CLUB WEBSITE: www.mtwc.co.uk

Editorial

Welcome fellow members to this, the July issue of your favourite Morgan Three-wheeler Club magazine. Yes folks … well

This month’s issue contains, as you may have gathered from the cover, a tribute to the late Roger Edmonds. For many years, Roger was the Club Registrar, in the days when records were collated in a card index. He was also the unofficial Club expert on MAG engines. Written by his sons Guy and Thomas the tribute is on p7. You will also find Steph Wilkinson’s obituary on p19 … Steph was the wife of former Comp. Sec. Kim Allen and regular racing passenger to Dave Hodgson. Sadly, two other well-known Morgan people have died recently; Sue Rew, wife of Robin Rew who invariably accompanied Robin at meetings and SW member Ken Edwards, whom Dick Fripp recalls in his South West Group Report. Our condolences to their respective families. The Curborough Sprint is always well attended, although numbers were reduced this year due to the ACU restriction on one day licences for those aged over 70. Never-the less, great fun was had by all who attended - as much a social event as a sprint and very good to note that a number of cars were shared, boosting the entry and that the number of girls taking part has increased significantly. There is a full report by Pete Clews with the usual excellent photographs by Dennis Rushton, starting on page 11.

Mention of girls leads me to the supposition by a number of sources that The Editor has a predilection for pretty females. As I have always maintained that: “everything said about me is absolutely true”, I make no denial - though must point out that other

club magazines to which I subscribe, go to much greater lengths. The AJS and Matchless Owners Club produce a calendar with scantily attired young models … Don’t they David B. and the cover of the National Autoycle and Cyclemotor Club magazine, “Buzzing” invariably feat-ures promotion pictures of young ladies on mopeds, to titillate members with their tiddlers. Please write in with your suggestions. As usual for this time of year, sporting events fill the summer(??) pages, though a smattering of history and hints and tips are included.

This prompts me to mention the length of Group Reports - the longer the report, the less room for articles and photos. This is a vexed subject as the groups are the vital part of the Club and encourage members to use their threewheelers. Group reports now occupy ten pages - which out of 48 .. well.. you work it out … which along with adverts leaves even less space. Y OU TELL ME!! ... Or whoever takes over from me. This time I really am retiring, so someone must take over in November - otherwise … NO BULLETIN … I’m happy to guide prospective editors .. I knew nothing about editing when I took over!

Editorial scribble ... Anyone can do this...

By the time you read this, you will know whether we are a part of the EU or not. Geopolitical and economic considerations aside, EU regulations have not always been easy for us to accommodate, so we may or may not be able to revert to a sensible driving licence system for our cars. It is not only the EU that has made life more difficult for us. The ACU has withdrawn one day licences for over 70s which has had a significant impact on entries for this year’s Curborough sprint. Provisional estimate from Pete Clews is that we were down by about 20 over 70s who were with us last year. I understand that this is the result of a competitor

members) aged over 70 who had been refused a full racing licence then getting a one-day licence after declaring that they had no medical conditions that would affect them whilst competing. What a shame that the unethical behaviour of one or two has spoiled the enjoyment of the many. (Some might argue that not having me creating my own route around the track would be an advantage, but I am pledged, if ever I get the chance again, to go the right way!) Our thanks to Pete Clews and his team for a

My thanks to the South West group and to Nick Taylor for their hospitality on 4th June. I really do enjoy meeting members that I haven’t encountered before. It makes me realise just what a wonderful bunch of people we are for most of the time . . . Also, thanks to Nick for the loan of a pudding basin helmet for Le Puy, a mere trifle from his Aladdin’s cave of things Morgan and bike, something that only goes to underline the belief that someone out there has what you are looking for, all you have to do is find them.

IF YOU HAVEN’T STUCK WITH ME THIS FAR YOU WILL MISS SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT TO THE CLUB . . . . READ ON! Steve Uprichard really is standing down as Website Manager at this year ’s AGM. Also, Nick Taylor really is standing down as Editor. These ar e key posts in the life of the

Club and if they are not filled, the Website will not be maintained and the Bulletin will not arrive on your doorstep. You may not feel that you can approach the

but in time you might even exceed their high standards. Most of us start serving the Club in demanding roles without feeling that we are ready for or equal to the task, but we grow into it. Sooner or later we find that we are managing reasonably well, the anxiety levels drop and we settle into enjoying the satisfaction of playing an important part in the life of the Club that we value so much. So, stop sitting on your hands and pick up the phone or send an email to me 01246

819021 or [email protected]. Alternatively, have a chat with Steve 01457 762682 or [email protected] or Nick 01454 617002 [email protected] Hoping to see lots of people out and about over the Summer Adrian PS I am always a little hesitant when offering

ideas and advice on Morgans because there

are so many more experienced people out

there. I was however interested in the co-incidence of two people offering ideas about

back-lighting sight feeds in consecutive

Bulletins. At least it highlights a real issue.

Tungsten/LED, take your pick.

We shall be based in the Shaftesbury area, famous for

Golden Hill, setting for the Hovis ads. It is a most

interesting town with of course some steep hills. Zig Zag hill is the most notorious and it will feature in

a scenic run that will take place. Once again the formula is that you book your own

accommodation according to your needs. Campers/Caravans and Motorhomes the best choice is

Blackmore Vale Camping SP7 9PX just outside

Shaftesbury. Plenty of room and a choice of glamping

buildings if you wish. Campsite contact 01747 851 523 or 07436 791800

Mention MTWC. Hotels: The Royal Chase Hotel in Shaftesbury on 01747 853355 or : The Grosvenor Arms, Shaftesbury on 01747 858580 Searching on a site like Booking .com will come up

with lots of other smaller B&Bs etc. However as the

area is popular in the summer do not leave it till the

last minute. They WILL all be full. Please tell us you are coming so you can be included in

the runs/ evening meals and entertainment. Contact Ian

or Maria Parkinson for further info or help with any

It may surprise many of you but despite being the daughter of Eric Eadon, MTWC member and owner of 3 wheeler Morgans for around 60 years, (and Y ND scribe ..Ed), I have never ridden in a Morgan Three Wheeler.

I expected Sat 23rd April to be the usual mundane chaos of taxiing kids, the weekly shop and an evening pint in the local, with the possible addition of a family ‘bun fight’ in honour of dad’s birthday. But….an email from Adrian Murray-Leslie (how do people

or asked – Adrian has a way of phrasing things like that! However, to cut a long story short, I became navigator to Chris Nickless who was coming up from High Wycombe in his Dec. 2012, ‘5 Speeder’ for the ‘Opening Run’ at Crich and somehow had become entered in the ‘Not the Night Trial’ (I suspect AML may have been involved in that too!!)

It appears my expected credentials were: Years of experience of riding around in

open top 3 wheelers – No! Years of trialling experience – Yes, but

the wrong sort! The ability to make witty comments –

anyone would if they transcribed my Dad’s reports!

I did try and explain to Chris that I may not be quite as advertised (AML again!), however he still seemed a willing victim. Happily though when presented with a map (and an egg) I switched off Sat Nav mode and returned to my misspent youth of motor club 12 cars, fairly easily plotted the correct

and had some local knowledge, sorted ... NO! every time I got to an area I knew I stopped looking at the instructions and I applaud Chris for his patience whilst being forced to do a number of 3 point turns!! (Chris, did Dad tell you about me directing him to an event, head in map I shouted straight on, dad stopped, told me to look up

and right in front of me was a garage forecourt! In my defence it was actually a very staggered crossroads!). More applause for Chris (standing ovation next time!), whose ingenious method of protecting the egg by fastening it to the gaiter on the steering rack worked a treat, even over cattle grids!

All three of us made it unscathed to Edale, 5th on the road no less and were very well fed and watered thanks to the hospitality of the excellent organising team.

Did I mention watered? Whilst happily warming ourselves and discussing the beautiful evening sun-soaked views we had experienced, the light dropped and the rain began. Hastily, we gathered our tulips, ‘jumped’ in the cars which had been in the rain just long enough for your bum to get wet, switched the lights on (or lit the candles

A couple of large puddles were avoided – one wasn’t, and it rained harder and harder and then hailed. Funnily enough in that situation local knowledge did come in useful – off went the torch, the map became a travel rug and we arrived in a very timely manner back at Rowsley followed closely by another 11 cars. I had a great time and as a bonus Chris won the ‘5 Speeder’ award (there’s the standing ovation!). So that was my first ride, I now need to graduate to a drive but I need your help!!! It will be my 50th birthday in September and I know of a complete ‘1934 Family Sports’ which has been ‘sleeping’ in a garage for around the same 50 years. As a birthday treat I think that ‘HV 3883’ should be made ready for me to have a driving lesson. Please feel free to apply peer pressure to Eric Eadon in person, by phone on 01709 379037 or in writing at 8, Ridgeway Road, Brinsworth, Rotherham, S60 5HL – AML see if you can sort that one!!!!! …. I hope you’ve got that organised Adrian! … Ed.

