It was ‘BIG 70th BIRTHDAY’ Celebration at the Dewey Household on Saturday 4th June. Sensei’s actual Birthday was on the 10th but the party took place early due to other SEKU commitments.

It was a wonderful summer evening and approximately forty people comprising family, old friends, including some karate friends gathered at the family home and HQ in Waterlooville.

Yes, it was a joyous event, with plenty to eat and drink and the evening ended with a good old sing song instigated by their old friend, Johnny Elk, who accompanied them all on his guitar.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

SENSEI

The cake was a nice touch. A family friend crafted a large Gi top with a black belt and SEKU badge and apparently it tasted pretty good too.

It appears to be common knowledge these days that Mick Dewey is a whisky enthusiast. He enjoys a variety of brands and blends available from around the world. He particularly favours Japanese whisky and not just because it’s where Karate was born but because they make some of the finest in the world. Needless to say, word has got around and he received numerous presents in this category, which added to the occasion.

The group line up for a photo at the end of an energetic training session.A mixture of senior and junior SEKU black belts

including chief instructors from seven different SEKU clubs

On Thursday 6th October Sensei Dewey lined up the class as usual ready to begin unaware of what was about to unfold. As he called “Yoi” Sensei Brian Smith stepped out of the door at the rear of the class to interrupt Sensei (with the fear of extra press ups for doing so) asking if there was room for additional students for the evenings class. With the reply of “always” and a number of senior Dan grades ranging from 1st Dan to, and including 7th Dan entered the SEKU Hombu Dojo.

The expression on Sensei Dewey’s face was one of shock and surprise to see the number of loyal SEKU students who had travelled for this evenings class.

As usual, the atmosphere and standard was of top quality. For many of the visiting instructors returning to the Portsmouth Karate Club Dojo rewound the clock several decades. For me personally it felt like I had never been away. The spirit, the sweat, the commitment and nervousness was just the same now as my first visit over 42 years ago.

The general opinion from all karateka training that night was to ensure that a repeat performance is warranted. Watch this space sensei you never know when and where.

SAY HELLO TO THE WILSONS Do you remember Paul Wilson? He was the guy who did a sponsored cycle ride from Portsmouth to the B&B in Plymouth in 2015 in order to raise money to send his son Fraser out to Africa to teach children Karate. Well he’s back in the news, doing his bit to help others again.

Paul works as a cab driver, owns his own Hackney Taxi and does a lot of work for the local council. For the past 7 years he has collected and taken a group of five or so children to school. The school is Glenwood School in Emsworth which is about 10 miles outside Portsmouth and is for youngsters with special educational needs, including moderate learning difficulties and/or autism. For children with autism, routine is paramount so Paul has taken this job

very seriously, providing an element of reassuring continuity to their lives.

Paul Wilson and son Fraser provided a Karate Training Session one July afternoon as a part of their end of year activities. The session went better than expected with the kids focusing and working hard on mastering the techniques. This was their first ever lesson and they all did exceptionally well. At the end of the session the group relaxed with Mokso and Paul was surprised that they all remained quiet and relaxed for a full 3 minuets.

Paul commented “They all had a great time and found it very rewarding. It was meant to be a ‘One Off’ but I’m hoping we can do it again , maybe sometime in the future.”

EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY but these four characters could write a book. These are some of the old Karate Pioneers of yesteryear. Portsmouth Shotokan Karate Club from the late 60’s.

Portsmouth KC is now the SEKU Hombu but in the 1960’s little was known about karate apart from it was a strange way of fighting brought over to Britain by Japanese Masters. These four gentlemen were club members in circa 68 - 69 and they recently reunited and had a bit of catching up to do.

Back then, it was down to the young men of the day to dare enter the Dojos of the likes of Sensei Enoeda and Kanazawa to discover the secret fighting techniques of the ancient eastern warriors and samurai. It was all very mysterious and intriguing as little was known in those days but thanks to individuals like this band of four, the knowledge training and methods have been learned and passed down over the years. I guess you could be forgiven for thinking that this is a photo of four OAP’s that couldn’t hurt a fly .... but we know better .... don’t we?

K ATA CLAS SESFOR ALL GR ADES

This year SEKU began the new ‘All grades welcome Kata Classes’ and the session was in Fareham on the 22nd May and there have been regular sessions, about one a month, held at various locations in the Portsmouth area.

Generally they have been early starts and finished midday so there is still time to nip back home to tuck into a Sunday Roast with the family or spend the rest of the day doing your favourite weekend-type-things and I’ll leave you to fill in the gaps.

The great thing is that these occasions are for all SEKU Karateka, no matter the age or grade and are a fantatic introduction to the other SEKU clubs for newbies and a wonderful opportunity to learn from the higher grades for us oldies.

