Half-Halt The Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Association
And now a few
factoids about
dressage in
America…
- The USDF was founded in 1973 by American and foreign dressage trainers.
- The US Cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas, exchanged ideas and instructors with
the schools of Europe and won an Olympic Team Bronze in Dressage in the 1932
Olympics.
- US General George Patton is credited with protecting the Spanish Riding
School and rescuing Lippizzaner mares from communist block forces in WWII.
- Our Ask the Trainer column this month is answered by a retired US Air
Force LtCol who just happens to be an Olympic judge!
Happy Birthday America!

Pferdechen Tip: To better prepare for show season
read the test movement directive ideas, not just the
movements, when reviewing the test to learn it.
That gives you an idea of what the judge is looking
for (and scoring) in each movement. Also, know
what the collective marks mean. That’ll give you a
winning edge for each dressage test!

SVDA Board Meeting Minutes
February 4, 2013
Members in attendance: Kathy Rowse, Robyn Nunnally, Shari Cutchin, Janice Mumford, Donna Rowland, Mary Winchell, Dan-
ielle Rowland, Tristin Butler, Julie Spencer, Anna Schribel, Robin Jones, Tina Bodnar, Sandy Johnson, Beth Ripple, Reeta Ed-
mundson, and Grace Williams.
I. Call to order
President Kathy Rowse called to order the meeting 7pm, May 20th, 2013 via Teleconference due to
storms in the area.
II. Approval of minutes from last meeting
Minutes from General Membership meeting were motioned to accept by Robin Jones and Sandy se-
conded, all approved.
III. Actions Taken Between Meetings
The SVDA board has unanimously voted to sanction the 3 shows that Bridlewood farm with
Tristin Hardy as Manager will sponsor this year:
The SVDA board has also unanimously voted to keep the SVDA logo within club sponsored
items only.
I have forwarded the check for the Century Club to the Dressage Foundation.
IV. Officer Reports
1. Vice President: Robyn Nunnally
2. Treasurer: Shari reported that the balance to date is $27,861.70. The awards budget and expenses
were reviewed. The Grand Affair expenses for the banquet was under the budgeted amount.
Tristin requested what the proceeds were from the PAF schooling show that would go to the Juniors.
The profits from the show are $697.15. Shari will subtract out the insurance and judges fees from this
and get proceeds to the Junior account.
Robyn motioned and Sandy seconded to accept the Treasurer report, all approved.
Page 20 Half-Halt | Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Associa-
3. VADA Rep: Robyn reported, the last VADA teleconference minutes were emailed out.
SVDA is encouraging all members for vote for the Region 1 delegates. VADA and NCDCTA members
were mentioned.
V. Old Business:
Mary Winchell gathered 590 proof of purchase seals, totals to be $147.50 for the club. Largest
sums from PAF, etc.
VI. Committee Reports
1. Recognize Show: Donna Rowland no new news.
2. Schooling Shows: Robin and Kathy reported:
There has been a request for a sanctioned show on Saturday July 20th by James River Pony
Club. Show is at barn off Joshua Lane. No check has been received, but the board needs the dis-
cuss and make recommendations. Robin feels Saturday should not be a problem. Upon receipt
of $50 sanctioned fee, Robin motioned and Beth seconded to approve the sanctioned schooling
show.
Kathy had concerns over the smaller number of entries this year. Some reasons could be our
March show was canceled, and that is typically our largest show. We have not rescheduled this
show. Tristin reported that 3 of her Juniors have graduated and gone off to college, and others
have had other prior engagements. Also, the two shows that have happened are the two farthest
away and could have deterred some members on the opposite end of the area.
There has been a request to ride WDAA test in our schooling shows since the Arabian club has
opted to use WDAA tests. SVDA has decided to use NAWDA--do they ride HC, or is this too
difficult for the show secretaries to keep track of and do we not offer the class? Because of too
much confusion with yearend awards, handling of the posting of scores and no benefit to club
with added members, volunteers, etc. Anna motions and Robyn seconds to maintain course to
only accept NAWDA tests at the schooling shows.
Are we getting enough volunteers, please recruit and contact Robyn Nunnally?
Robyn would like other suggestions for concessions for the SVDA schooling shows. The Lem-
onade stand was a big hit.
Page 21 Half-Halt | Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Associa-
3. Awards: Carol could not attend, but reported from the treasurer report she understands that the SVDA expenses for the
banquet held 2013 (for 2012 Show Year) are $4041.4 - 2580.00 = $1461.40. And the budget was 2500, so we were under
budget $1038.60.
Mary Winchell reviewed a few things about the new venue and the board discussed the price of tickets: The date for the
2014 Awards Banquet is February 1st. The total cost for the Hilton Garden Inn (Suffolk, VA) for 80-100 people is
$3,714.36 and approximate price is $37 per person. Due to the increase in prices for food, service people, etc across the
board with all venues, it was discussed if a price increase for SVDA members would be needed. It was concluded that a
price increase would be necessary. SVDA has been subsidizing $10 in the past, but this may or may not change since not all
attendees are members and not all members attend. Mary Winchell motioned that we make a decision on the cost of the
tickets at the next meeting, Donna seconded and all accepted.
4. Juniors: Tristin reported:
· We currently have 5 riders, 1 has had to drop off the team due to family conflict. I have 1 more possible rider, trying to see
if it will work out with her requirements.
Savannah Dodge, Hannah Foote, Bailey Troutman, Anna Curran, Beth Curran.
· Still doing the Circus theme. Already have a lion, zebra, bear, ringmasters horse (this rider will have a moustache and tails
and top hat over helmet). Other riders will dress as clowns.
· Tentative stall decorating and planning meeting on May 25th at 4:15 pm at Bridlewood Estates.
· Closing date is received by July 13th but I like to get entries in sooner, target end of June.
· We need to raise approx $2175 for 5 riders to cover entries, stabling, team shirt, team saddle pad, golf cart, hotel for me
and assistant (previously I stayed in a student's room and they paid my share, however they have graduated, we may be able
to stay with someone but will need to split the costs with all). I will be hauling 4 horses so they will cover the fuel expenses.
· We have raised $1177 at the silent auction, I am checking with Shari about the total proceeds from the Princess Ann show.
We currently have a "dips" fundraiser going, and are going to hold at least one car/trailer wash at the Chick-Fil-A in Harbor
View, dates to be decided this coming week. Info to follow.
5. Membership: Reeta sent in latest membership roster, 110 total members, slightly up from last year
6. Clinics and Programs: Janice reported:
Low cost clinic with Kathy Rowse Oct 12 at Silverleaf Farm
General membership meeting & Debbie Rodriguez new rider eq test Oct 27 at Bridlewood Farm in
Suffolk
SVDA reduce cost clinic is confirmed for Nov 16 Silverleaf & Nov 17 Princess Anne Farm with Re-
becca Vick, cost of lesson is $65 for non members and for members is $45.
Beth reminded Janice to send in application for VADA grant.
7. Scholarship/Foundation Fund: Sandy reviewed the one applicant that was received after the due date
was extended for a month: The member was in good standing with SVDA. The board approved with 1
no and 14 yes. Katie Lang was awarded the 2013 SVDA scholarship.
Page 22 Half-Halt | Newsletter of the Southeast Virginia Dressage Associa-
8. Ways and Means: Grace reported she would like to get the SVDA logo for the shirts. Winning
Edge has the SVDA logo. Board discussed having "SVDA" under logo, not spelling it out. $24.80/
shirt. The shirts will not be stock pilled but made per order, and people can choose their own colors.
Grace will get an order form put together and take to the schooling show, and send to Wendy for
website. Checks will be made out to SVDA and Shari will write one check to the shirt printing com-
pany.
9. Newsletter: Anna would like more response in questions/answers for the "Ask the Trainer" col-
umn. Board pleased with what
10. Website: Wendy was not able to attend
VII. New Business
Dressage Foundation Century Club: requested $100 or more donation. The club
Sandy motion and Reeta seconded to make donation of $100 to the club.
Mary Winchell and Tristin said if a makeup SVDA schooling show is needed to be set up, their place
would be welcome to be used. Tristin will be sending sanction show applications to Kathy. Because
efforts were made to make up the March show the following weekend, but was not able to be done,
and since an extra show has been added at the end of the year, and limited volunteering, there will be
no makeup date set for SVDA schooling show, but sanctioned shows are welcome.
VIII. Adjournment
Kathy adjourned the meeting at 8:30pm. Next meeting will be a face to face meeting at Kelly's Tav-
ern Monday, August 5th at 7pm

