THEY MADE ME LAUGH - I love to make others laugh and I love to write. So it’s natural that after 25 years as a teacher and 60 as a parent and grandparent, I’d write a memoir. Remembering stuff to include was easy, deciding what to leave out was hard. As my mem-oir metamorphosed into a novel, changing names, other than family, dates, and places was imperative. My dream is that after I’m dust, my grandchildren and their grandchildren might find a copy of my book –and laugh. BJ McCall PsyCHIC IN SEATTLE - Writing has always been about story. When I was young, I loved listening to stories told by my dad, the self-ap-pointed storyteller in our family. From him, my humor springs forth and I infuse it into my writing whenever possible. Most of my novels are character-driven, but the story comes first. There must be a rea-son for writing. My stories speak from my heart, which drives the characters to come forth and take over. Then the characters come alive. They speak from their inner beings and let the readers know what makes them tick. Mimzi Schradi TALES OF TWO SISTERS - I spent years exploring the Last Frontier, Alaska, as a professional pilot. Now, a retired NW Airlines interna-tional pilot, I fly my own plane for pleasure. My love of flying and the great outdoors permeates my novels as well as my poetry. My writ-ing illustrates the importance of faith, hope and love. I live in the Pa-cific Northwest with my husband Bud. When not writing I spend time tending our small vineyard, landscaping our property, hiking with our children and two granddaughters, singing with multiple chorale groups and volunteering as a spiritual director. ANNOUNCING MY CANDIDACY FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES I am Tim Jones – a professional humor writer. For months now I’ve been watching all of the presidential debates, and I’ve heard some pretty incredible promises by the serious candidates running for president. I have to say: They are really good at making outra-geous promises and telling lies. And then it hit me: So am I! I do this in every issue of the Crab Cracker. Which is why I feel there is room for one more candidate in this year’s presidential election: ME! Naturally, this raises a number of questions, such as: What are my credentials to be considered for such an important responsibil-ity? • What are my views on immigration reform? • Where do I stand on gun control? • How did I get your email address? All perfectly reasonable questions – all of which I plan to deflect by answering a completely different question from the ones posed above, further establishing my credentials as a legitimate presidential candidate. For example: Question: How would you solve the problem of funding Social Security so that it does not run out in my lifetime? Answer: The stability of our Social Security system is of paramount importance. America’s greatness is built on the backs of its citizens, who have worked hard and paid into Social Security for years. And it is these people who have made this nation the great nation it is today. That’s why we need to protect our rivers, lakes and air from pollu-tion – for our children and our grandchildren. After all, if our kids can’t swim in a lake without the fear of being attacked by terrorists, then how will we ever stop China from hacking into our electrical grid? I for one won’t stand for it. And that’s why I’m running to be your next president. God bless America.

Question: What are you credentials to be our next president? An-swer: I can see that the moderator has only given me 30 seconds to respond to this question, so let me be direct. Did I mention God bless America yet? I did? Okay, well then, let me address this very im-portant question about my qualifications to lead the highest office in this country. The second amendment is something we must not take for granted. And there is no greater nation in the world than the United States. It is for this reason that – Oh, I see my time is up. Next question, please. So, I am hereby officially launching my campaign to become your next president. And I pledge to you, my fellow Americans, that MY promises are way bigger than any other candidates’. MY PROMISE TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE: If you elect me to be-come your next Imperial Overlord, er, I mean President, I promise by the end of my first term to eliminate poverty, solve the Middle East conflict, and put a man on Mars. I further pledge to increase our military spending by 50% – unless you’re one of those people adamantly opposed to increasing our military spending, in which case, I also promise to slash military spending by 50%. I will overhaul our healthcare system so that everybody is going to love it – but I can’t tell you how I plan to do it just yet, because that would spoil the surprise. I will jumpstart the economy by slashing taxes by 150% and raising the minimum wage to $150 / hour – with eight weeks’ paid vacation for everyone (which will be paid for by renting out billboard advertising all along the 100-foot wall I will erect on the US-Mexican border. I will also eradicate bullying in every middle school in America, with the possible exception of New Jersey. Those kids are incorrigible. I can’t promise you that I’ll be able to solve all of America’s ills in the first year of my three terms in office. But let’s just say, I think YOU would make an EXCELLENT Secretary of State in my Cabinet. In the end, you have a clear choice. You can vote for one of the other lame candidates who only promise to make America “great again”. Or you can vote for me and make America Super Duper Fantabulous again – oh, and win your very own brand new 2016 Ford Mustang – with racing stripes – made right here in the USA. The choice is yours, America.

