Dear Friends,

Early in this New Year it might be so that we are still living with a clear focus on the Mystery that matters, namely, the Saving Presence of Jesus among us. The annual celebration of Jesus’ Birth and all of the surrounding events, characters and meaning, should renew our days by returning us to the point of every-thing. The Magi we welcome today remind us that the Birth of the world’s Savior was once some-thing new to discover (and that it remains so for us).

Just before Christmas, at our parish school, St. Anth- ony of Padua, we welcomed Jesus among us in a special way. The students entered the school gym-nasium (which we know as Margaret Hofbauer Hall) to find a puzzle scattered all over the floor. In fact, it was a puzzle they themselves had helped to make, by coloring the various pieces of it in their classrooms that same week. The scattered pieces remind us that the world was in chaos and disarray until the Savior came to make things right again. When Little Jesus came, He brought, in His Person, the Way for us to follow. Right away He was calling people to find Him and to learn humility. The shepherds came at the voice of the angels. And the mysterious star summoned the Magi.

During our puzzle assembly assembly it was fun to watch the students find and follow the star by placing it in its rightful place above the stable in Bethlehem. It remained there as we adored Him in the Sacred Host. Jesus remains truly present among us to this day. I invite you to watch for His guidance within your mind and conscience. Follow His call to find His Presence in your life. Otherwise, where will you go? “They were overjoyed at seeing the star…”

Estimados amigos,

A principios del próximo Año Nuevo, podríamos seguir viviendo enfocándonos más claramente sobre el Misterio que es más importante, específicamente, la Presencia Salvadora de Jesús entre nosotros. La celebración anual del nacimiento de Jesús y de los eventos de esta celebra-ción, los personajes y el significado, deberían renovar nuestros días al regresarnos al tema principal. Los Reyes Magos, a quienes les damos la bienvenida, nos recuerdan que el nacimiento del Salvador del mundo fue en algún momento algo nuevo para descubrir (y que de igual manera lo es para nosotros).

Justo antes de Navidad, en nuestra escuela parroquial San Antonio de Padua, recibimos a Jesús entre nosotros de una manera especial. Los estudiantes ingresaron al gimnasio (llamado Margaret Hofbauer Hall) para encon-trar un rompecabezas esparcido por todo el piso. De hecho, era un rompecabezas que ellos mismos habían ayudado a hacer en sus aulas esta semana, al colorear las diferentes piezas. Las fracciones dispersas nos recuerdan que el mundo estaba en caos y confuso hasta que el Salvador vino a arreglarlo. Cuando el Niño Jesús vino, trajo, con su persona, el camino que debemos de seguir. Inmediatamente, invitó a la gente a buscarlo y a aprender humildad. Los pastores llegaron al oír la voz de los ángeles. Y la misteriosa estrella guió a los Reyes Magos.

El momento de armar el rompecabezas fue divertido, al ver a los estudiantes encontrar y seguir a la estrella y colocarla en el lugar que le corresponde sobre el esta-blo en Belén. Allí permaneció como lo adoramos en la Sagrada Hostia. Jesús permanece verdaderamente presente entre nosotros hasta el día de hoy. Los invito a observar Sus enseñanzas dentro de sus mentes y conciencias. Sigan su llamado para encontrar así Su presencia en sus vidas. De lo contrario, ¿a dónde irán? "Estaban llenos de gozo al ver la estrella...”

The feast of manifestation, or Epiphany, is tradi-tionally celebrated the 12th day after Christmas, January 6th.

Prayer (On entering the home):Leader (Priest, if present, or father of the family):Peace be to this house. All: And to all who dwell herein. All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they of-fered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial. All Pray: The Magnificat. During the Magnificat, the room is sprinkled with holy water and incensed. After the prayers of the blessing are recited, each room of the home is sprinkled with Epiphany water and incensed. The initials of the Magi are inscribed upon the doors with the blessed chalk. (The initials,C, M, B, can also be interpreted as the Latin phrase "Christus mansionem benedicat" which means "Christ bless this house".)

Dear St. Anthony Family,

The story of the Epiphany brings so much resolution to the mystery of Our Savior’s arrival; it is hard to grasp how theimportance of the birth of this child might have unfolded at that time in Bethlehem in Judaea. The prophetic nature of a star calling wise men to his manger is a mystery we can derive much meaning from.

We find our team inside St. Anthony of Padua School enter- ing the New Year in great need of such a miraculous outreach. Saint Anthony Parish members can light a star for new famil-ies in the area to see and follow to visit our school. We need to all reach out at the grocery store, and in the neighborhood,and ask young families if they have heard about the new Saint Anthony of Padua Pre-School.

The first Saint Anthony of Padua School open house of the New Year is coming up Wednesday January 30th from 5:30- 8:00 pm. We hope many new families will come and see how we keep Christ present in our student’s lives. Many thanks for the miraculous support you all have given to our parish school.

Parish News 2019 March for Life

St. Anthony's will be providing a bus for parishion-ers who wish to attend the 2019 March for Life. On Friday, January 18, people from all over the country will come together and march on the streets of Washington D.C. in defense of the unborn. To sign up please pass by the church office or sign up with the KoC after each Mass starting January 6. For more information and to sign up, please email us at: bobgahl@gmail.com. End of the Year Updates Actualizaciones de Fin de Año Crisis in the Church: In the past months we have all been disheartened to hear of the scandalous behavior of some church leaders and saddened at the pain and loss of the victims of their sins and crimes. At the parish we have prayed that the reforms needed will be made, for healing and peace for the victims, and for the renewal of the whole Church through these challenges. We are vigilant here at St. Anthony’s to maintain a safe environ-ment, especially for our children. In January we will have meet-ings with our group and ministry leaders to review our child protection and safety policies and to see that they are always observed. For information on the Diocesan response to the sex-ual abuse crisis please see the very helpful and thorough infor-mation on the Diocesan website: www.arlingtondiocese.org .