SVDA Ask a Trainer Column
Dear SVDA Ask a Trainer
I am bringing an older healthy, horse back into work. I believe he's been ridden
in a manner in the past (judging by the videos I've seen of him) that made him
protect his back by tightening it. As you can imagine, his trot is tough to sit. I've
been working with cavaletti and encouraging him to go long and low to help
loosen and supple his back. I've also been yielding him in and out of circles to
help supple his back. Do you have any other ideas for me for him? He's got a
lot of suspension but does tend to brace his back. I've been just working in the
rising trot for now to help him out. Thank you for any help you can provide!
Signed,
Longing for a Looser Back
Dear Longing,
Looks like you are doing everything just fine. As we and horses age. our connec-
tive tissues are not as pliable as they used to be, and joints get a little achy. Proper
vet treatment will help. From a riding standpoint I would suggest that you ride
him comfortably low and well under tempo until you both get comfortable with
each other. When you become a pair, then the dance can get a little more lively.
Good luck!
Axel Steiner, Dressage Trainer and FEI-O, now FEI Five
Star***** Judge, long standing member of the USEF Dres-
sage Committee, a judge instructor/examiner, and faculty
member of the USDF “L” program
Thank you for your service to our country, Mr. Steiner, and to the sport of Dressage!

News from the Youth Team.
The Youth Team is gearing up for the big team competition end of July! We have 6 mem-
bers, 5 of which are competing with musical freestyles. We have several artists who are
busy making posters for the stall decorating contest with our Circus theme. I believe we will
have 2 clowns, 3 acrobats, and a ring master for the costumes in the awards ceremony, com-
plete with decorated horses! Along with the fun, each young lady has been diligently prac-
ticing their team tests and participating in fund raisers to help pay for stabling and en-
tries. Good luck to:
Savannah Dodge
Hannah Foote
Anna Curran
Beth Curran
Bailey Troutman
Ava Neff
I'm already proud of every one of them! Coach Tristin