TIPS FOR TONYOn March 12th I will be working at The Paddle Pub from 9-5 and will be donating all of my tips to the Fecht’s. As most of you know Tony was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer this last December and will be starting Chemo the beginning of March making it so he will no longer be able to work. I have been friends with Dani for over 20 years and known Tony for almost 15. They are one of the most kind hearted, loving, extraordinary families I know. I hope to see every-one on the 12th to help me support this amazing family! Please feel free to share and add people to this event! DAHLIA TUBERSPhil Rifner with Seacoast Gardens will have his dahlia tubers for sale at Orchards Nursery in Stanwood starting March 1 and throughout the Spring. He will be available on Saturdays for tips on planting and growing dahlias. He will also be at the Port Susan Garden Show with Orchards Nursery March 19th.

FEBRUARY WAS A BAD MONTH FOR POPULARMUSICWe lost, among others, David Bowie and Lemmy from the metal band Motorhead. But I didn’t see much coverage of another loss – Dan Hicks, of Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. Dan’s music was a masterful mix of country swing, Django Reinhardt gypsy jazz and California cynicism. He’s probably best known for songs like “I Scare Myself” and “How Can I Miss You When You Won’t Go Away”. I checked the Sno-Isle Library catalog, and we didn’t own any of his music – but then I re-membered we had an account with Hoopla, the digital music stream-ing service, and sure enough, they had lots of Dan Hicks available (I recommend “The Blue Thumb Years 1971-1973”). So then I thought I’d put Hoopla to the test. I recently saw a documentary about the early ‘60s British folk revival, and wondered if Hoopla had any treasures for me. Yes, indeed. Seminal guitar albums from Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, among many others. (Start with “The Best of Bert Jansch”, John Renbourn’s “Sir John A Lot” and the duet album “Bert and John”). It’s impossible for Sno-Isle to offer physical copies of everything, but Hoopla offers the next best thing. Get out your library card and try it out! – David Menard, Branch Manager, Camano Island Library.

STANWOOD/CAMANO ISLAND ROTARY INTERACT INDUCTION EVENTMarch 2 was a night of celebration at Stanwood High School when the Interact Club of Stanwood High School held its induction ceremony. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Stanwood-Camano Island, Interact is a service organization for students of high school age. Having simi-lar goals and aspirations as Rotary, they want to doservice projects and make their school a better place. Rotary District Governor Bill Robson, Assistant District Governor Marc Baker, and District Interact Chair Patty Klassen all attended the ceremony to help welcome the students into the Rotary family. Stanwood High School Student Advi-sor George Colby and Rotary member Amy Moe have been working with a core group of the students for months to make this happen. Stanwood High School Interact is only the second Interact Club in District 5050 south of the Canadian border. Several other schools are looking into Interact, and now that Stanwood has formed their club, other schools can use Stanwood High School Interact as a model. The Rotary Club of Stanwood-Camano Island is excited about having the opportunity to work with these local student leaders where the two groups will be able to work with each other on projects, share ideas, and the Rotary Club will be able to take advantage of the energy that the students will provide.

THEIDES OF MARCH

MARCH 15

The soothsayer’s warning to

Julius Caesar, “Beware the Ides

of March,” has forever imbued that date with

a sense of fore-boding. But in

Roman times the expression “Ides

of March” did not necessarily evoke a dark mood—it was simply the

standard way of saying “March 15.”

