Music Notes

On January 6, the western Church observes the

Feast of Epiphany. This is the day we recall the

Christ Child being visited by Magi from the east

and presented with gifts of gold, frankincense and

myrrh. This event has more significance than is ap-

parent on the surface. Epiphany has also been called

the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, a clue

that God sent the Son to redeem us all, not only the

Jews. One of the pieces of music most closely asso-

ciated with Epiphany is the chorale, “O Morningstar

How Fair and Bright.” While the text itself does

not have much to do with the Manifestation of

Christ to the Gentiles, the Morningstar imagery re-

minds us of the star the Magi followed to find the

child. One of the most highly regarded settings of

this chorale in the organ repertoire is the chorale

fantasia by Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707), a Dan-

ish/German composer and mentor to the great Jo-

hann Sebastian Bach. A youtube link to a video of

the piece follows.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2icuU7-6lk

If you listen carefully, you can hear the zymbelstern

(tinkling bells) at the beginning of the piece. I hope

you enjoy the video.

You are in my prayers. Jonathan

Annual Congregational Meeting: Session has

scheduled the Annual Congregational Meeting for

Sunday, January 28, following worship.

Women’s Bible Study: Ladies, during the month of

January, the Women’s Bible Study is going to be

discussing the book, Same Kind of Different as Me. This

is a true story written by and based on the lives of Ron

Hall and Denver Moore. It is an exceptional book and

one I think you would enjoy reading. Even if you never

attend our Bible studies, I encourage you to get a copy of

this book, read it and join us on Wednesday, January 3,

as we continue our discussions.

LAFFS: LAFFS will meet at Boneyard Grill on

Wednesday, January 3, at 11:30 a.m. Please call Judith

Glass at 812-273-1796 or the church office at 812-265-

2952 to make a reservation.

ACES: ACES will resume potluck suppers at 6:00 p.m.

on Thursday, January 4.

Blood Drive: The blood drive will be on Thursday,

January 11, 2018, and the end-of-the-month meal at the

Salvation Army will be on Saturday, January 27, 2018.

There will be signup sheets for volunteers to work, make

the Sloppy Joes and bake cookies. Cash donations are

welcome, too!

House of Hope Volunteers: The House of Hope is

in need of volunteers. The biggest need is the role of

guided shopper. This is the most rewarding role helping

people select items and making suggestions on how to

use them. Every Tuesday evening and Friday morning,

there is a need for around 25 volunteers. Training is pro-

vided. Each time around 50 people come for assistance.

New people come every month. Hours are Tuesday from

5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Volunteers need to arrive about 15 minutes prior to open-

ing.