Roger was born on 23rd May 1937, the first child to Ernest and Enid Edmonds, of Cowbridge Farm, on the outskirts of Malm-esbury, suppliers of E.E.Edmonds branded milk directly to the townspeople At the young age of seven Roger became a boarder at Taunton boys school where did

, appreciation of which was something he failed to pass on to his two sons. Although enjoying the countryside, his interest was more in agricultural machinery and he commenced apprenticeship at Listers, Dursley in Gloucestershire, where he made some life-long friends as well as receiving a useful training and acquiring engineering skills. for National Service in 1960, the last year of compulsory service but luckily for him it

, so much so, that he signed up for another year. More engineering was involved but this time on aircraft as he was inducted into the RAF at Cardington and Bridgnorth. Roger was part of the maintenance crew that would travel with the aircraft and was attached to the VIP flights. On some mis-sions he would wear the UNO 'blue hat'. His flight log of the time reads like an exotic spy thriller, with stops in Ghana, Aden, Tobruk and Tripoli in Libya. Tanganyika, British Guyana and Jamaica.. Iceland, Ottawa, To-ronto, Colorado Springs and Bermuda also figure on the itineraries: Not bad for a young man who had previously travelled as far as Devon on family holidays and rather better than one of his national service contempo-raries who complained that he'd never man-aged to escape Worthing! After these adventures Roger returned to his apprenticeship and then moved on to a position with Ford in their Dagenham facto-ry, before settling with Automotive Prod-ucts, or AP, in Leamington Spa, where he took on the role of Clutch Development Engineer. On one of his trips home to Malmesbury, he met and later married Jen-nifer Gladwin in 1967.

They lived Northend and son Thomas arrived in 1969, and Guy arrived four years later, both being christened in the church [of Burton Dassett] which was loved by the whole family.

Mechanical engineering was to be Roger's hobby as well as career. Starting with a James motorcycle, while still a teenager, he soon found his ideal transport in a Morgan Three wheeler. As well as providing very

made for an entertaining racing car. Joining the Morgan Three Wheeler |Club, Roger tried his hand at competing in his Morgans, achieving a number of race wins with passengers, Bob Bunn and Nick Taylor. Nick remembers a race with Roger at Silver-stone and overtaking the favourite Mike 'Geezer' Guess within sight of the

Roger owned many different Morgans over the years but one in particular grew old with him. Morgan Family PC2759 was acquired in 1965 for 50 pounds and presciently proved to be the perfect vehicle for taking his soon-to-emerge family on trips and rallies. Jen and Thomas and Guy all enjoyed days out with picnics at car rallies at least until the boys outgrew the tiny rear seats! After Morgans were allowed into the Vin-tage Sports Car Club in the 1980s, Roger became a member and competed not in races but in other events such as driving tests, where he would also pick up the odd trophy. Roger made many more like minded friends in this club and in his later years was an en-thusiastic volunteer in the club library in Chipping Norton In 1981, the decision was made to leave Northend for Gaydon and a larger property with plenty of sheds and a paddock where Jen could keep her horse. Once the place was more ordered, Roger set about completing some of the restoration projects which he had collected over the years and slowly there emerged a steady stream of newly rebuilt Morgans attesting to his mechanical and craft skills and meticulous attention to detail. The cars were always historically correct, be-spoke products exactly to his taste. Certain

jobs were outsourced to fellow club members with specialist skills but the principle was to do as much as possible from his own re-sources. He even went as far as to make the upholstery himself, with an old treadle-powered Singer sewing machine and using real horsehair from Jen's mare, Royal Mead. Living the agricultural life at Meadow House needed agricultural machinery. A vintage (naturally) International B250 tractor was found in Sawbridge, driven home by Roger over a whole afternoon. narrowboats and a couple of family holidays were enjoyed on Dave Winbow’s boat pow-ered by a familiar Lister engine. Roger managed to retire at 60 and he and Jen set about visiting far off places while fit and healthy.

Despite suffering from his own ill health, he was valiant throughout Jen's illness, visit-ing her every day, and proud to play his part at Guy and Marcy's wedding. Battling a draining disease through the winter, he was very much looking forward to meeting his granddaughter, who arrived just a day after he finally lost his struggle. Roger remained a respected member of the Morgan Threewheeler Club for all his life and was known as an authority on the intrica-cies of the "silent, everlasting" MAG engine, helping fellow members with their restora-tions. Roger was a straightforward and practical man, devoted to his wife and family. As Thomas and Guy recall “always being there and having it all quietly under control”. Tributes and condolences received from many friends remember Roger as "a true gentleman".

A Bit of a Ribbing by email I would challenge Tony’s statement that pre 1938 F-types always had a central ridge on the domed section. My 1936 car was pretty original when first acquired and the wings were plain. I also have a photo of a very original 1934 F4 (The Exeter by-Pass Morgan) once owned in the SW by Chris Strachan where the wings are also plain. There are no hard and fast rules for Morgans. With both F-Super and F4s available to me at present I do however agree with the nominal dimensions quoted by Tony. Nev Lear Somerset

Competition Report Pete Clews

What a month! Three Rounds of the MTWC Challenge on three consecutive weekends and all very different. I feel really fortunate that I am able to take part in it with such a fantastic group of people who are always ready to help and support each other. I have always believed that what you get out of anything is determined by what you put into it and this is certainly true of competition. if you don’t make the effort to get your Mog together and ready to go or if you sit and dream of taking part sometime in the future then it is unlikely to happen. At present we are living in a ‘golden age’ and need to make the most of it before it ends, and end it will for many. We are lucky that we have an influx of younger members but we need more and I think the way to achieve this is to look outside the Morgan fraternity and offer to help youngsters who show interest by allowing them to drive our cars in sprints and hill climbs. Oulton Park VSCC 21st May Jan Haynes has become the roving reporter for this meeting and you will find her report elsewhere in this Bulletin. I can only add that speaking later to a group of spectators who had been at the bottom of Clay Hill they expressed their admiration for the close racing in the heavy rain. BHR Darley Moor 22nd May It was an excellent weekend for Hamish Bibby. After his victory at Oulton only Hamish made it to Darley in a Morgan and he won both of the B3 races. Club racer Danny Hodgson who is now works driver for the ‘Speed Penguin’ Buckland finished 3rd and 4th in the same races. La Vie en Bleu Prescott 29th May Early morning mist soon burned off and Sunday was glorious hot day for the third round of the Challenge. After the noise issues last year everyone was being very careful and the thunder of the JAP V Twin was not enough to trouble the sleeping meter! Practice went smoothly apart from Tony Pearson whose gearbox seized tearing off numerous teeth .

In spite of everyone’s efforts a dentist could not be found and he had to retire to ice cream and sunshine. in the racing class by Iain Stewart (58.12). Nigel and Sarah Challis, fresh from their holiday managed a best of 58.44 and Chas Reynolds, who’d won the lottery for having

on to 55.69, enough to get him second best time. Hamish Bibby was invincible with 53.80 while Greg Bibby and Paula Heaney claimed 3rd place with a 56.44 and Alistair Rew fired his 2 Speeder into 4th with 57.67

Myself and Becky Washington managed 62.37 in the F-Type and Chris and John Baylis were pleased with their 65.33. TM cars are scarce this season and Tony

car were flying on 62.30 with David Poplar with a new F2 achieving 66.89. Rob Pike and Petra Rarko had a close battle with Cathy Quinn whose final run of 70.22 was enough to beat their 71.44. The sunshine and the spectacle brought out spectators and numerous club members wandered into the paddock to chat during the day. I hope everyone enjoyed the day. BARC Harewood June 4th Only Iain Stewart made the trek to North Yorkshire but it was well worth it. His fastest time of 76.97 was enough to give him second place in the prewar class with

Forthcoming Events: VSCC Shelsley Walsh 2/3rd July There will be Morgans at this very popular event. It is a power hill and suits the JAP engined cars. Sue Darbyshire Alistair Rew and usually a couple of others take part. Chateau Impney 9/10th July This has become the event to be seen at and Bill Tuer, Greg Bibby, Ewan Cameron, Hannah Enticknap, Rob Pike and of course Sue Darbyshire will be there.