BRING YOUR TRASH TO SHORELitter, such as plastic bags, fishing line, Styrofoam, and other debris can injure, trap, or kill animals & birds. Plastics are particularly de-structive in the marine environment where animals like birds fish & marine mammals commonly mistake them for food. Instead of biodegrading, plastic products are broken down by sunlight into smaller & smaller pieces. These microplastics remain in the environ-ment, absorbing pollutants in the water & entering the food chain. The Marine Pollution Act (MARPOL) is an international treaty that regulates pollution from ships. Annex V of MARPOL prohibits the dumping of plastics from any vessel anywhere in the ocean, or in our navigable waters, and restricts dumping of other refuse from vessels. All boats over 40’ in length are required to have a written Waste Management Plan onboard. Store all trash and waste onboard your vessel and dispose of it in garbage or recycling receptacles when you return to shore. Not only will it help protect water qual-ity and marine life, but it can protect your boat as well, since garbage in the water can also foul propellers and block the cooling water in-take on your engine. –Erica Bates, WSU Island County Shore Steward.

SEASHELL ART PROJECTDon’t know what to do with all of your seashells that you’ve collected? Turn it into a fun art project.

Materials: Wood plack from any craft store; Picture hangar; Sea-shells, beads, collection; Weldbond glue. It’s non toxic & easy to use. Dries clear. Most hardware stores have it. You’ll love this glue for a variety of projects; 1 sheet of glass. Hobby Lobby -hammer

Buy a precut wood plack. First attach a picture hangar to the back. Mix 1part water to 2 parts Weldbond glue. Apply a thin coat to the entire wood surface for prep. Paper towel works for application. Let dry overnight is best. Find a seahorse stencil from a coloring book or Google one. Trace it into the wood. Glue on the seashells, beads etc. ART TIP-think about balance & size. You can stop there & lightly brush on paint to the surrounding wood area OR Part B. Glue on broken pieces of stained glass. This will then require you to grout it. Smash the stained glass in a wrapped up towel. That’s the easiest. Wear eye protection to be safe. Glue on the glass directly with Weldbond glue. Let dry over night. Then grout. Follow grout instructions. Fun project with the grandkids, or make a collection of seashell seashore seashores.

Part B - Grout. 1 quart is plenty for this. Non-sanded is preferred. Any color. Pre-made ready to use works.

NO VACANCY

They all come every change they get to escape the city strife. They all come up to soak up the serenity of island life.

They come through the door with suit cases in their hand,Not caring what they do here cause just being here is grand.

We truly love sharing our little house above the beach.Where you can watch the boats and whales go by and see and hear the eagles screech.

Walking the beach of rocks and sand,Arriving home with that special shell in hand.

Digging clams and catching shrimp and crab,They all exclaim that’s the most fun they’ve ever had.

Cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner,No one ever goes home any thinner.

All the laughter and the funis winding down now that summer is done.

With all the washing of guest sheets, towels and dishes,We wave good bye with all our well wishes.

Now that septic system has been pushed to the max,We can finally sit back and relax.

But of course this really isn’t trueBecause when you call to come and visit we always welcome you.

But till that time the “No Vacancy” sign is hung above our door.So we can sit and watch the autumn football games and bet upon the final score.

ST.PATRICK’S

DAY TRIVIA:

The most popular food,

besides beer, to be consumed on St. Patrick’s Day is corned beef and cabbage. Other traditional Irish foods eaten in

the US are mul-ligatawny soup, Irish stew and

Irish soda bread. In Ireland, the

preferred dish is colcannon (made

from mashed potatoes with shredded kale, minced onions

and melted butter.)

The Stanwood Area Historical

Society asks, “Did You Know?”

Excerpts taken from the

“Stanwood Story”, written

for theStanwood News

by Alice Essex.

