Welcome back, everyone! We hope that each and every one of you had a great

2013 Livestock Show & Barnyard Cookery The 2013 EBR Parish Livestock Show & Barnyard Cookery will be held on January

11 & 12. This event brings together two classics to make one new and exciting

venture. This event is open to all 4-H members and we encourage each of you to

not only participate, but come out and support your fellow members.

Here’s a short schedule of what you can expect this weekend: Friday, January 11, 2013

3:00 PM—Barns open to admit animals

6:00 PM—All animals must be in the barns and registered

6:30 PM—General show meeting and supper for all exhibitors and their families

7:30 PM—Ag Olympics competition

Saturday, January 12, 2013

Calling Junior Leaders! Please join the 4-H team to help pack the 2013 Youth Wetlands Kits! The 4-H State Office is hosting a “Packing Party” for the East Baton Rouge Jr. Leaders on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 6:00 pm at the LSU AgCenter Mini Farm behind Parker Coliseum. Food, drinks, and music will be provided; the only thing you need to bring is yourself! These kits are distributed to hundreds of schools throughout the State in order to educate youth about Louisiana’s wetlands. We hope to see you all there for this great service opportunity!

News from Horse Club The next Horse Club meeting will be held on Friday,

January 25 at 6:00 PM in Ethel, LA. Feel free to

load up the trailer and have them tag along as well.

Livestock Club The East Baton Rouge Livestock Club will be showcasing all of their hard work that they have put in throughout the year at the annual EBR Parish Livestock Show on January 11 & 12, 2013. The EBR Parish Livestock Show will take place on the LSU Main Campus in Baton Rouge at Parker Coliseum. All shows begins at 8 AM on Saturday. Interested in joining? Don’t hesitate to join us even if you have little or no showing experience! This club offers much, much more than that. If you’re interested, some possible livestock projects include cattle, chickens, pigs, goats, sheep or rabbits. For questions contact Mr. Shawn at (225) 389-3055 or email him at [email protected].

Shooting Sports Club Practice for all trained participants will be held at the 4-H Property on Saturday, January 26

th.

Please note the times for different disciplines. If you were unable to attend the informational meeting or need more information, please contact Ms. Abby by phone at (225) 389-3055 or by email [email protected]. The District Shoot will take place March 8-10, 2013 in Ascension Parish. We will update all Shooting Sports participants as more information becomes available. If you would like to participate, please contact Mrs. Abby. Also, be on the lookout for emails!

Final Buzz on the Bees 4-H’ers, please don’t forget about this great opportunity! The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. will once again host its annual Honey Bee Essay Contest open to all 4-H youth. This year’s essay will be: “Reducing the Usage of Bee-Killing Pesticides in my Community.”

1. Contest is only open to active 4-H Members. 2. Essay must be 750-1,000 words in length written

on the designated topic with factual statements. 3. A biographical sketch must accompany each

essay. Sketch should include the essayist’s date of birth, age, gender, complete mailing address, and telephone number.

4. Essays will be judged on (1) research– 40% (2) accuracy– 30% (3) creativity– 10% (4) logical development–10%

5. National winners will be announce by May 1, 2013

ALL ESSAYS ARE DUE TO THE EBR 4-H OFFICE BY JAN. 31, 2013. No late entries will be accepted.

National Winners will be awarded:

1st Place -- $750.00, 2nd Place -- $500.00, 3rd Place -- $250.00

The theme for this year’s Junior Leadership Conference is “There’s No Place Like JLC.” It will be held March 8-10, 2013 at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, Louisiana. 4-H’ers 14 and up are invited to register for this special camp created and put on by the 4-H State Executive Board. Our parish is limited to 8 spots so please contact Ms. Abby for more information as soon as possible. *** Registration is due by January 31

Why wait for Summer? Plan NOW! The summertime is always fun, but a summer with 4-H is really one for the record books. Over those two months away from classrooms and schoolbooks, EBR 4-H has several different programs and activities to take part in. Here are some opportunities available to you. Think ahead, and start planning NOW…

Come to the 4-H University Informational Meeting on February 19, 2013 to learn about the plethora of opportunities that wait! For those of you who aren’t familiar with 4-H U, it is a 3 day experience on LSU’s campus for any 4-H’ers between the ages of 13-18. Participants will choose one contest out of over 30 possibilities to train for during the spring and compete in at the event. 4-H’ers also have the opportunity to stay in the dorms with participants from all over Louisiana, tour campus facilities, and get their groove on at the dance each night! If you are interested in attending the meeting please join us on February 19, 2013 at the Burden Center at 6:00 pm. Snacks and drinks will be provided!

Ready for an experience of a lifetime? Be sure to put 4-H Summer Camp on your calendar! East Baton Rouge Parish will be attending 2013 Summer Camp at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, Louisiana June 3-7, 2013. Camp is open to any 9-12 year old 4-H’ers in East Baton Rouge Parish. Camp cost this year is $225.00. This includes camp fees, a parish picture, a camp t-shirt, $20.00 to be spent at the Camp Store, and transportation and food costs. If you would like to register for Camp please contact Ms. Abby at the Parish Office for more information and the proper forms. Remember, it is never too early to register for Camp, as we are limited to 50 spots!

Food & Fitness Camp Here’s another opportunity for you to get involved and take part a state-wide event. Food & Fitness Camp is a great, completely interactive experience that teaches campers the importance of staying active and eating healthier. “Made in the USA” is the theme for this year’s camp! Food and Fitness Camp will take place March 16-17, 2013 at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock, Louisiana and is open to all 4

grader 4-H members. Our parish is limited to a total of 4 spots so please contact Ms. Emily at 225-389-3055 or email her at [email protected] for all the information.

Beef Poster Contest All EBR Beef Poster entries are due to the Parish Office by January 31, 2013. All entries must be on an 11” x 14” piece of white poster board. Place your name, address, age, grade in school and parish on the upper right corner on the back of your poster. Posters should generate positive images of beef and beef products and not portray negative image of other food products (i.e. chicken, pork, etc). Copy written images are prohibited. Please be sure to contact Mr. Shawn for more information.

Senior Scholarships We completely understand that going off to college is exciting, but often expensive. With that, the 4-H Program has a multitude of scholarship opportunities for its members. Senior 4-H members should definitely look into these and take advantage of the scholarships available. This is your opportunity to showcase your involvement and get awarded for it! All high school seniors in East Baton Rouge Parish must complete their 4-H Scholarship forms and turn them into the Parish Office by Friday, March 1, 2013.