The instructors are some of the most senior and well-respected karateka yet the atmosphere has been relatively relaxed. Students are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the instructors and there have been many humorous moments,

which have contributed to some extremely enjoyable and worthwhile events.

Usually the classes are divided into Black & Brown Belts and Kyu Grades and one Kata is selected for the session. The finer points of the Kata are discussed and practiced along with a variety of Bunkai to help students appreciate the practical sides of the combinations

If you have not as yet attended one of the Kata Classes then I enthusiastically suggest that you make a point of turning up at one soon.

Sensei Stacey Crowe and his son Joey flew to Gibraltar last month for a weekend course with the GibShot Dojo. Sensei Frankie Hatton has been trying to get Crowman out to Gibraltar for almost 8 years since his last visit. Frankie said he needed a suntan and Joey invited himself along playing the ‘Dad’ card.

As always with Gibshot it was a small group which really gives the students a better quality of teaching as the sensei is no further than 5 or 6 metres away during the whole class.

The first day Sensei had decided to teach Hanget-su. A really good but difficult Kata which though in the brown belt syllabus

Above Left to Right: Paul, Brendan, Daryll, Zyan, Joe, Sensie Stacey Crowe, Andrew, Nick and Sensei Frankie Hatton

is really more complicated than that. Using Joey as his stooge the Bunkai was particularly interesting to teach along with re learning how to breathe again, Hanget-su style.

Day two was all Kumite from Kihon Ippon to Jiyu ippon and Jiyu Kumite. The discussion evolved around the randori as well as competition kumite to a more Budo style each with its own merits but also needing its own set of techniques and control. The evenings were spent enjoying the company of friends and a final dinner together at a beachside restaurant in Gibraltar.

Not forgetting his Portsmouth roots they both had a trip out on a boat to see the dolphins with Nick and Frankie.

Frankie said of the trip, “I went to Portsmouth for the first time in 1991 and Sensei Dewey was away teaching. The first SEKU instructor I saw was Stacey Crowe. I came back on the Thursday and they were both there. I’ve been training and visiting Honbu dojo ever since. Gibshot is to me the epitome of Portsmouth dojo. We try hard, we have a close group

of people who train hard together and we enjoy a laugh and a joke.”

Last year Sensei Dewey and Dave Hazard popped in for the weekend. Maybe the Gibraltar Shotokan KC should be on your list for a karate holiday September 2017. [email protected] for details.

This is always a great way to spend a weekend away with the family in a fabulous part of the country. There is a variety in training for karate students and instructors who would like to explore a range of methods of training while the less inclined members of the family can take advantage of the spring weather, Bridport and the local sites. That said, there is plenty of time to let your hair down after training and perhaps socialise with others on the course.

There is also a Black & Brown Belt Course at the venue on the Sunday for members of SEKU and the opportunity to grade.

THE NEWS IN SHORTS Check out the new Blog atsekukarate.wordpress.comcourtesy of Frankie Hatton

We are sad to report that devoted SEKU Instructor of the Arundel & Westergate Karate Club, Evelyn Gibb has recently passed away.

Congratulations are in order for newly graded Back Belts at the B&B on 16th October: Andrew Latus from Crofton Karate Club and Nick Cruz the first to make the grade from Gibshot but not the last we think. Also Junior Black Belts Cameron Smith from Lovedean Karate Club and finally Aiden Letzer from Portsmouth Karate Club.

Do you know where the word ‘punch’ comes from? According to the Oxford English Dictionary it’s from the Latin word ‘Punctus’ which is a perfect passive particle of ‘Pungo’ meaning ‘I prick, puncture, Punch’.... “Oo-er missus!”

However, my Sensei says that a Punch starts from the feet driving you forward towards the target as you rotate your hips and twist your torso, causing a chain reaction of muscles from the calf to the ‘lats’ and driving the fist from the hip, keeping the elbow tight against the waist, relaxed but as fast as the body will allow, as the guided missile of the forearm causes the wrist to rotate at the moment of impact, with focus, exhalation, release of energy and an all mighty yell that would WAKE THE DEAD!!!! ............

............... That’s where ‘Punch’ comes from!

‘ P U N C H ’Where does it come from?

Jason and Helen became Mr & Mrs Hollister on Saturday 8th October at Ashburton, Saltash. "Congratulations to the happy couple."

After many years running the Portsmouth University, Karate Club, Sensei Phil Bryant is standing down as club instructor and handing over to Rob Maynard. "Good Luck Rob!"

It has been almost 30 years away from the professional music scene for Ken Lyons, the instructor of the Uxbridge Machi Dojo but now he is back in the recording studio working on the new 'Hustler' Album. "Rock On Tigger!"
