News from Year 9

We are reading a novel called ‘Catcher in the Rye’. We have focused on word problems and quadratic equations in maths. We have studied different conflicts in Britain in history and all about air pressure in geography. We’ve been learning how to use the past tense and the imperfect tense in French and in music we researched some of the most famous classical composers and created presentations about them. We’ve practiced combining colours in art and played basketball and netball in PE.

Early Years

Years 1 & 2

News from the Classroom In maths we have been learning about number problems. We discussed the capacity of shapes. In literacy we have learned different letters including words beginning with H. We have learnt the names of 2D shapes. In PE we have been practising our balancing.

We have been learning about changes in history and the weather in our science and topic lessons. In literacy we have looked at poetry, punctuation, nouns and verbs as well as giving instructions. We’ve learnt about the different continents of the world and found them on a map.

Year 3 In literacy we have learnt about kennings and alliteration. In maths we have learnt about adding and subtracting fractions. In science, we have learnt about flowers and the parts of a flower. In topic, we learnt about Christopher Columbus. In art we have been making flowers out of coiled paper – it takes a lot of concentration!

Year 5 & 6 We have written our own recounts about an imaginary story where we were stuck on an island, like Michael from Kensuke’s Kingdom. In maths we’ve been learning how to use a protractor and the Year 6’s have been finding missing numbers in algebra. We have learnt about the theory of evolution during science lessons. You can read more about our topic of Stone Age to Iron Age times in the special article about our trip to Oldupai Gorge.

In literacy we have been looking at play scripts and we memorised certain parts. In maths we have been looking at measurements. In topic we have been learning all about the Vikings and we made Viking books with lots of information in them. In science, we wrote about rocks and plants.

Year 7 & 8 In literacy, we have been learning the key grammatical terms that make up the parts of a sentence. We have looked at geometry and rotating shapes to a certain angle around a point. In science we have looked at cells of both animals and plants and compared the two. In geography, we have looked at climates and compared different climates from around the world.

Monday assemblies are all about our motto – In Our Time Let Us Do Good. Ms. Tieszen leads these assemblies and reminds us how to be nice to each other. She asked us to imagine that our bed and desk could talk and what would they say if we didn’t keep them ordered and clean. We learnt that it’s important to look after your things and clean up after ourselves.

Year 5 & 6

Oldupai Gorge Trip The Year 5s and 6s had an incredible 3-day trip up to Arusha Region. We were shocked to have our own plane for the short flight and were grateful to Nicole for spotting the elephant on the drive to our hotel. We settled into our comfortable rooms and enjoyed a splash in the pool with Mrs Maregeli. Dinner was delicious and we all slept well that first night.

Basketball matches

We’ve had 2 basketball matches against other school teams. The first games were again Laureate and the next were against HOPAC. We definitely improved our skills from one game to the next and we aim to win the future games. Thank you to Mr Materu for organising these fun occasions.

Dates to remember: Science Fair: 28th April Eisteddfod: 25th May ½ Term: 26th May The Latham Summer Fête 24th June End of School Year: 30th June

Please help out the Roots & Shoots

group by bringing in 1.5l plastic bottles and 12l plastic Uhai bottles. These are for our recycled

garden – we need just a few more so please bring them

in!

On the final day, we thoroughly enjoyed the Massai Culture Visit and spent all our pocket money on Massai souvenirs! Overall, it was a brilliant trip – even the scary, bumpy flight back to a wet Dar es Salaam!

We were incredibly lucky to be able to have time to drop down into the crater and do a game drive. We saw all sorts of animals; the highlights were definitely finding the large lion pride and catching a glimpse of rhinos.

When we arrived at Oldupai Gorge, the guide told us all about how the Leakey’s discovered many archaeological artifacts in the surrounding area and particularly mentioned the fossilized stone tools. In the museum we read loads of information about Oldupai Gorge and we took lots of notes for our projects.

It was an early start on the Thursday as we headed off for Ngorongoro National Park. At the gates, we were happy to find lots of information in the small museum and began our fact-finding task! We were amazed to learn that Ngronogoro Crater used to be a volcano bigger than Mount Kilimanjaro before it imploded on itself.
