Diagram A 1. Fabrics – Fabric A will refer to the base fabric for a particular block (Blocks 1, 4, 5, 6).

Fabric B refers to the top layer fabric (Blocks 1, 4, 5, 6). Fabric C refers to one fabric in the X block or 4-patch block, (Blocks 2 and 6) Fabric D refers to the second fabric in the X block or 4-patch block.

2. Seams – ALL seams are ½”. Wrong sides together – all seams will be “sticking up.” These are what you will be clipping for the rag effect.

3. Templates – Trace the inner heart template and the outer heart template on the cardstock and cut out each using paper scissors. Draw a 6 inch circle and a 5 inch circle and cut each from the cardstock.

Six basic blocks. Follow Diagram A above for fabric choices.

Block 1 – “Circle´Block - Cut 2 10” squares from the base fabric (fabric A) and place wrong sides together. Cut 2 circles using the 6” circle template (fabric B). You may fussy cut. Right sides up, layer the circles, one on top of the other. Center the circles on the base fabric. Pin in place and sew ½” inside the circle. (I like to mark my sewing line with a Frixion marking pen, using the smaller circle template provided.)

Block 2 – “X” Block – Cut 2 8 ½” squares from Fabric C and 2 8 ½” squares from Fabric D. Cut each square in half on the diagonal. Layer same fabrics, position per diagram and sew 1 and 2 together. Repeat with opposite side. Sew both sides together to form a square. Square up to 10” making sure the center point is centered.

Block 3 – “Solid” Block – This one is easy! Cut and layer 2 10” squares, wrong sides together. Block 4 – “Square on Point” Block – Cut 2 10” squares from Fabric A, layer wrong sides together. Cut 2 6 ½ inch squares from Fabric B. With right sides up, layer the 6 ½ inch squares and center on the 10 inch squares. Pin in place and stitch ½” inside the square. (I like to mark my stitching lines using a Frixion pen)

Block 5 – “Heart” Block – Cut 2 10” squares from Fabric A, layer wrong sides together. Using the larger heart template, cut 2 Hearts, layer right sides up, place and center on base. Pin and sew ½ “ inside the heart, having used the smaller heart template and marking with a marking pen.

Block 6 – “Four Patch´Block – Cut 4 5 ½ inch squares from Fabric C and 4 5 ½ inch squares from Fabric D. Layer the Fabric C squares together, wrong sides together and layer the Fabric D squares together, wrong sides together. Sew together per the diagram at left.

Back of 4 patch block Front of 4 patch block after clipping.

Arrange blocks following Diagram A. Sew the blocks together, “wrong” sides together. The back of the quilt will be smooth, the right side will have all the seams up. Border – Sew ½” all around the quilt. This forms the “border.” Clipping – Clip straight into all the seam allowances, including the outside edge, about every ¼”. Don’t worry about accuracy – close is good enough! Put whole quilt through rinse cycle in washing machine then in a dry cycle in a dryer. Your quilt will come out fluffy! (Be sure to clean out your lint trap – it will be full)