BHR Lydden Hill 16/17th July The B3 races will have Bill Tuer and Greg Bibby as well as Danny Hodgson in the Buckland Ford.

A popular non- competitive event VSCC Cadwell Park 24th July Sue Darbyshire will be there.

The gathering began on Saturday afternoon as the first few arrivals camped in the sunny paddock and drank tea. Sue and George Darbyshire were the first and were soon joined by The Reaneys, Steve Kolowski, Phil and Maggie Bridge and myself and Sue. Soon the paddock began to fill as we waited for the cycle racing to finish so that we could get some of the timing gear into place. Phil Bridge began to scrutineer the Morgans as they arrived to make his job easier the next day. The ACU needed a track inspection before the event and Eddie Nelson arrived early in the evening to complete this. That success-fully completed, the cables were run out and the large pieces of equipment in place it was time to BBQ. everyone gathered outside the paddock office, the BBQs were lit and in a short time the aroma of charred food drifted towards Lichfield. Cathy Quinn brought salad and Sue brought cakes, Prosecco and Beer to celebrate our 40 Anniversary on the Sunday. Conversations hung in the air and names from the past cropped up like hidden ghosts, Phil Spencer, Dave Caroline, Stu Harper, but all too soon it was 11pm and as people slipped away the bright star of the space station passing silently overhead was taken as prophecy of a good day to come. Sunday at 6.15 was misty but the sun soon

and he would have been so pleased to see so many youngsters ‘having a go’, many of them for the very first time. Steve Lister was due to start the proceedings with OM

4000 but a modern car failure delayed him and first of the 44 entrants away was Martyn Baylis in his 1930 Super Aero. Everything went very smoothly and several cars had double or even treble drivers. Ruth Ross had loaned Clockwork Orange to Ian and Steve Hughes who double drove it, the Pearsons shared Dave Hodgson’s TM car and Becky Washington drove my F-Type for the very first time with a time of 55.79 as did Jim Edwards, from Morgan Agents Oakmere, who joined the club to do it and now wants an F-Type to race and with a time of 48.43 he will do very well - does anyone know of a suitable one for him. Nick Clegg celebrated his birthday with a drive in Danny Hodgson’s F-Type racer and produced an excellent time of 46.05. Hannah Enticknap was also very busy as driver and passenger and had persuaded her dad to come along for the first time in many years. Pete really enjoyed it although his daughter was over 2 seconds quicker. By the end of the day Hamish Bibby took the Racing Class Laurels and Morgan FTD with 38.16 followed by Bill Tuer with 38.45; Maggie Tuer having passengered both. Chas Reynolds and Hannah Enticknap were 3rd with 39.67. John Minns came out of semi-retirement to win Standard Class with 59.65 from Graham and Kathleen Slater with 63.60. TM class was Tony Quinn’s (43.99) but behind him David Polar looked sure of second until Eric Bayley showed his old fire with a run of 47.07 pushing David into 3rd. Cathy Quinn …. cont/ p12

was 3rd and urged on by Petra Rarko, Rob Pike pushed the 1928 Super Aero to 50.61. The 5 Speeder Classes were hard fought. John Scruton put in a banker run of 44.73 which Jackie diplomatically refrained from beating with a final run of 45.03. Graham and Dawn Sherwood had things all their own

tried hard to get below 41 seconds but could only manage 41.26 … enough to better Julia Perry’s 47.19. and consisted of the Buckland Ford driven by Danny Hodgson to a time of 40.05 and Alan Wilcox with 41.38. Also in this class because it had not been through Eligibility was Ned Stephens 1938 F - Super. Ned had worked very hard to get the car to Curborough, borrowed helmet and leathers and rejoined the club but competition is cruel and a persistent fuel problem prevented him registering a time. Well done Ned, it’ll be there next time. Of course the Sprint is as much a social occasion as competition and there were plenty of club members and other spectators to talk to. Many congregated at the paddock entrance where Alistair Rew and John Bradstreet were selling copies of Robin’s book ‘A Morgan - JAP Anthology’. I heard that John had sold almost all of the copies he had with him and Alistair was signing them on his late father’s behalf. Many of us had

lady who works at the ACU. She was fascin-ated by the Morgans and the performance of them and also very complimentary about the way our meeting was run. She particularly praised the commentators, the organisation and the relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Her praise is a tribute to the team who make the event happen and who as much as any of the competitors deserve a mention in dispatches. Our C of C is Phil Reaney who wears a Morgan T shirt and without whom we could not run at all. His wife Lesley spent all day in the hot sun on the start-line. Graham Marshall our Timekeeper was at the start too cocooned all day in a small hut and was indispensable for making sure that the timing gear operates as it should.

Also on the start were George Darbyshire and Phil Bridge setting everyone up for their runs. Phil also completed most of the scrutineering along with Steve Kowalski. The Paddock office is a key place to ensure that things run smoothly and Sue Darbyshire is the perfect person to have in there running things with her quiet authority. A similar authority helps Bob (Colonel) Cope man the Paddock organisation, ensuring everyone goes to and from the assembly area in order and safely. The Marshals volunteer to stand in a post ready to cover any eventuality. They are led by Jim Baker who manned one post with Jim Paxton. In the second post were Steve Boughey, David Paxton and Richard Brown while the most distant post was the domain of Jonathan and Richard Garside, who drove down from Hyde in their Morgan. We also have to produce a programme for the event - which goes to the ACU and although myself and Sue produce the initial copy, it is the generosity of Charlene Pearson and Sue Darbyshire which enabled us to sell copies at a profit. Marie Guess, Sue Weeks and Maggie Bridge sold out most of our stock.

Stewards are an essential part of racing and we have to have an official ACU certified Steward which my Sue is, as well as two club stewards; Bob Towell and Lesley Reynolds took on these tasks. The ACU Steward is the responsible official on behalf of the ACU, who makes sure that everything complies with ACU Standing Regulations and she has to sign off the event as doing such. Many of the people who help are not MTWC members but like to be part of the event. That brings me to the public voices of the meeting, the Commentators. Mike Guess and Laurie Weeks are, without doubt, superb and as Xenia said to Mike, “you have a wicked sense of humour.” It is not an easy job especially when Laurie is reading the time display with a pair of binoculars, No! his eyes are not that bad it is just so far away! So there you have the team which allows Curborough to take place and I would like to thank them all on behalf of the competitors and the spectators.

The Second Round of the MTWC Challenge at VSCC Hawthorn Memorial Trophies Race Meeting.

Thirteen cars were entered for the race and they were warmly thanked by the organisers for their support of the meeting. The Morgans were running under the rules

and as such required a modified circuit layout to the rest of the races – hence they had the last practice and the first race slots - which is how they came to enjoy the heaviest of the rain! Several people commented on how wet and slippery the track was, particularly in the chicanes!

position for the race itself, Chas Reynolds managed a couple of laps before an apparent engine seizure but David Say, with Sue Darbyshire as his passenger (she was driving in the VSCC’s Bill Phillips Trophy Race for Standard and Modified Pre-War Sports Cars – where she came third behind Mike Preston in a Bugatti T35B and Andrew Mitchell in a HRG 1.5 Litre) unfortunately had electrical problems and didn’t start. After a confusion at the start of the race,

wrong, (he forgot that there was a green flag lap (the warm up lap) and set the race off with the lights which confused some drivers and they started to race), the Clerk of the Course decided to red flag the lap to slow everyone down, and return everyone to the grid and start the race proper. Greg Bibby with Paula Heaney unfortun-ately didn’t make the race itself having lost

but miraculously, Chas did – it was only an earth problem and, at the very start of the race he managed to draw level with Hamish, but that was the closest anyone got to challenging Hamish, who put on a fantastic display and was the clear winner. He said he was happy with the conditions, though agreed that it was very slippery and a challenge to keep facing the right direction

all the time. Chas agreed with the race commentator during the presentation for his second place on the podium that Hamish was “not to be kept up with” and a delighted Tom Cowley with Maggie Bridge, in his father-in-law’s car, was over the moon to finish third - his first podium finish!

