It’s big news for Wrigleyville Dental! Don’t get scared though; we’re not moving very far. Many of you have been coming here for 20, 30 years or more, and have grown quite fond of this place, so you might be asking “why?!” There’s gotta be a really good reason, so I’m gonna give you several. I didn’t want to be the one that relocates this wonderful practice, so at the very least I want to make sure you guys are involved in the process and understand why we have to move. First and foremost, we’re at the end of a 20-year lease that was signed, well… 20 years ago. And as sad as I am to leave the place that has been home to 4 generations of dentists, this 100-year-old building can’t stand strong much longer and the owners want to knock it down and build another restaurant. As the saying goes, when one door closes, a window opens. I didn’t have much say in the matter, so I like to look at this situation as a blessing in disguise. Life constantly brings us hurdles, and it’s up to us to find a way over, under, or around it. This is one hurdle that we have to jump, and I hope to have your support in it. Since we have to move anyway, we’re going to use this opportunity to build an even better Wrigleyville Dental. We’ve been talking to many of you and want to provide you with more perks to make going to the dentist much more convenient and even enjoyable. Reason #2, the new office is going to be brand new, beautiful, and state-of-the-art. We have hired a contractor that specializes in dental practices, and has built some of the most recognizable practices in the Chicagoland area. The space will be more modern than our current location, and we are investing in new toys to improve your experience. We’re going to have new x-ray sensors that are more comfortable for you, will help us diagnose better, and will save us all time and expose us to less radiation. We’re careful not to get rid of any of our present comforts though; we’ll still offer TV, Netflix, Roku, Paraffin wax, music, aromatherapy, tea/coffee bar, and all of the other services to make sure that your time at the dentist is as positive as it can be. The new office is going to be focused around making you comfortable, relaxed, and offering you more privacy, while still providing you with world- class holistic dental care. The other reason for the move is that we’ve been hearing some complaints from all of you over the last few years about the parking situation. We wanted to make coming to Wrigleyville Dental more convenient, no matter the time of day or season. So the new location has a free covered parking garage that we will share with Whole Foods. No more circling for free parking, or worse, having to run out in the middle of your appointment to feed the meter. This new building will be a breeze to park in for both our patients and our staff. Plus, we’re just a little bit farther from Wrigley Field. The few extra blocks means that you don’t need to account for extra traffic whenever there’s a home game. And don’t worry if you come to us by public transport—we didn’t forget about you. The Paulina brown line stop is just a block and a half away. And finally, there’s a Whole Foods right across the street. Now you can get your dental visit and your shopping done in one stop. I think that was actually a really important selling point for me because one of the things I believe in as a holistic dentist is the pharmaceutical properties of food. Your grocery store should be your medicine cabinet, and the quality, organic ingredients I find in Whole Foods make up the perfect prescription for a healthy body and mouth. Between the groceries and the parking, the added convenience we’ll be able to offer in this new office is going to be so wonderful! We’ll be sure to share all the details (and all the excitement) about our move with you as we transform this new location into our home. Where are we moving exactly? After searching long and hard, I’ve found a pretty unique place with lots of perks. It’s the corner of Ashland and School, across from the Whole Foods and next to Xsport where the Caribou Coffee used to be. We expect to be up and running before all the winter snow melts, but we will be sure to give you an exact date when we get closer to it. I’m so happy that this year has brought so much growth and joy to all of us here at Wrigleyville Dental. I’m excited about this next chapter, and about being able to provide you with a better experience coming to the dentist. This move is a major item that I’m checking off my bucket list, and I hope that you were able to achieve some of your big goals this year too. Have a wonderful holiday season. Looking forward to growing with you next year! Wrigleyville Dental Is Moving! Do you ever feel like life is just not going your way? It can seem like everyone around you is smiling bigger, shining brighter, and laughing louder than you are. When you’re feeling down-and-out, it can be hard not to be envious of those around you. But you can be just as happy as your friends and family if you change your mental attitude. It takes practice, but a positive attitude can make you a happier, more successful person. Here are three steps to help you achieve a positive mental attitude and a brighter spark in life. THE MIND IS EVERYTHING; WHAT YOU THINK, YOU BECOME. Stop telling yourself you’re not good enough. No one has the power to sway your mindset but you. If you continually bash your work ethic, your looks, and your life choices, you will begin to think you aren’t worth anything. So, instead of saying, “I can’t” or “I’m not good enough,” try saying, “I can.” Take a page from “The Help”: “You is smart, you is kind, you is important.” Being nice to yourself is the first step towards having a positive mental attitude. I AM IN CHARGE OF HOW I FEEL, AND TODAY I AM CHOOSING HAPPINESS. Happiness is a choice. Regardless of which side of the bed you wake up on, try choosing to be happy. Do so by being grateful for what you have, believing that every moment is perfect, regardless of its outcome, and keeping your sense of humor alive and well. Happiness doesn’t just descend upon us like we expect it will; happiness is something that comes from maintaining a positive mental attitude—no matter what your days bring. BETTER TO BE THE ONE WHO SMILED THAN THE ONE WHO DIDN’T SMILE BACK. Studies have shown that even a “fake” smile can lift your mood. Smile at the sunshine, that funny text, hot coffee, or your cozy bed. Smiling can not only boost your mood, but can attract other positive people and opportunities like magnets. So keep smiling, even if you don’t feel like it, and watch your positive mental attitude soar. Starts With You 773-975-6666 | 1 4 | wrigleyvilledental.com 1353 W. That’s right! It’s big news for Wrigleyville Dental! Don’t get scared though; we’re not moving very far. Many of you have been coming here for 20, 30 years or more, and have grown quite fond of this place, so you might be asking “why?!”