A red letter day, indeed, for Stanwood and its school children was January 17, 1914. The dream of a new high school officially came true. The sleek, new, brick building stood on North Street, west of the “old grade school,” and loomed in sharp contract, architecturally, to the 1891 model. It was a two-story building with spacious halls and a 38 x 66 foot auditorium, complete with stage. A physics lab, two classrooms and teachers’ room were also on the second floor. Domes-tic Science, sewing rooms and the manual training department were on the first floor, along with another classroom. Tennis courts and a bigger and better athletic field were to the west and north. Creden-tials, a few coins, cards and a copy of the Stanwood Tidings had gone into the cornerstone with it was laid in in August, 1913 with consid-erable fanfare, including talks by county school officials. January 17, 1914 was the date of dedication, when at last Stanwood High School students were given classrooms of their own, instead of sharing the already cramped grade school, where two grades were still taught in one room. Ceremonies opened at 11 o’clock before an enthusiastic audience of school officials from Everett and nearby areas. Music by Stanwood schools launched the event and among the visiting dig-nitaries was Mrs. Lizzie Jones, County Superintendent of Schools, who was hearty in her praise of the building constructed at a cost of $24,000, including furnishings and equipment. She even pronounced Stanwood’s new high school a better value in building and equip-ment than had bee achieved by most districts in the county. The affair continued into the afternoon, following a luncheon served in the new domestic science department to more than 180 guests. The faculty and high school students did the honors. Speeches and a session for teachers concluded the dedication, which marked another milestone of local progress. A red letter day indeed for Stanwood and school children for years to come. The building was in use until 1938 when it was declared unsafe and torn down to make room for the Stanwood Elementary School. Come September 1914, high school enrollment had gone from 61 to 74 students… an all time high. In anticipation of the enlarged facilities and expanded curriculum, the first Parent Teachers’ Association had been organized in fall 1913, and a constitu-tion had been adopted for the high school Athletic Association. The athletic group, under the direction of Coach Harry Crow, chose an orange “S” as the school emblem and planned for high school pins. Colors were orange and black and letters were presented to eligible players, namely-Frank and Walter Durgan, George and Clifford My-ron, Wilhite, Lester, Libby, Olsen, Savage, Carlson, Knudson, Cleary, and Howard. The next fall, the local football team won loud cheers by winning the Snohomish County Championship.

MORGAN’S

TALES

Tales from Morgan’s Used Book Store, The Stanwood CamanoCommunity Resource Center and Davis Place.

GROWING FORWARD GARDENSNow that the gardening craze has REALLY hit – with good weather some days and just enough rain on other days and lots of garden and flower shows in the area – remember the Growing Forward Community Garden program at the Stanwood Camano Communi-ty Resource Center. You can learn how to grow your own groceries. Call 629-5257 to sign up now. The cost is $20 for a growing season of April – October although there are scholarships available. Grow-ers provide their own seed that is NOT genetically modified, and fertilizers and pesticides that are free of chemicals. Other guide-lines will be given you when you sign up. Growers are also asked to donate time to the entire garden. In addition to weeding your own plot, you can help free the garden paths of weeds or in general help beautify the garden. There is a picnic table for resting and a memo-rial swing for fun. While you are at the gardens, look around at the grounds of the Resource Center and Davis Place. You will see what sustainable vegetation looks like. There are fruit trees, strawberries for ground cover, and even some artichokes. Ask questions. The staff is there to help. Remember that Morgan’s Tales Used Book-store has books on gardening, growing flowers, vegetables, and herbs, and landscaping. Set a goal for yourself this summer to grow – for beauty and for nutrition!