Iain Stewart, having been up with the leaders during the practice had to retire from the race after the first lap because of a piston tightening up, a problem that has dogged him since he seized the engine at Curborough test day a month ago. The battle for 4th and 5th places between Pete Clews with Becky Washington and Danny Hodgson with Bronte Pearson turned out to be one of their best races for ages and they enjoyed it immensely. Danny got past on lap 2, Pete slipped past again going into the chicane at the bottom of Clay Hill only for Danny to get ahead again on Lap 4. They came up to Druids side by side to the delight of the Marshals. Pete’s mistake at the chicane landed him sideways on the grass and Danny was able to pull into the lead, which he held on to. John and Jackie Scruton did brilliantly in their Standard car, (this was their first track race – John managed to spin completely but still re-joined the race and finished it). Austin Smith and Julia Perry took 6th place and were the highest placed 5 speeders, chasing after Pete Clews for the last lap, Anthony and Verity Pearson took 7th, John and Jackie Scruton were 8th and Graham and Dawn Sherwood 9th – Graham couldn’t get any grip from his rear tyre and had a trip on the grass, which dropped him behind. Huge congratulations to all the drivers and passengers for putting on such a good display of racing for the crowd in the conditions! Steph Wilkinson Kim Allen

When I got to know Steph on a more than ‘platonic’ basis, she had to a greater or lesser degree stood back from racing in a Morgan, right up until the point where Hodge rang,

. A few journeys to Bradford, a tailor-made passenger bench and the car was all ready, made to measure black leathers, black Arai, new race licence, and the team was back together. Oh and somewhere in all of this, it seems that at some alcohol-fuelled weak point, I also agreed to race, and even better …. Danny was willing to passenger! Then followed some of the happiest years, supporting Steph in the life that she loved best, driving all over the UK and continent in the Sprinter with our Morgan in the back, and more race meetings than I can count. She once quoted to me, that sprinting the racer was better than sex, I just hoped that the sprint was quicker.

Steph died quickly, she was ill one day, and gone the next. What more a fitting end that her last journey on this side of the great divide, was on a Morgan, driven by Hodge. I know she could not be in safer hands.

Everyone who has been part of Morgan Three Wheeler racing in the last 40 years will remember Steph. She was Kim Allen’s wife and together they moved to Orkney in 2011. All our thoughts go to Kim, Rose-mary, Vickie, Luke and the children and

especially to Dave Hodgson. Wherever Dave Hodgson was racing Steph was by his side huddled low in the passenger seat. The memory of her presence there will remain. Pete Clews, Competition Secretary

MX2 head castings Our foundry was particularly keen to run the trial casting of new MX2 heads as they knew the deep finning would be real test of their skills. When Peter Faulkner received these prototypes he was very pleased to see the high quality of the result. They are now to go for trial machining. MX4 heads Valve recession has been a problem with many of the original castings and there is concern that there is not enough metal around the valve seats to fit valve seat inserts. As a result, we have made a small modification to the patterns for the new castings so that valve seat inserts can be fitted at a later date. Ford F Super /F4 front exhaust pipes in stainless steel are back in stock. Editor’s note: John Holleran used to offer a conversion for those using a 12 volt system .. does anyone know of an alternative suitable for Twins - either 6 or 12 volt. Has anyone used a magdyno on a 2 speeder or had experience of a dynastart?

In May, Patrick Rollet and his team organised another fine, four-day rally based around Fougere, Brittany. Approximately 150 eye-catching vehicles made the event Mine was the only three wheeler there and my welcome was genuine – the Morgan being parked in the most prominent positions. The public was interested and enthusiastic

We have ignored this rally in recent years and Patrick is keen that we re-establish contact. The date next year is 19-21st May … it’s worth going for those superb roads and lovely countryside alone.

Editors note: I trawled the internet to find

images of the rally and hopefully Roy’s Morgan but without success. So here is a map and some tempting scenery. Oddly, there was

a very prominent image of a Femen activist protesting about Marine le Pen qv. …

...cont/… from P 21 June 16 Refer to the photographs below from the left

MR-7: an ear ly lid has the oil filler hole at the front, maximum thickness at the front is 0.875 inches MR-7 M/: the oil filler hole has been moved to the rear of the lid and the breather moved to the side. Maximum thickness at the front is 0.915 inches. MR-7 M/2: the oil filler hole is in the same position as the MR-7 M/ but the breather hole has been moved further to the drivers side by just over a ¼ ", the thickness at the front is 0.975 inches with the overall thickness been increased to close to 0.060", over the MR-7 M/ lid. Offering

F-Super Morgan, they are the same.

Has the casting number been increased to cover the additional height because of the new F Type constant mesh gears? Why move the breather by a ¼ " ? ... I would think the lid is jigged for drilling both holes not just something the manufacturers have done ‘as near enough’ and is as previously stated, identical to my lid. As a matter of interest, I know several moulds would be used for the casting of the lids, on the MR-7 M/2 lid I have, it can be seen where the oil filler hole has been plugged from the MR-7 lid. Anyone possess a further variation?.. Ed.

Gearbox lids—The Answers Tony Birks

Gearbox lids—The Answers Nev Lear

Interested as always to read Tony Birks items on the above in last month’s Bulletin ... I felt I should add some comments.

Gear Box Tops Trying to recall some items written by the late Clarrie Coombes who was better informed than most; I seem to remember an item where he described how MMC had experimented with location of the gearbox breather in an attempt to keep the oil in the box? Despite my index I can not find or quote the item accurately. Clarrie implied how the standard breather which is shown screwed into the box lid in the left hand photograph always allowed oil to escape because off the ‘standing wave’ generated by the gears when the box was filled to the correct level.

In addition to re-locating the breather the filler plug was also moved as it tended to be obstructed by the body work on some models. The LH cover belonging to the Editor is of course from the ‘R’ type box held on with just four screws and did not have the luxury of a filler plug. Breathers were sometimes also found on top of the rear worm wheel part of the casing where oil was thrown out as normal practice and often piped by owners to lubricate the chain. The standard breather shown was not normally fitted with a pipe although owners very often fitted their own. As described in ‘Best of Clarrie’ instructions as to the correct lubricant to use was often cast into the gearbox top, and some times chiselled off when the advice (but not the casting pattern) was changed!

Motion Picture Library Update Dave Farrow

For those of you who may be interested, here is some information concerning the MPL and the Club property. Richard Atherton has generously donated two of his Morgan video titles to the club. These are HANDMADE -THE MAKING OF A MORGAN and MORGAN 100 - THE 2009 THREE WHEELER SPECIAL and have been registered as Club property. In addition to this he has given permission for the club to view them. However, as I think members can still purchase personal copies of the DVD's it is my intention to withhold them from the MPL until such time as I know they’re no longer available. Earlier in 2014 I completed the editing and titling of the 1977 Irish Rally film I told you of in the last MPL Notes - Dec. 2013. For the future I have also recorded some information and comments about the rally onto the final version of the disc. The playing time is only about 9 minutes which makes it unsuitable for a loan DVD at present. Two further VCDs have been added to the collection making a total of four discs and are as follows: - VCD&MMI - Club Sprint at Madresfield; Malvern Rally Scenes 1960; Club Sprint at RAF Gaydon 1968. VCD/MM2 - a copy of the Club film 'First & Last' VCD/MM 3 - The National Opening Run - Swindon 2009; The Dutch Run 2009. VCD/MM4 - Centenary Anniversary Weekend 2009 by Ken Burton. Note: there is no information concerning the event being a copy of Ken's personal recording. The VCD project was intended primarily for small groups to have access to some of the library titles using laptop computers, even so, the discs are not exclusive to small groups - any Group Organiser (UK) may borrow one. The approximate cost would probably be £1.60: but please do not send any advance payment until asked. I do not intend to produce any further VCD's as no interest has been shown in them. There is unlikely to be much in the way of further additions to the MPL. Years ago people used to use cine cameras to record their memories, later video cameras supplanted these. Nowadays camcorders are

only the province of enthusiasts as most people find smart phones suitable for their needs. The majority of people now apparently store their videos on computers or on the Internet. Whilst the smart phone is fine for such purposes, according to experts, shortcomings are shown up when such videos are viewed on a big screen. This being so, unformatted videos made with smart phones are really not

So, what has been archived to record the past activities of the Club? Simply the loan library now consists of 13 DVD's with a total playing time of approximately 16 hours and 20 minutes. The content varies from talks at a monthly meeting, a record of a Morgan restoration general events including milestones of Club history and various sporting events including sprints and racing. Some are too long at 3 hours and will have to be split. Most recordings have been taken by members, in some cases on film that has been transferred mainly by me and may not always have any sound description although where possible I have added some information. I should like to think the many members and others for their generosity in allowing me to copy their films and videos and without whom there would be no motion picture record of past CIub activities. I must also thank Richard Atherton for his practical help and support. This now brings everything up to date so at last I can start dozing off in my dotage. It has been an interesting twelve years but I must admit at times a somewhat, not unexpected, demanding and frustrating project, despite over fifty years of experience making amateur films and videos: my own fault for insisting on editing the 'as taken' material. Members should note that it is my intention to still add any worthwhile material to the library archive should it be received whether as a master temporary loan or as a gift. Also please note that irrespective of anything else the MPL loan service is still available to

Group Organisers.

