workwise

There are may businesssituations that can

make you feel stressed. Ameeting with the boss, a salescall, giving a speech, or speak-ing out to present an idea at ameeting, just to name a few.

The basic tools for perform-ing well under these circum-stances are preparation andself-confidence, but some-times they aren’t enough.

• It helps to calm yourselfbefore a meeting with physicalexercise to decrease youradrenaline level. Take a walk orpush on a wall to burn adrena-line. Walk slowly to the meet-ing to reduce your heart rate.

• Focus on the material andthe information you have too"er. Don’t think about your-self or the impression you aremaking.

• Know that you don’t haveto be perfect. If you make amisstep, just move on.

• When speaking to a group, remind yourself that the audi-ence really doesn’t care verymuch about how you look orwhether you are a goodspeaker. They are interested inyour subject.

• Some advisors recommendfinding one or two agreeablefaces in an audience and look-ing at them rather than scan-

ning an entire group.• Avoid nervous gestures

such as putting hands in andout of pockets, buttoning andunbuttoning a jacket, moving ahand to your eyeglasses, ortoying with a pencil.

• If the situation allows it,focus on the others at a meet-ing and let them do more ofthe talking.

• Psychologists say it’s im-portant to look at the personyou are talking to. Even if youdon’t make eye contact, whichis best, look at them.

With practice and more self-confidence, you won’t looknervous even if you are.

Summer is here, and the days are warm and sunny again. But if you’re not careful, an afternoonon the beach or in the park can lead to a case of sunburn. And worse: Overexposure to the sun’sultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) can damage your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Sun-screen will offer some protection (though some researchers argue that it doesn’ prevent melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer), but you’ve got to follow the directions. Here’s some advice:

• Sun block, by the numbers. Pick the right protection in the first place: A Sun Protection Factor(SPF) of 15 will block about 93 percent of harmful UVB rays; SPF 50 screens out 99 percent. Applyyour sunscreen 30 minutes before going out. This gives your skin adequate time to absorb it.

• Apply sufficient amounts. Experts advise applying at least one full ounce of sun-screen before going out—roughly enough to fill a shot glass. Reapply your lotionevery two hours, and after swimming or exercising enough to raise a sweat. Duringa long day outdoors, you should use from one-quarter to one-half of an eight-ouncebottle. Remember to apply sunscreen to often-overlooked areas of your body likeyour ears, lips, and feet.• Minimize exposure. Think of sunscreen as a second line of defense against sun-

burn and skin damage, not your primary protection. Wear a broad hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing, and try to avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.,

when the sun is strongest and the atmosphere absorbs less UV radiation than it does dur-ing the rest of the day.

Enjoying the sun—while avoiding the burn

Summertime Food Safety

Potlucks and barbecues aregreat ways to take advantage ofthe summer sun, but the higherheat can also increase the chancesof food poisoning. Keep these tipsin mind as you plan your picnic.

KEEP IT COOL. Perishables likepotato salad and meats should bekept at or below 40 degreesFahrenheit, rather than set out towarm on the picnic table. Stash itin a cooler with ice packs, andopen the lid as little as possible.

SEPARATE PLATES. If you toteraw hamburger to the grill on oneplate, don’t use that plate for thecooked patties. The same rulegoes for utensils that touched rawmeat.

COOKS SHOULD WASH THEIRHANDS. If you shred salad leavesafter grilling chicken, you couldunintentionally add raw meatjuices to the veggies. A thoroughhand washing will take care ofmost problems. No nearby sink?Don’t forget to pack theantibacterial hand sanitizer.