purim

THE JEWISH HOLIDAY OF PURIMbegins on the fourteenth day of the Month of Adar in the Hebrew Calendar. This year that date corresponds to the evening of March 23rd & lasts to sundown the next day. The holiday comes from the Book of Esther, one of the 2 books in the Bible that do not mention God. The story takes place in Persia where Ahasuerus was king & Haman was prime minister. Esther was the king’s new queen & the king did not know she was Jewish. Haman wanted to annihilate the Jewish people for the usual anti-Semitic reasons: hatred of foreign-ers, their way of life & customs are different from ours, they do not obey the king’s law, they don’t worship our Gods, they are refugees, their skin is a different color than ours. Purim recalls the danger of minority status where the refugee & the stranger are hated just be-cause they are different. Esther risks her life by telling the king that she is Jewish & that Haman is set to destroy her people. With the help of her uncle Mordechai, Esther saves the Jews. The king writes an order that Haman & his family will receive the punishment he planned for the Jews. Purim is a fun & raucous holiday. The scroll of Esther is read & everyone cheers for Mordechai & boos Haman. People dress up in costumes, the more outrageous the better & act out the Purim story. According to tradition, the adults get so drunk that they can’t tell the difference between Mordechai & Haman. I don’t recall anyone getting quite this drunk & a good thing too. Al-though the holiday is fun, there is a twist at the end. Jews should not cheer when anyone is killed, even though it is an enemy. The toast most used by Jews is L’chaim: to life. When Pharaoh & his army were drowned in the sea, the people cheered. God’s response was, “My people are being killed; why are you cheering?” If we want to live, we have to let others live also. – Submitted by Murry Spector.

MEANT TO BE I went to a duck-themed gift exchange party. Partygoers took turns by either picking a gift in a brown bag or a gift that someone had already unwrapped. One man chose a bag and unwrapped a duck-fart scented candle. A woman stole it, so he sadly had to choose another bag. When he pulled out the lovely ceramic duck stein, he murmured, “I guess it was meant to be.” Really? Who meant it? God? Did SHe move heaven and earth and a few constellations so this fellow could lose the duck-fart scented candle and gain the duck stein? Is God such a micro-manager to pre-ordain what gift someone would receive in a random exchange? And what possessed the gal who stole the duck fart candle? Did the devil make her do it? Perhaps the devil and God work together in mysterious ways. If God dictates everything from star-crossed lovers to random gifts, where’s free will? God made me do it! Pass out the “Get Out of Jail Free” cards. People pour cosmic meaning into earthly coincidence. We’ve all experienced amazing coincidences. In fact as I’ve been writing this, I checked my email and found a message from Science of People with a survey asking whether I believed in fate. I was amused by the con-nection to what I was writing, but I didn’t shout, “This is a message from the Universe!” We live in a vastly interconnected world. It’s not unusual for related things to show up at the same time and seem like a cosmic coincidence. But when things don’t match, we don’t say, “That was NOT meant to be!” We just don’t notice. So when five ducks line up and we win the jackpot, odds are God didn’t make it happen. If I’m wrong, I guess this article was meant to be and I couldn’t help but write it. Go to peggywendel.com, tell me your amazing coincidence and I’ll tell you mine.

DUBLIN CODDLEA hearty Irish dish with sausage, bacon or ham, potato and onion. Serve with a bottle of Guinness, and Irish soda bread, for sopping up the gravy!

INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. thick-sliced bacon, cut in 2-inch pieces • 1 1/2 lbs. pork sausage links • 4 lg. (about 2 lbs.) potatoes, peeled and sliced • 2 lg. onions, quartered and sliced • 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley, divided • Salt and pepper, to taste • 2 c. chicken stock

DIRECTIONS: 1. In large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat, then drain on paper towels. Brown sausages in the remaining ba-con fat; drain on paper towels and slice into 1-inch pieces. 2. Peel and slice potatoes about 1/4-inch thick. Peel, quarter, and slice onions. Chop parsley. 3. In a 5-quart Dutch oven OR casserole dish with lid, layer 1/3 of the potatoes, 1/3 of the onions. Season with a little salt and pepper, then layer 1/3 of the sausage and bacon over the onions. Sprinkle with a little fresh chopped parsley. Repeat layers two more times. 4. In a medium saucepan, bring the chicken stock to a boil. Pour over the potato casserole. Sprinkle with more chopped parsley if desired. 5. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 50-60 minutes, until potatoes are just tender. Remove the cover and cook an additional 20 to 30 minutes, until the top is browned and potatoes are tender. 6. Cook’s Note: If you prefer a creamier sauce, just add a little cream to the broth. Sliced carrots also make a nice addition to this dish. Chopped ham can be substituted for the ba-con, if you wish.

HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY!To me, St. Patrick’s Day means get out the corned beef, cabbage and the crockpot. This is something you either like or not. I am a lover of it and I also enjoy corned beef after it cools to slice evenly for homemade Rueben sandwiches with lots of cheese, horseradish, and some sauerkraut. How about you? Do you like it or not?

This edition we continue our vocabulary building with Journey with Jan. I have a new word to broaden our horizons and to keep our brain and memory sharper each day. This is a form of exercise, very essential for our social and mental health; like our muscles, our brain needs regular stretching too. The new word for this edition is “GAINSTAY” (pronounced gain-SAY). It is a verb and is defined by a “challenge” or a “dispute”. When used in a real estate sentence, I can say, “The seller is a reputable contractor and we knew he was likely to gainstay the findings in the home inspection report.”

Your Camano Island Expert continues to update you with the local real estate market. We are still seeing a record low inventory of va-cant land and homes. If you are stitting on the fence and you do not know what to do, now is the time to jump off and give me a call. I am open 24/7 by email, phone or text at 360-507-4133. [email protected]

Until next time, I hope you are enjoying our beautiful spring. Have fun - and thank you for your continued support with Journey with Jan.

BRAVE NEW FOOD

I was reading how the government had finally approved --- after a mere 20 years --- an Atlantic salmon with a gene scientists had glued in them that made the fish grow twice as fast as the ones God herself made. Maybe the government regulators need a gen splice for faster decision making, but that’s another subject for another day. Being an old fisherman, I might like catching salmon that get twice as big as the puny ones I used to catch, but the truth is, these are farm fish, raised in pens, fed antibiotics and nutrients, and I’ll never be trolling for em with my flasher and squid lure.

Now some folks might not mind big cheap fillets of coho, even farm raised, but the regulators say the fish farmers don’t have to tell us they’re not natural salmon. They don’t want to scare the buying public with visions of Frankenfish. Better they don’t know those are experimental fish, no point ruining appetites and profits both.

The geneticists, you better believe, are already working on the next improvised foods now that they got this gene splicing gimmick down. And General Mills and Archer/Daniels/Midlin, they got the bankroll. If they can sell the public on Cap’n Crunch and transfats, some mutant porkchops can’t be far off their coroporate radar.

Personally I figure most food most people eat now is about half chemistry experiment, why not make the other half genetics? Won’t be too long the food scientists will make flavorful packaging and you won’t even have to unwrap your Hungry Man or Lean Cuisine, just radiate in the microwave, get yourself a fork and enjoy. No fuss, no muss. Salt it down with some anti-aging supplements, pop a diet coke and turn on the TV. Is this a great country or what?

TWO GOLD STARS

Millie Pigort received a Purple Heart in early 1945, posthumously earned by her son Andrew Riker, known as Bud, who died in a French field on December 10, 1944. The news was hard on Bud’s twin sister Mollie who remembered Bud as her best friend. Bud Riker was a private with the 17th Armored Infantry Battalion, part of the 12th Armored Division, which breached German defens-es at the Maginot Line near Rohrbach, France where he fell. He graduated from Lincoln High School in East Stanwood in 1942. He rests today in France’s Lorraine American Cemetery.

The family would soon learn the fate of another Riker brother and Lincoln grad, Dorman. He had been taken prisoner after Japanese forces seized Manila on May 6, 1942. He joined the Navy in 1938 and attended the Naval Academy a year later. A Pharmacist’s Mate 2nd Class, he was then sent to Quantico, Virginia and trained as an X-ray technician and there became engaged to Mary Landrum of Philadelphia. After his capture Dorman remained as part of the medical staff at the Canacao Naval Hospital in Manila, part of the Bilibid Prison compound. Personnel treated the endless number of prisoners suffering from everything from amoebic dysentery and tuberculosis to beatings and gunshot wounds inflicted while part of Japanese labor gangs.