Group Reports BROOKLANDS Following my suggestion in last month’s report a few group members contacted me and we arranged a mid-month mid-week pub lunch. We met at the Feathers near

garden. We had two Morgan’s in the car-park which attracted the usual amount of interest. Several people have expressed an interest in a Pub Lunch, Give me a call or email me and I will email the details. If you know of a suitable interesting pub for us to visit let me know. It was warm enough to drive the Sports Family in shirt sleeves. The meeting at the New Inn Send Surrey was a little quite for a summer meeting but there were still Morgans in the car-park. Pete Thompson brought a catalogue of the ever increasing number of Morgan factory parts drawings all of which are available to members to down load. News from Peter Faulkner was that Matchless air cooled cylinder heads may soon become available. Although it’s still early days he told me he will soon have castings to inspect. Sam Smith was describing the Family he now has running. It’s not completely restored but a sound running work in progress. Sam is looking for a new owner. He intended it to be an entry level Morgan preferably for a younger or new member. This month he provided a lucky dip of fluids, oils, cleaners Radweld and cutting fluid. There was nothing left for him to take home. Peter Gibson had a large bronze carb-urettor (not sure of the make). It looked around a 40 mm bore, Surprisingly it was fitted to a BSA Bantam. We were pleased to see Alison Brook and Jean Walpole. Gary has been experimenting with an adjustable oil supply to rocker box on his lawn mower JAP engine, to over-come dry tappets and get a bit more oil into the timing chest. The torn tonneau covers on the Sports Family are being replaced. On such a lovely Morgan driving evening they were

not required…. that is until we arrived home… As I opened the garage doors the heavens opened. We heard that some people experience flash-flooding and even a lighting strike on the house. Summer ay, tut/puff! Bring ‘em out for the July Brooklands Group Mid-Summer Concours - categories for all Morgans to win. Come early to get the judging over with before the Messent’s arrive. Brooklands Museum is holding the Double Twelve two-day event this month. There are Morgans entered for the speed event, driving tests and concourse. A good weekend. August Bank Holiday Sunday we will hold the Picnic on the Lawn At the Elgar’s in Ockley. You just bring something to put on the BBQs - the rest will be provided There will be plenty

It will also be a “Start-up” party. I have promised Peter Elgar that he will have the honour of starting his restored Super Sports for the first time in 30 years. I could have invited egg on my face if it does not happen. Continued: .”OK Barbara - top gear now ... “third gear, Barbara ... Barbara”! “Oh make up your mind ... do you want top gear or third gear?” …. Barbara’s logic. EAST ANGLIA Sad to report, Christine (Chris) was hospitalised for a couple of weeks in May. Good news, is she's back home, in safe hands, recovering. Our thanks for all your messages of support. Sadly no trips in bumpy 2 speeders or even RED F types, for a few weeks! In view of this, Manea week-end ,in July will not happen this year. However, my trusty no. 1, Mr Colin Klyn (01553 840587) will be only too pleased to keep you informed, of future events. Mr Josnes Monthly Meetings-3rd Tues month-Hare Arms Stow Bardolph,Norfolk. 8pm.

EAST ANGLIA – WOOLPIT Star of the show in June was Graham Paize’s Austin Seven Special. Although not a Morgan owner, Graham attends our Woolpit lunch regularly. His entirely home-built silver car shone in the summer sunshine alongside a couple of 5-Speeders, Jeremy’s Lotus,

and a yellow Super-Aero. Finished in polished aluminium with chromed fittings, this slab-tank two-seater must be a devil to keep in such pristine condition. It is reminiscent of a 1950s Cambridge A7 Special, but its lengthened wheelbase, more sophisticated detailing, and 1980s Reliant OHV engine give it an altogether more modern aspect and a substantial performance, Graham admitting that “Although there is more in hand, 80mph is enough for me !”. Hugh Mothersole brought along some interesting period photos of Morgans, including Clive Lones’ famous car. The Pilgrims arrived from an overnight crossing from the Continent, sporting pale blue neckerchiefs as souvenirs of the Grand Prix Retro d’Yvois, at Carignan in the French Ardennes. They reported being the only 3-Wheeler taking part, Cliff Dearden suffering a Helicoil insert coming out whilst changing a plug on his F4. Yvois appears on no map, being the ancient former name for Carignan, so now we know. This very sociable weekend is similar to Le Puy, and they exhort more of us (and you !) to enter next year. The unaccustomed summer temperature caught out ’The Bull’, whose special guest ale “Old Growler” is a strong winter brew from the Stour valley Nethergate Brewery. But we forgave them, for on arrival we found a long table in the bar reserved exclusively for the ten of us. Why not come along and boost our number next month ? Raedwald

EAST MIDLANDS May started, with the Sidecar, Trike and Three Wheeler rally, at Jake’s Café, on the A5. In the Three Wheeler class, there was only my Super Sports, Chris, from the Herts and Beds group in a 5 speeder, and a Lomax which won the Three Wheeler award, which I just did not understand. I was expecting Chris to win - may be it was to do with the young (well, to me) lady owner, with a dog! Bob Morley was going to join us but a head gasket for his LTOWZ engine did not come in time for him to have his lovely Super Sports running in time, otherwise he may have won the class. Also in attendance were Angus Tozer, also from the Herts and

Beds group, and Helen and Ian, from the MSCC, on a Triumph Cub. It was a great day, with a good turn out of 3 wheelers, and solo bikes coming and going all the time, well worth a visit next year. The 18th was the group meeting, where we had 16 people sign the attendance book. There was much talk about the upcoming events and all things Morgan. Paul Baker was on form as usual and it was good to see Chuck, who is glad to be back at work doing 3 days a week. Bob was not in his Morgan, as he was still waiting for a head gasket but Charles was in his Morgan and we went outside to see him off, he said the lights are much better, now he has added the weight of an alternator. The month closed with the funeral of Roger Edmunds, on the 31st. It was only a few day before that I heard the sad news of his passing. Paul Baker, picked me up and we set of for the church - as given on the club website - but it turned out to be a Club daytime trial, as cars were going in all directions trying to find the correct church, which turned out to be in another village altogether. It was good to see a very good turn out but sad to say, the only Morgan there was Roger's family, accompanied by a Ford Model A, and a Bentley. I felt ashamed I had not bothered to go in one of my Morgan's, until I saw all the rain, after we came out of the church. After the funeral, people met up at The Malt Shovel Inn, which brought back memories, as it was opposite Gaydon village hall where for many years, the Club held our committee meetings. While there, I met up with the owner of the Ford A, and I found out that our club is not the only one, with characters in it, hearing of the events they got up to .. and Rogers other interests. I had known Roger for many years but did

to respect him and his way of conducting life. The club will be much poorer with his passing, the group send our sympathy to all the family. The group e-mails are used for events updates, if you are not on the mailing list, and want to be included, please let me know, many good local things crop up at short