Youth Ministry: This past summer we hired a new Director of Youth Ministry, Mr. James Armstrong III. It has been some years since we last had an employee serving this vital part of our parish life. Please take a look at the Youth Ministry section of this bulletin and keep an eye out for further activities and plans.

Parish School and Pre-School: We are in our first year with our old name—St. Anthony of Padua School. Please spread the word about our new Pre-School Program now being planned for fall 2019. The Pre-School will serve 3 year olds and 4 year olds.

Heating/Air Conditioning Upgrades and Repairs: Much of the equipment which supplies our heating and air conditioning in the church, offices, and rectory is original equipment, on the job since the church was built in 1970. With extensive consulta-tion and guidance from experts in the field and various Chan-cery offices, we are moving forward with a project to replace the air handler units and to upgrade the overall system to be more energy efficient. This project will be expensive and will require us to work together as a parish family to pay for it.

Food Pantry: Our hope is to provide a new home for our Food Pantry. The plan to build a simple storage building on the edge of the soccer field is under consideration (along with other possibilities) but is being delayed by permit processes of the County. Thanks for your interest and prayers for this important project.

Confessional Improvement: Please notice, while you are here, the improved confessional on the right side of the church (as you enter). The changes make it possible for a person with a walker or in a wheelchair to enter and exit with greater ease. Gradually we hope to renovate the other three confessionals as well.

Supporting the Parish: Many people benefit from the minis-tries, programs and outreach of our parish. The work we are doing requires financial support. Please take seriously your role as a Catholic to support your parish. An effective and efficient way of contributing is our new Faith Direct program (which takes the place of our previous e-giving program). Please see the information on Faith Direct in this bulletin to sign up. You will see that it is user friendly and helpful.

Crisis en la Iglesia: Durante los últimos meses, todos nos hemos sentido desanimados al enterarnos sobre el comportamiento escan-daloso de algunos líderes de la iglesia y nos ha entristecido el dolor y la pérdida de las víctimas, de los pecados y agresiones de estos dirigentes. En la Parroquia hemos orado para que se hagan las reformas necesarias, para la sanación y la paz de las víctimas, y para la renovación de toda la Iglesia a través de estos desafíos. En San Antonio, estamos alertas y preparados para mantener un ambiente seguro, especialmente para nuestros niños. Ministerio de la Juventud: El verano pasado contratamos a un nuevo Director para el Ministerio de la Juventud, el Sr. James Armstrong III. Por favor, dele un vistazo a la sección de este boletín del Ministerio de la Juventud y preste atención a otras actividades y planes.

Escuela parroquial y preescolar: Este es nuestro primer año con nuestro antiguo nombre: Escuela de San Antonio de Padua. Mejoras y reparaciones al sistema de calefacción/aire acondi-cionado: Gran parte del equipo que suministra calefacción y aire acondicionado en la Iglesia, oficinas y Rectoría es original, y el mismo está trabajando desde que se construyó la Iglesia en 1970. Luego de hacer varias consultas, estamos avanzando con un pro-yecto para reemplazar unas partes de las unidades de aire y actuali-zar el sistema en general para que éste sea más eficiente. Otro elemento importante de este proyecto es que nos dará la capacidad de controlar los niveles de temperatura y humedad en los edificios, con lo que actualmente no contamos. Este proyecto es costoso y requerirá que trabajemos juntos como Parroquia para pagarlo.

Renovación del confesionario: Mientras esté por acá, vea la mo-dificación del confesionario al lado derecho de la iglesia (al entrar). Los cambios llevados a cabo hacen posible que una persona con un andador o en silla de ruedas entre y salga con mayor facilidad. La puerta de la izquierda es para el penitente. Al ingresar, uno puede elegir arrodillarse (o pararse) detrás de la pantalla para permanecer en el anonimato o hablar con el sacerdote cara a cara. Poco a poco esperamos renovar también los otros tres confesionarios.

Apoyando a la Parroquia: Muchas personas se benefician de los ministerios, programas y actividades de divulgación de nuestra parroquia. El trabajo que se está llevando a cabo requiere apoyo financiero. Por favor, tome en serio su papel como católico para apoyar a su Iglesia. Una forma efectiva y eficiente de contribuir, es nuestro nuevo programa Faith Direct (que reemplaza al progra-ma anterior de donaciones electrónicas). Por favor, revise la infor-mación sobre Faith Direct en este boletín para inscribirse. Se dará cuenta que esa es una forma más fácil de usar y hacer sus donacio-nes durante todo el año.

Burbidge on Saturday, January 12, at 11:00 am at the Cathedral of Saint Tho-mas More in Arlington as he celebrates the Mass of Ordination to the Permanent Diaconate for five ordi-nandi. This moving liturgy will mark the men with an imprint (“character”) which cannot be removed and which configures them to Christ, who made himself the “deacon” or servant of all. A light reception will follow in Burke Hall.
