THREE FACES (Se rokh)Iran, 2018, 100 mins. (M)

CO-WINNER : BEST SCREENPLAY, Cannes IFF, 2018

This humorous and mysterious drama is Jafar Panahi’s fourth under-the-radar film since being banned from filmmaking in Iran. A beautiful work of art about a few women in feminist solidarity trying to make a difference in quiet defiance of the repressive, small-minded men in their rural village. Surprising, intelligent, insightful and profound. Highly recommended.

2020 RECEPTION

WOMAN AT WAR (Kona fer í stríð)Iceland, 2018, 101 mins. (M)

NOMINEE: CANNES FF - Critics’ Week Grand Prize, 2018

A quirky take on an attack against toxic modernism by a middle-aged woman incensed by the threat to her environment by an aluminium company. A fanciful and unpredictable film, with unexpected twists and turns, but always underpinned by serious social and political commentary and humour. Just excellent!

2240 FINISH

THE WEDDING INVITATION (Wajib)Palestine, 2017, 96 mins. (M)

WON: BEST FILM - HONOURABLE MENTION, London Film Festival, 2017

An astute and delightfully funny road film, winding through the streets of Nazareth. A crochety father and his cosmopolitan son observe a centuries-old tradition and hand-deliver wedding invitations, unlocking past family tensions or revealing differences in their lived Palestinian experience. Great dialogue and terrific performances make for a highly enjoyable experience. A real audience-pleaser.

1035 BREAK

COLD WAR (Zimna wojna)Poland, 2018, 89 mins. (M)

NOMINATED: OSCAR - Best Foreign Film category, 2019

Pawel Pawlikowski’s directing in black and white and a reduced screen size results in outstanding cinematography. It’s a passionate love story between two mismatched musicians set against the background of the Cold War in Poland in the 1950s. It is also overwhelmingly saturated in beautiful music. Highly recommended.

1220 LUNCH

EVERYBODY KNOWS (Todos lo saben)Spain, 2018, 132 mins. (M)

NOMINATED: PALME D’OR, Cannes IFF, 2018

A joyful depiction of Spanish village life by renowned Iranian director, Asghar Farhadi, until a kidnapping occurs and the tension becomes palpable. A clever plot, superbly acted by Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darín, full of suspense, as the layers are peeled back, and the ending is simply brilliant. Another masterpiece by this celebrated director.

1535 BREAK

THE DIVINE ORDER (Die göttliche Ordnung)Switzerland, 2017, 96 mins. (M)

WON: JURY & AUDIENCE AWARDS, Tribeca FF, 2017

A quiet, village housewife decides to get political when she campaigns for women’s right to vote in Switzerland, decades after more militant women in other countries have successfully done so. Nora is an unlikely woman to be leading the cause, but her husband’s view that her pZlace is in the home sets the ball rolling. Much of the film’s power lies in how it shows the importance of allies to fight for positive change and this message is still relevant today. A feel-good experience, hugely enjoyable.

1725 BREAK

FOXTROT Israel, 2017, 113 mins. (MA15+)

WON: GRAND JURY PRIZE, Venice Film Festival, 2017

An unsettling vision of military service pervading everyday Israeli life. A visceral, harrowing drama about death and life, combined with wild, black comedy. A spectacularly effective anti-war film, designed to move you deeply, with an unforgettable, unpredictable ending. Highly recommended.

1935 DINNER

SHOPLIFTERS (Manbiki Kazoku)Japan, 2018, 121 mins. (M)

NOMINATED: OSCAR - Best Foreign Film category, 2019

A touching film about an impoverished and loving Japanese family getting by through shoplifting. Full of twists and turns and compelling, engaging viewing throughout, it gives a rare insight into Japanese culture. The characters of all ages are interesting and complex. Miss it at your peril!

2235 FINISH

THE GUILTY (Den skyldige)Denmark, 2018, 85 mins. (M)

WON: AUDIENCE AWARD, Sundance Film Festival, 2018. NOMINATED: OSCAR, Best Foreign Language Film, 2019.

A riveting crime movie set in an emergency call centre, where a policeman on a late night shift receives a brief call from a panicked woman in serious trouble. The tension is masterfully ratcheted up when the policeman ignores bureaucratic procedures and takes matters into his own hands. Prepare yourself for a suspenseful thriller like no other! Don’t miss it!