FAR, FAR SOUTH WEST The sun is finally shinning, holiday makers are back enjoying all that Cornwall has to offer, start of the steam rally season together with a variety of social events around the county., the only downside is the much increased traffic situation, not so easy in a Morgan keeping the car off the boil while stuck in traffic. Mid May, another good turn out for our group meeting at the Fox & Hounds, a chance to catch up with all our news from the members. Although we can only count three Morgans on the road, there are another three under restoration, completion dates unknown there is always at our meetings afair amount of exchange of information and advice to help others, we do enjoy each others company and camaraderie, that's what our little group is all about. VMCC activities this period, attending their lunch meet at the Quintrill Inn and taking part in the round Britain baton ralley, carrying the baton from the Devon border down to Lands End. VSCC group organiser is to discontinue their group meetings at the Hawkins Arms because of the dwindling membership attendance even though there are at least sixty members in Cornwall. Early June saw many of us attend the ever popular Black & White breakfast meet at the Fox & Hounds, surprising what a little bit of sunshine will do to bring enthusiasts out, lots of classic bikes, interesting cars, more than thirty plus vintageers in attendance. Took the F2 up to MTWC Curborough sprint, (around trip of some 600miles) to try

and improve my time from last year, the F2 now has a Morris four speed gear set installed, 1st gear seemed too low for sprinting, using second, third and top gave a better result, almost gaining a second over last years time, a very satisfying day all round, great weather and a chance to meet up with many old friends. Finally, Ken Burton contacted me to tell of his run in with a black Ferrari though Penzance recently, Ken was able to stay ahead of the Ferrari through a number of roundabouts, but, was finally caught at a Zebra crossing, the Ferrari drew along side the Morgan, the driver commented to Ken, he had not had that much fun in a long time, how about that !! WEST Numbers down by 3 as the duo from Cornwall were unable to attend and Ted forgot, despite my reminder! The bonus however was that the rest of us were able to add Ted's share of the sausage platter to our own plates, (but I am sure his presence would have been preferred). The group was split by two separate discussions, those nearest the bar delving into the requirements and design criteria for the "Simple" car, and the other group discussing the pros and cons of cruising, (the maritime variety), as Bob and Wendy Clements were soon to depart on one of their nautical jaunts. Politics again raised its head as the Referendum nears and will be over by the time this report hits the Press. My only input was to draw the clan's attention to the report from the latest group of "Experts", on the Remain or Leave Question. Apparently, 600 Astrologers (you know, they write those Horoscope things in the Daily Star and other comics that my wife reads out to me while I am doing the

Pisceans could see a change in our fishing rights. If you are Capricorn, good news, the price of goat meat will plummet, almost as much as the pound, so little change there. Should there be threat of World War Three,

My dissertation at the last Honiton lunch was not on basket weaving but basket cases ... and I have known a few. Thought for the day - Once upon a time there were two Scotsmen. Now look how many there are! (All comments are non-political, non-racist and of a vaguely jocular nature.) Mike Goldring. Next meeting: The Westward Inn, Lee Mill,

HERTS, BEDS AND BUCKS. I blame Global Warming and the E.U. - this year we have not yet had one meeting

Our May meet was a horrible wet day but still well attended by stalwart long distance

The proposed pre-Mog Meet train trip (on the Leighton Buzzard Railway in June) was discussed and interested parties' names taken. Chris Hewitt was seeking a suitable local

of a 'heavy' 3 Wheeler could be a stumbling block – maybe? His dealer “could get it done in 3 weeks” but would need to transport it elsewhere! Your scribe later joined the Ramblers for a brief hard-surface walk, admiring the flora and fauna and local guard dogs! It came on to rain and our discussion changed to the questionable efficiency of Army Greatcoats when wet! Joan and Brenda reported seeing not only sheep and pigs but goats with curly horns in The Field! Funny – I could only see sheep when I looked later. The Threewheeler Meet at Jack's Hill Cafe

north of Towcester (15th May) was not over subscribed with proper Three Wheelers. Chris and Barbara Hewitt in their 5 Speeder and Malcolm Bull (East Midlands GO) in his green Super Sports flew the flag for the MTWC. Not another Mog to be seen. There was one Lomax, (which won the award…Ed)

Anniversary. Whitewebbs Museum. Enfield. LANCS AND LAKES After the great opening run events this year I thought that the rest of May might have been a bit quiet on the M3W front but of course it wasn’t. After a few days of frantic work and last minute problems we managed to get Val’s F4 finished (ish!) and back on the road for the first time since 1992 at the beginning of June. We have just returned from 4 glorious days in North Wales with the NW “A” team on their annual jaunt with 12 members in 8 Morgans (2 JAP, 4 Matchless and 2 F-types). The F4 completed her maiden voyage of 95 miles to Betws-y-Coed without trouble! Unfortunately Neil’s JAP developed some ominous transmission noises on the final day and he decided not to drive it any further so travelled back home courtesy of the AA. Hopefully it will not be too serious and is fixable in time for the two imminent Lakes camping weekends We also had a great day at the Curborough sprint on the 5th June in glorious sunshine. Ian and I shared Ruth Ross’s Clockwork Orange for the day (many thanks again Ruth). The event was a most fitting tribute to Robin Rew who will be greatly missed by his many friends in the MTWC. His book “A Morgan-JAP Anthology” was launched posthumously at the sprint by John Bradshaw and is a highly recommended addition to your bookshelves.

Now we have the 50th Buttermere camping weekend in a few days time and we are praying for some dry weather and hope to catch up with more old friends there. A few of the NW group are staying over at Garstang on the Thursday night on the way up to the Lakes and as that coincides with our June group meeting it should be a good one with lots of Morgans present! Deryck’s JAP twin is currently at Peter Pattinson’s for some more TLC and Pete and I are hoping to get it fully sorted in time for the camping weekend. This month is also tinged with a little sadness for me as we are saying goodbye to Alan Turner as he finally completes his uprooting from Preston and relocation to Holland. We have been friends for 50 years and he first got me involved in Morgans back in 1968 when he acquired his derelict R type Sports Family. He has just got it back together with a new rear crankcase and will be driving it over to Holland before the end of the month. Alan and Cora are getting married on the 5th July (now to be called No Longer Independence Day) and we send them our best wishes for the future. They are living only an hour away from Zandvoort so hope to see them in October! I hope that you are all enjoying the warm weather and managing to use your Morgans! NORTH WEST It is the nature of Roy’s Jaunt that it has to be a small event. Roy says he’s going to be doing such and such and a few like-minded enthusiasts will gird up their Morgans and go and keep him company. This year 5 twins and 2 F-types joined Roy and Angela’s MX4 for five days exploring the delights of North Wales in beautiful sunshine. Portmeirion, the Great Orme, Bodnant Gardens and so on. It’s not a Club event and, sorry chaps, it wouldn’t be the same if it got any bigger. I missed out this year but it won’t stop me relating stories of F-types with collapsing passenger seats and someone’s Morgan coming home on a colour co-ordinated yellow breakdown truck. There is also a story of a very friendly local officer of the law being persuaded to trap “T.D.” and issue him with a ticket.

35

However, as this was all in the local tongue, T.D. is still puzzling as to what he’s been done for! On to more traditional activities, we had a selection of three and four wheelers supporting our racers at Oulton Park. We didn’t have any 5 Speeders in our convoy as our local lads were already splashing out around the circuit and learning that all that S&S power teaches you that the grass is even slippier than a flooded track. The May Whipping Stocks meet was very well supported with dinners al fresco, and the arrival of Ian Haynes newly bodied Super Aero from Fairbourne Carriages, albeit as yet without motor, had everyone out in the carpark. For the Club’s Curborough Sprint we were back in the sunshine again, but with the “Jaunters” away we failed to have any Morgans giving spectating support although the Garsides did make the journey in their lovely twin in order to fulfil their scrutineering duties and John Minns drove there, won his class and drove home all in his 1927 sidevalve Aero. “Borrow my Morgan, borrow my wife” seems to be Bill Tuer’s generous philosophy while letting Hamish Bibby beat him for FTD, while Pete Clews was running the meeting and letting all sorts have a go in his F-type. Nice people in the North-west. My own efforts this month will be mainly in France including the Gran Prix Retro. I have not arranged a lunch meet at The Smoker, but if anyone is prepared to pick up the baton I will help get the message to all. Those going on Trevor’s Seathwaite Camping Weekend should be home in time. I’ll be back for the Whipping Stocks. Mike Guess 8th, 9th, 10th July, Seathwaite Camping 13th July, Lunch if someone takes the initiative 29th July, The Whipping Stocks evening. A 50 , Lower Peover

OXFORD Nothing much to report this month, except that last month's meeting we discovered that Brakspeares Brewery are selling the freehold of The Abingdon Arms, so we may have to consider moving to yet another

venue in the not too distant future.

Meanwhile, this month's meeting is on a Sunday, so let's have a good turnout. Bob Cragg

Next Meeting: Sunday 31st July, The Abingdon Arms, Beckley, noon.

