Hanover Area PROBUS Club Established September, 2014 www.hapc.ca May 2018
The first year of the provost golf club was a huge success. It was a sketchy start in May with many cancellations due to soggy conditions. But by June and July we were golfing regularly. A different course each week, whenever we could arrange a good deal! Courses played included Black Horse, Highland Glen, Pike Lake, Northern Dunes and Saugeen. In August we began to replay course favourites. Although our group size varied from 4 to 18, good time was always guaranteed. We plan to play throughout September and into October if weather permits. It was a fantastic season! Consider joining us next year.

Cargoe, Mary Cargoe, Ted Jackowski, Randall De Kraker, Jackie Meagher and Bob Meagher.
Pat Onions, a World War Two veteran who had served on the Corvette Sackville, reminded us of an
important date in world history. VE Day May 5, 1945. We all remember November 11 but this too is a
date of great significance. Thank you Pat for your service to our country.
April was Cancer awareness month. Our guest speaker was Jeff Van Geem.
Guest Speaker Geoff Van Geem
Manager – Canadian Cancer Society of the Bluewater and Perth Huron Regions.
Nina McTeer introduced Geoff, a well-known local with his roots in Durham.
This month’s speaker is particularly relevant as April is Daffodil month, one of the
biggest fundraisers for the Canadian Cancer Society. The daffodil is a symbol of courage
and strength for the Society. Many of the various fundraising programmes haves
merged with the Canadian Cancer Society to amalgamate their support for services,
prevention, management and research for cancer issues.
Cancer is the #1 killer in Canada. Seventy years ago the survival rate with a cancer
diagnosis was 25%; now the survival rate is over 60%. Cancer isn’t one disease and
therefore there isn’t one solution. The vision of the Canadian Cancer Society is to create
a world where no one fears cancer. Preventing cancer from ever happening in the first
place is an important focus for the organization. Two of their successful campaigns have
involved the awareness of sun damage campaign and HPV inoculations for boys.
The Canadian Cancer Society is Canada’s largest funder of cancer research. A focus on
immunotherapy research is looking at ways to allow your body itself to fight the cancer
cells. Funding is also provided for research into rare/unusual cancers such as Retinal
Blastoma that now has a very high cure rate.
For those looking for help and answers regarding cancer, the Society funds a help line.
Contact 1 888 939 3333 or www.cancer.ca. Also available is a Smoker’s Help Line
(smokershelpline.ca or call 1 877 513 5333). This smoker’s help line can help set up an
individualized plan for those who want to quit.
Wheels of Hope provides rides for those in need of cancer treatments. The demand for
this service has been increasing significantly to the point that for the first time requests
have had to be denied. This is not a government funded program. In 2017 we had 94
local volunteer drivers, 8,847 trips, 371 local client and drivers clocked 503, 371 kms.
Drivers are needed.
Peer Support is a telephone matching programme that is also available for caregivers.
The programme tries to match an individual as closely as possible with someone in the
same situation. Contact cancerconnect.ca . On-line, 24/7 support is available
Thanks to Jan Stocovaz for writing this article.
Donna Love gave a heartfelt and personal thank you to Geoff for his presentation.

Welcome to PROBUS A new sign, actually four signs, are being added to the roster of
service clubs and organizations based in Hanover. Located at the four entrances to the
town, these signs announce to visitors and citizens the various organizations available.
President Lorna Eadie-Hocking is seen here holding the new sign, approved by the town
of Hanover and paid for by Hanover Area PROBUS Club. The town will bear the cost of
installing the signs. Are we proud or what?
Lynda Taylor-Basilij and Pat Butler are seen partaking of the generous pot-luck luncheon
held in April in the hall of the Hope Community Church. As usual, the Pot Luck group
was well attended, thus warranting the spacious venue for their lunch.
Linda Vallie and Linda McCulloch’s plates look nearly empty. Perhaps they are
saving space for the dessert table? WOW! Who’s counting calories? Not me.
Craft Group Happenings
Seven PROBUS group members gathered at Rose Côté’s home the afternoon of April 3rd and two others the afternoon of April 17th to create three pieces of jewelry using can tabs. After working diligently for over three hours each went home with their new accessories.
