PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Greetings,

Just when I stopped writing 2012 on my checks someone told me it's now 2014.

Al though we always try to encourage young people and their interest in Aviation, we are not always able to take advantage of a golden opportunity. Several months ago, Greg Tice rented a truck, drove to Minnesota and purchased a Sonex project from a local school that was discontinuing their aviation program. The project came with all the textbooks and material left over from other projects. He wanted to have the plane completed in our hangar with the help of local school kids. That plan never came together but now it is going to the Bridgman High School shop class to be completed by students there. Thanks to the generosity by Greg and the interest of Detlev Ansinn and the Bridgman shop teacher, the project will now go forward.

A few days ago I was talking with Ross Warner at the Benton Harbor Airport. He asked if I knew of a young person that he would be glad to mentor for training as an airline pilot. I told him I was really a lot younger than I looked. I think he was impressed because he said I was probably only a few years too old, which when translated, means only a half century or about 7 dog years. Since I just barely missed out I decided to let all of you know about his generous offer. If you have someone in mind let us know. This could be a once in a life time opportunity. Ross flies for Delta out of Detroit. He said there will be a shortage of pilots in the near future. The training would be demanding and expensive but with scholarships available and coaching, advice and encouragement by someone like Ross should make it a lot more attainable.

As we close out another very good year at Chapter 585 I would like to extend my personal thank you to every one in the chapter for all the time and effort it takes to make up the successful and friendly group we have. A great team is made up of great individuals and that is certainly the case at Watervliet. I now want to wish each and every member and your families a very happy 2014.