SCANDINAVIAN The spring in Sweden has been fantastic for Morgan 3W driving, but we have been totally occupied by house and garden work, restoration of our sailing boat and, not the least, grandchildren. I think that we have taken down around 30 fairly big trees and it takes time to take care of them. We have more than that take next winter. So Penny has been staying in the garage in spite being ready to go. That’s a pity but we are trying hard to get all the time we can for the boat. In fact I think that it would be beneficial for the Group if someone more active and living closer to other active members took over as a GO. Think about it for our AGM at the Viking Run in August. I started the initial work to create this Group after the AGM of MTWC in September 2000 and have been the GO since we formed the Group in Gothenburg 2001. I simply can’t find the time and spirit I had in the earlier years. We wish you all a good summer and look forward to see you in Horsens. Lennart Nilsson SCOTLAND and NORTH EAST Keith Hayes news and pics: ‘We had a good drive it day run down here and I got some good pictures with Mog in the local paper. Last week we had our local club Open Run and did around 100 miles altogether ending up at Drumlanrigg House for lunch. Bryan was out too. Went to a local show on Sunday, good turn out of cars but only one Mog!!! Next big run will be the VMCC run at Denholm near Hawick on the 19th June.’ He may be down in Malvern for the AGM again this year. Thirlestane feedback: The Thirlstane Castle Rally in Lauder was a large gathering again this year, and we managed 4 members attending – Jill and I in the Supersport, Tom Rae in his Pembleton (it does have 3 wheels…) and Paul Jowitt…in his Jowett…(it has 4 wheels). So pretty impressive, really! In his defence, Tom puts in

some pretty high mileages in the Pembleton, and was off again shortly to tour the Hebrides. No useful spares in the auto jumble, but I invested in a knee-saving foam mat for the next engine removal - can't be far away, I'm sure. Roger Harris phoned me today, following a Humber run into Scotland. He encountered a JAP Super Aero on a roundabout on the A75, driven by a bearded man with a friendly wave (definitive description of MogMan?) He wondered if it was one of us but, sadly, there are only two 2-speeders in the group, one belongs to George Corbet in Morpeth, and the other to Peter Graham, who still has to put it together, so Not one of us. An advance reminder of Paul's BBQ on Saturday 3rd Sept, same weekend as the Bo'ness Hill Climb, so worth coming along I am pleased to announce two new Scot/NZ members!...well they are in the family. Predictable proud Grandad shot of grandchildren in the Mog – if it gets printed!

Nothing else forthcoming from the rest of you, so keep me updated about anything coming up through the summer and Autumn – I have an invitation from the organiser of the The Scottish Retro and Classic Car Show. The event takes place at Driftland, Lochgelly on 21st August. All pretty Supercar stuff, but

he was asking if we had any racers in the group who could do some demo laps. We don't, but if it appeals to any of the racing fraternity further afield, let me know. Finally, the sad news about the death of Steph Allen only reached me late, but I have sent condolences to Kim on behalf of the group. Dan SOUTH COAST Some years ago, after a school term during which I had been involved in an escapade or two, my housemaster’s report described me as “easily led”. This displeased me as I had hitherto regarded myself as a ringleader rather than a foot-soldier. But maybe he was right; I have now been led astray by that shocking influence, Steve Terry. Inspired by the previously-reported wheelspin incident in Grahame Joseph’s garden and egged-on by Steve, I have entered Maud in the Firle Hill-Climb in September. This recently-revived event involves three non-competitive runs up the winding, single-track Bo-Peep Lane to a spectacular finish at the summit of the South Downs overlooking the sea. My ambition is to reach the top at least once. To the great disappointment of one-and-all, V Twin had to withdraw from his eagerly-awaited “Cartooning” presentation at the May meeting. He had been suffering from such severe back-pain that the car-ride to Chiddingly, even as a passenger, could not be contemplated. We wish him a speedy return to fitness and look forward to his talk - hopefully rescheduled to later this year. Such was their resilience, the company of thirty-one rose to the occasion and made a particularly jolly evening of it. On my rounds I was astonished to learn that several cars which I had previously considered part of the very DNA of their owners had changed hands. New members Roy and Ann Plummer have now acquired a nice Sports Two-Seater. Mark Harley’s lovely F-Type was the sole Morgan there; he was rewarded with a round of applause and a severe drenching on his homeward drive. The vicar of Brede popped out of his church just as I burbled down Waterworks Lane en route to the start of the Primrose Run on 4th June. As I doffed my cap and we

37

exchanged a cheery “Mornin’” I sensed good omens for the day. The colossal steam engines were installed in the Brede valley in 1904 to provide an expanding Hastings with the water-supply it demanded. We were treated to a fascinating tour. Then a thirty-mile run through breath-taking East Sussex countryside took us to Pevensey. Once the Morgans of Messrs. Clark, Joseph, Pachol, Price, Robards, Williams and Young were safely parked in the shadow of the Roman castle our party of twenty-five settled to a relaxed and convivial pub-lunch in the sunshine. Sadly, Mandy and Nicky never reached Brede but their safe arrival at Pevensey sporting bespoke, home-crocheted Primrose Run bonnets was one of the many highlights of the day.

Congratulations to Michael and Howard Joseph; they drove furthest in a Morgan and claimed the Ken Boulter Cup. A huge thank you to Steve Terry and Jo for putting on a truly memorable day. Our exciting flying day at Slinfold is on 3rd July. I have already sent full details by email. Stephen Clark Sunday, 3rd July. Flying Day at Slinfold Airstrip near Horsham. Wed.20th July, 8.00 pm. SOUTH EAST “Any member who wishes to join fellow enthusiasts on the SE Group weekend at Stiffkey, Norfolk from 8th to 10th July should contact Howard Andermahr on 01494 862762 or Bob Wood on 0208 462 6466 immediately. While there are still a few hardy souls who prefer to sleep under

canvas, camping is not an obligation, all are welcome whether in a caravan or motor home or staying in bed and breakfast or hotel accommodation.” At the meeting of the Wednesday Irregulars on 11th May, those present watched a recording of the BBC4’s programme entitled “Magnificent Machines – the Golden Years of the British Sports Car”, which had been screened on Monday 9th May, only to find that it did not even acknowledge the Morgan as a British sports car. Too traditional perhaps! Shame on the programme makers! Dennis Plater would like to thank Dave Fripp and all the other Group members who helped him at meetings and in the work done on Dennis’ F Super Sports in recent months. Several members enjoyed the Dutch Opening Run at the end of May, despite the rain and cold wind that prevailed in the Netherlands. Martin Brown’s wife, Sue, had the misfortune to break her kneecap and severely damage her left leg while mowing the grass at their new home shortly after their return from the Dutch Opening Run. We all wish her a speedy return to full health. While she is recovering, Martin is having to hone his long-dormant domestic skills. If any member would like to join in the SE Group camping weekend to be held at Stiffkey, Norfolk from 8th to 10th July they should contact Howard Andermahr on 01494 862762 or Bob Wood on 0208 462 6466 as soon as possible. The Group meeting on 4th June was well attended, and those present examined the control lever Colin had brought along. Colin was the only member to drive his three-wheeler to the meeting. An unfortunate clash of dates means that the Group AGM will now be held at the September meeting. The well-attended meeting on Wednesday 8th June saw no less than three 5 speeders and one vintage Austin 7 van parked at or near to the venue! Members were astonished to find themselves in the dry under the car port despite the torrential rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning outside. When it came to going home the disadvantages of

19 People attended The Park Hotel meeting on Saturday 4th June; 5 twins; 1 F Super; 1 Plus 8 and a 1920’s Sporting Austin 7 complete with boat tail, owned by MTWC member, Tom Langham. Tom also has a completely original, unrestored 1934 F4. Special guests were Adrian Murray-Leslie on a ‘meet the troops’ visit and Udo Sollner from Germany, who is restoring Michael Staines’ old MX4 Beetle Back SS, with the help of Ian Parkinson. Pat and Dawn Bastock also came along to present the GO with the two rebuilt front wheel hubs for his Aero, complete with Colin Wilson brakes – the Princess will be delighted! We had a two minutes silence in memory of our two South West group stalwarts of years gone by, Roger Edmonds and Ken Edwards, who recently passed away. Both

Ken’s Cooper JAP were a delight. After sitting down to dinner, while being entertained by 1971s videos of Morgan racing etc., a few of us moved onward down the A38 to Nick Taylor’s house for tea and truly fantastic cakes in the garden. The GO

once again made a fool of himself by falling backwards off the table when taking a group photo. Sorry Nick for the dent in the BBQ.

