How to Sew Elastic on Ballet Slippers

Single Elastic 1. Slip on your ballet shoes. Before you begin to sew elastics, you must adjust the ballet shoes’ drawstrings

to a comfortable fir. Pull tight for a snug fit. Shoe should slip easily on and off with drawstring tied. 2. Measure and cut your elastic so it is snug against your foot, and make sure you allow enough length (1/4”

on each end) for sewing. Remove the shoes. 3. Fold the heel up flat against the sole so it forms a small triangle on each side-these are the anchor points

where you should aim to connect the elastic. 4. Align the elastic at a slight angle towards the front of the shoe so it will pull evenly across its length and

lie flat against the top of the foot. 5. Prepare for sewing by double threading your needle. Use a whipstitch starting on the top right side of the

elastic and insert the needle through the canvas lining inside the shoe. Bring the needle up through the elastic, about a quarter inch from where you originally inserted the needle. Repeat this stitch until you have sewn around the right side, bottom and left side of the elastic. Do not sew across the top of the elastic.

6. When you have reached the left side of the elastic, knot the thread as described on reverse page. Cut any excess thread.

Crisscross Elastic The crisscross elastic method is more secure than the single elastic method. 1. Repeat step 1 from above. 2. Measure the elastic an inch away from the seam of the heel to crisscross over the foot to the other side

and end at the slipper's midpoint. The elastic should fit snugly across the top of the foot. Using a pencil, mark the spots you’ve measured on the inside of the slipper.

3. Repeat step 2 on the other slipper. 4. Repeat step 4 from above. 5. Remove the slipper and sew the elastic at the marked spots. Make sure to sew the elastic on the inside of

the slipper about an inch below the drawstring. Double check that the elastic is not twisted before you start sewing.

6. Repeat Step 5-6 from above.