As U.S. naval planes began bombarding the Manila area in Sep-tember 1944, the Japanese began a draft of prisoners to be sent to Japan. Dorman was put on the “Hellship” Arisan Maru—one of a fleet of aging freighters used for transport. Over 1,700 men went aboard on October 10, 1944. They were crammed in the front holds of the ship with barely enough room to move or lay down. Most had to squat or stand during the next two weeks at sea, existing in near total blackness, stagnant heat and the fetid stench of human filth. Many were ill, some died--some went mad. Many prayed to die. On October 24th, the U. S. submarine Shark attacked the convoy in the South China Sea which included the Arisan Maru, not realizing that it carried Allied prisoners. Three torpedoes were loosed but only one hit the freighter amidships on its starboard side. Rope ladders to the prisoners were cut by the Japanese who abandoned the ship. Some prisoners did es-cape and lowered ropes to the others. Those strong enough went into the chilly waters as the ship began to sink, swimming toward Japanese destroyers and lifeboats only to be beaten back by their captors.

Nine men would survive to tell the horrific story of the Arisan Maru. It is America’s worst naval disaster in terms of lives lost. Re-searcher and writer William Bowen’s father died that day on the Arisan Maru. He found the inscription on Corregidor’s memorial a proper benediction: “Sleep, my sons, your duty done, for Free-dom’s light has come; sleep in the silent depths of the sea, or in your bed of hallowed sod, until you hear at dawn the low, clear reveille of God.”

FOR THE LOVE OF FALANGHINAThanks to my former role as military spouse, I spent 3 years living in Naples, Italy. I loved living there – the food, the culture, the wine….oh the wine! While indulging in the Italian experience, I developed an infatuation for Italian wine. Like many European countries, eat-ing and drinking local is daily life in Italy; thus, I spent many days drinking local wine. Unfortunately, that also encompassed brief encounters with “landlord wine” (loosely translated, wet gym sock), but thankfully I also had the privilege of drinking exceptional lo-cal wine from the ancient, indigenous grapes of the region. One of the wines I grew especially fond of was Falanghina, a light, re-freshing white wine with delicate aromas of green apple, citrus, pineapple, white flowers and a hint minerality. It’s true what they say, if you want a great pairing, pair wine and food from the same region. I’d say that’s how I first fell in love with Falanghina, but I have since learned that this wine just seems to go well with most any food. I’ve had great success pairing Falanghina with anything from Super Bowl junk food to salted dark chocolate. Because it’s a relatively obscure grape from the Campania region, I thought my chances of drinking Falanghina after departing Italy were slim. I was thrilled to find it in following duty stations in California and Hawaii! Since moving to Washington, Falanghina has been difficult to find. I’ve stumbled on it only once or twice….until now. Thanks to the spectacular wine steward at QFC Stanwood, Leisa, this wine is now available in the “Europe” section of the store for around $15 a bottle! Now we can all have a little “La Dolce Vita” right here in the middle of our Washington winter!

ST. PATRICK’S DAY IDEA:

“Just in case any of you have small ones, when my Joey was little, we bought a little dime store leprechaun. We tied a little string to it, and then filled a little pot of “gold” with Fer-rero Rocher candy. We put the little Leprechaun in the bushes, and the pot of “gold” too.

When he got off the bus, I called him over to the bushes, and told him I saw a Lepre-chaun, and to look for him and his pot of gold. He peered in the bushes and found him,

just then my friend pulled the string, and the leprechaun jumped from branch to branch, my son tried to catch him, I yelled for him to forget the leprechaun and grab the pot of gold. He did, the Leprechaun got away but Joey got the pot of gold. Every year now he finds a pot of gold on St. Patrick’s Day, and he’s almost 19. But he still swears he saw a

Leprechaun :)” – author unknown.