when upending during Morgan events (memories of 1976 come flooding back). Please all note that the next Park Hotel meeting will be on Saturday 30th July ( more tea and cakes I suppose .. Ed) in order to avoid a clash with the Goggles and Gauntlets weekend being held in our area. A few of us are hoping to attend Bob and Jill Lock’s Steam Garden Party, which we have been invited to again on Sunday 24th July, 12:00 noon, see previous Bulletins for details. All are invited. Further ahead, put Saturday 20th August in your diaries for a 5 star event. Mike and Kay Sythes are organizing the White Horse Run/walking treasure hunt around Laycock, finishing up with a BBQ at their house in Whitley. More details in August Bulletin and Round Robins. WEST MIDLANDS At the end of May, a small but very select group of us gathered for lunch at the Dragon Hotel in Montgomery prior to visiting the Cloverlands model car museum. Only one Morgan trike was in attendance, belonging to Joyce and Keith Mottershead. This was particularly praiseworthy as, owing to malfunction, they had to bring it on a trailer. However, this did allow a thorough inspection of its mechanicals by the rest of us without having to bend down (see photo). The museum had a huge selection of car models, including a couple of Morgan three-wheelers. The curator subjected us to a survey of our first cars and congratulated us that a majority of those present had started their driving in Morgan three-wheelers. He also explained the origins of the collection and the remarkable lady who had put it together. A very traditional local hardware shop was then inspected and tea and stickies overlooking the picturesque town square

finished off our visit prior to an exceedingly wet drive home. As announced last month, we have been invited to the Stoke Lacy village fête on Saturday, 9th July. Unfortunately, this falls on the same weekend as the Chateau Impney hillclimb but those of you who are not attending that event may wish to take part, particularly in view of its appropriate location. The fete will be held in the grounds of Stoke House, which was the residence of Dorothy Morgan, and may be remembered by those who attended the similar event as part of the centenary celebrations. There will be various displays, including search dogs and alpacas, archery, refreshments and traditional garden fete stalls. The Wye Valley brewery is up the road and the village church, spiritual home and last resting place of many of the Morgan family is just opposite. The entrance will be signed off the A465 Bromyard to Hereford road and we are requested to arrive between 12 and 2 p.m. when the fete will be opened by Charles Morgan. Please let me know if you are likely to attend so that I can give the organiser an idea of numbers. On the 14th August, the day following the club Training Day, a joint MTWC/MSCC picnic and gymkhana will take place at the traditional venue of Madresfield Court. Please see elsewhere in the Bulletin for more details. You are very welcome to come

along and spectate, even if you don’t want to compete. Please note that access will be from the B4424 Powick to Upton-upon-Severn road, not via the main entrance at Malvern Link. Dave Saturday, 9th July, Stoke Lacy Village Fete. Stoke House, Stoke Lacy. Wednesday, 13th July, Mid-month Meeting. Fruiterer’s Arms, Ombersley 20:00 Wednesday 27th July, Monthly Meeting. The Clent Club 20:00 YORKS., NOTTS. & DERBYS. I am not going to bother with the meeting apart from saying the attendance was poor, no Morgans in the car park, and the weather, after a beautiful weekend, was rubbish. But perhaps we can make allowances from the excellent ‘Not the Night Trial’ and ‘Opening Run’ support. Future Events – the response to the ’Amen Corner’ experience and Rufford Park visit was very mediocre and the price quoted, although not out of this world, wasn’t worth following up if take up was to be poor, so I have put that on hold and continue to wait for ideas for runs that you want to attend. Any suggestions welcome please give me a ring on 01709 379037, grab me at the meetings or via Heather by email [email protected] – anything considered! Eric 12th July The Bay Horse, Scholes. Latest update: The bar where the MTWC has traditionally gathered on the first evening has closed and no suitable alternative has been found. If there is any better late news I will try to email it to anyone who lets me have their address. The organisers are sponsoring the Friday night street party again but this hasn’t universally appealed to the U.K. contingent. You may wish to consider

your alternatives for that evening. Remember to br ing your Morgan insurance certificate with you for signing on. Boringly, I always repeat this. The round-the-houses chase is not a race. Demonstrating your skill ahead of your speed will help to ensure we have an event for another year. Make allowances, particularly for Darmonts with string brakes and no mirrors.

9th Dutch Run Marten van der Boon and Janny Hoekstra

From June 9th till 13th, we had our 9th Dutch Run. With us were fourteen other three-wheelers: from GB, one from Belgium and John Hameleers, Bertus and Francis Dierink (in tintop), John Graal/Carla Mudde and Bert en Liesbeth van de Zand from Netherlands. Our base camp for these days was hotel De Oorsprong in Sint Nicolaasga (Friesland), where the staff was very friendly and we had superb food (only Bruce was thinking the place was running short of staff). Although June, the weather was not at its best: Several showers, but we also saw the sun. The worst was the wind, that made the real temperature of 10 degrees C not warmer, specially in this flat part of our country. On Saturday we drove of (Van de Zand only a few meters, something broke in the bevelbox and Rodijns only a few miles, something made the engine boiling) for the Lake route, about 80 miles. Friesland is famous for its lakes and the connecting waters. We had coffee in Woudsend and we visited a model railway museum in Sneek

and had lunch with a view on the Sneekermeer. On Whitsunday we drove the IJsselmeer route, about 105 miles. Along the coast to Hindeloopen for coffee and up North to Harlingen, a small North Sea harbour, where we had lunch. Is this all what can be told about this Dutch Run? No! Although we were on our way from 8.30 till 17.00 on Saturday and from 9.30 till 17.30 on Sunday (it looks like working days, but they weren’t), we all were communicating and socialising from nearly sunrise till sunset; sometimes with a sponge or spanner in our hands and at other times with a cup of coffee or a glass of beer (one was spotted with such a thing in a moving threewheeler) or handling our cutlery. One evening we made it late, doing games. In short: we had fun and nice days, the threewheelers connecting us all. We enjoyed the weekend and say thank you for coming (and driving carefully)!

John has kindly submitted (thanks John) some twenty plus tips which will appear as space permits … Ed

Any branch of Wilco or similar sell an LED light attached to a headband. As well as a useful torch, they become a boon if you break down at night on your own. Most of them have two or three brightness settings. A couple of spare batteries in a plastic container will ensure enough light for even a tyre or tube change.

On three-speeders, 2nd gear jumping out can sometimes be prevented by substituting the 3/8” ball bearing in the top hat detent plunger for a smaller metric one. Whilst you have it removed place a 3/16” spring washer behind the spring to strengthen and take up the difference.

If you cannot obtain the correct brake linings and then take your shoes to a specialist, be aware that modern bonded material is unsuitable for mechanically operated brakes. Cable brakes work best with a woven material which is normally riveted on due to its open weave constituent. This material is still used on machinery band brakes to this day. Any company that deals with the construction and mining industry will have it in stock.

For normal road use on OHV twins triple valve springs are far too strong, and only serve to accelerate wear of the timing components. For many years I have run

without the middle spring. The small inner spring is more than adequate to avoid valve drop in the event of an outer spring failure that thankfully modern Mogspares springs have largely banished. An added bonus is that it quietens the timing chest.

Friction free cable entry to the carbs on twins can be made from 4”-5” of aluminium tubing of at least 17/64ths” ID to clear the ferrule. Make a right angle bend of around 1”-2” radius and then drill out the last half inch to 5/16” to clear the adjusting screw on top of carb. A slightly smaller radii one will serve for the air slide cable. This looks neat and extends cable life. You can use old JAP push rods or ‘car boot’ shoe rack tube. Remember to check or drill out the clearance before bending and drill the end afterwards.

For fitting windscreen glass, forget about fiddling with rubber strip. Use black mastic sealant from your local DIY and apply liberally to the groove. After fitting the glass, use plenty of soapy water to remove excess and give a perfect neat finish to this difficult job.

When fitting new tyres and tubes, to avoid hurting your knuckles whilst trying to insert the tube, fit the very slightly inflated tube inside the tyre first. Once the tyre is on the first bead, a pair of long nosed pliers will usually serve to insert the valve into the rim hole.

WHEEL BUILDING All types - Heavy-duty spokes. Well-proven. 2 and 3 speeder rims in stock.