There’s gotta be a really good reason, so I’m gonna give you several.

We’re careful not to get rid of any of our present comforts though; we’ll still offer TV, Netflix, Roku, Paraffin wax, music, aromatherapy, tea/coffee bar, and all of the other services to make

sure that your time at the dentist is as positive as it can be. The new office is going to be focused around making you comfortable, relaxed, and offering you more privacy, while still providing you with world-class holistic dental care.

The other reason for the move is that we’ve been hearing some complaints from all of you over the last few years about the parking situation.

So keep smiling, even if you don’t feel like it, and watch your positive mental attitude soar.

on the Grind

GETTING UP

Whether you’re a night owl or an early bird getting that worm, finding time to work out is important for your long-term health. Research has proven that working out first thing in the morning jump starts your metabolism and boosts your performance during the day. And for all the coffee drinkers out there, rather than pouring a cup-of-joe first thing in the morning, try holding off for a few hours and munching on a quick breakfast instead. Sure, caffeine can be tempting, but the simple act of biting into an apple or peeling an orange can actually help you wake up. Plus, you’ll have the added bonus of whiter teeth!

AT THE OFFICE

Once you’re at the office, you can expect a surge of productivity from about 9 a.m. to noon. It’s during this time that you should crank out all your toughest work for the day, because once noon rolls around, you’re going to be looking for a break, specifically a lunch break. If possible, take an actual lunch break and get away from work for thirty minutes or so. Even if your boss encourages you to work through lunch, use this time to center yourself and prepare for an increasingly productive afternoon.

ON THE WAY HOME

There’s nothing worse than having a rough day at work and then spending 45 minutes stuck in traffic. Although it’s often unavoidable, you can combat that get-me-out-of-here feeling with an evening workout. If you have a gym membership, use it. Otherwise, doing a few at-home exercises and stretches, or hitting your local rec center for some post-work activities, is a great way to burn some calories and blow off some steam from a busy day.

DO YOU SEE WHAT I SEE?One of our major goals for 2014 was bringing an intraoral camera into the office. Well, our hard work paid off and many of you have already seen our state of the art Sopro Digital Camera! But don’t worry if it doesn’t quite look like any camera you’re used to! The Sopro camera is a small wand that we can actually put inside your mouth to give us a picture perfect view of your teeth, gums, fillings, cracks, and anything else that can cause you problems in the future.

