Perhaps the town’s most famous visitor is Annie Oakley. Oakley, who made a name for herself internationally by being the finest sharpshooter in the land, was part of Buffalo Bill Cody’s wild west show in the late 19th cen- tury. During her retirement, in the early 20th cen- tury, Oakley began to winter in Leesburg to shoot and hunt. She stayed in the Lakeview Hotel, then the shining gem of downtown Lees- burg. Oakley’s beloved dog, Dave, performed along- side Oakley and her husband, Frank Butler. According to Leesburg legend, Dave was struck and killed by a car in the 1920s. A bronze statue of Oakley and her dog is planned for the new downtown Leesburg library. Sixty years later, the death of another per- former would thrust Leesburg into national headlines — this time Ozzy Osbourne’s gui- tarist, Randy Rhoads. While making a pit stop in Leesburg on March 19, 1982, Rhoads took an airplane ride with friend Rachel Youngblood and tour bus driver Andrew Aycock, who was also a pilot. While attempting to buzz over the tour bus, the airplane clipped the bus and flipped, killing all three. Boxer and actor Ed “Gunboat” Smith didn’t just die in Leesburg; he made a home here. Smith was one of the more accomplished heavyweight fighters in the early 1900s, win- ning the White Heavyweight Championship in 1914. He fought Jack Dempsey twice in Oct. of 1917, losing in four rounds both times. After retiring from boxing, he became an actor, appearing in 13 movies between 1924 and 1928, according to the Internet Movie Database. Not everybody who came through Leesburg had good intentions, though. Ma Barker, the famous Depression-era bank robber spent some time in 1930 casing the Leesburg State Bank. According to the city’s Web site, she decided not to rob it because security was too tight.