So, how will this fantastic new addition change your next visit? Getting a clear image of what’s going on inside your mouth isn’t always easy, or comfortable for that matter! True, we can get a nice look at quite a bit using mirrors at all odd angles, x-rays, and

WHAT TOOTH SENSING TECH CAN TELL YOU

HOW TO STAY HEALTHY

1. Roughly chop tomatoes. Toss tomatoes and unpeeled garlic with just enough olive oil to coat.

2. Roast, uncovered, at 400 degrees for 1 to 1-1/2 hours. The tomatoes should be charred, almost blackened.

3. Push tomatoes and garlic through a ricer, collecting the soup in a bowl.

4. Gently stir in the basil leaves and let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Remove and discard basil leaves. 6. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground pepper 7. Just before serving, drizzle olive oil on top.

pokey thingies, but they won’t catch the little stuff that can become big. Because of the size and configuration of the wand unit, it’s easier than ever to peek behind your smile.

Since we’re taking pictures, we also get a much better record of how your mouth is changing throughout the years. We pride ourselves on our great memories, but sadly we can’t compete with the incredible

THE TECHNOLOGY IN OUR WORLD IS ALWAYS SHRINKING! Incredible power is packed into all of our gadgets and they’re more wearable than ever. From pedometers to posture monitors to cell phones with integrated heart rate detection, the next great technological frontier will be on you, but could scientists take the tech inside your body as well? Researchers at National Taiwan University are already going where no sensor has gone before—into your teeth!

The name of the game is “oral activity recognition,” and Dr. Chu Hao-hua and his team are ready to take on every move your mouth makes. It’s not a very new idea, in fact, several projects have been launched in the past to create sensors that monitor oral action. However, most of these previous models have been auditory detectors worn outside the body, listening in on the unique external sounds your mouth makes when it chews different foods, talks, and coughs. But, each previous incarnation has been plagued with problems, so Dr. Chu didn’t just take his tech internal, he also changed the mechanism entirely.

Instead of a mini-mic, Dr. Chu inserted a miniature accelerometer into a false tooth. The data-collecting molar was then inserted into the mouth and behaved just like a

accuracy of the Sopro! Our camera even has its own LED light source which means we can pick up nearly every detail of every inch of your teeth, gums, and the rest of your mouth.

With a larger image, it’s much easier to see small defects that are otherwise hard to get a visual on. This allows us to treat preventatively, before these early indications become much bigger and more painful problems. And,

DENTAL TECH

speaking of problems, our unit even has a cavity detection (caries cam) mode! Using a blue light, we can actually see cavities before they become visible on an x-ray or to the naked eye. The picture on the right shows a tooth in cavity detection mode. Cavities are noted in bright red on the image. Again, the earlier we catch it the better quality of care you’ll be getting.

The cherry on top is that you too get a chance to see what we see! So you can be informed about what’s going on in your mouth and understand why we do what we do. At your next appointment, ask to see our Sopro. We give free cavity checks with the caries camera feature. Ask about it the next time you’re here. Anyone that spends 40+ hours working in an office every week knows how hard it can be to stay

awake. Whether it’s during those first 15 minutes or so on the clock, or that dreaded afternoon slump, keeping those heavy eyelids open can be quite challenging. Fortunately, there are steps you can take that can not only help you stay productive throughout the day, but also ensure you don’t pass out face down on your desk.

dental implant, with one exception—it was taking notes and monitoring the g-force associated with each oral activity. Right from the outset, the team recorded some fantastic data. Initially, the accuracy of Dr. Chu’s data collection varied widely, reflecting the basic principle that individuals use their mouths in very different ways, even for activities like chewing that you would assume to be relatively uniform. Still, once the system was trained to each wearer’s unique behavior, the accelerometer reported activity with a nearly 93 percent accuracy!

But what does all of this mean for us? Dr. Chu’s ‘smart-tooth’ has some amazing applications in the medical field. While oral health is obviously of great concern, the sensor can be used to help healthcare professionals monitor everything from diet (How often is an Alzheimer’s patient eating?) to respiratory diseases (How often is a COPD sufferer coughing?). Dr. Chu’s current model is now undergoing some remodeling to make the sensor Bluetooth enabled for wireless data collection, and to augment the power source for easier wear and usage. It’s becoming a tiny technological world out there, and hopefully this field of research can help teach us how to live healthier lives.
