SucceSS all over the World!

Since decades, the Hanoverian horses are considered one of the most successful competitors worldwide for dressage, jumping and eventing. In many coun-tries, riders with their Hanoverians successfully parti-cipate in horse shows weekend after weekend. As loyal companions, Hanoverians bring true joy to many recreational riders. It therefore comes to no surprise that the competition successes lead to a great interest in breeding Hanoverian horses. The worldwide web of Hanoverian breeders reaches from Mallorca to Finland, from South Africa to Russia, from Australia, over New Zealand, to the United Sta-tes and Canada. In many countries, Hanoverian or-ganizations have been founded. They attend to the needs of their respective breeders. The Hannoveraner Verband e. V. in Verden developed uniform guideli-nes, to which all Hanoverian organizations worldwi-de adhere. The reason for this booklet is to clarify these guidelines.

We welcome you to the worldwide family of hanoverian breeders!

Russia: On the breeding farm Elitar near Moscow, a successful Hanoverian breeding program is in place.

Italy: In Italy Hanoverians are bred since a long time. On the annual tours Hanoverians are shown and ins-pected by employees of the Hannoveraner Verband.

State stud stallion Stakkato by Spartan/Pygmalion was the undisputed Champion of five-year-old show-jumpers at the Bundeschampionat 1998, ridden by Eva Bitter. Numerous offspring compete on international level, proving his prepoten-cy. Stakkato’s own performance record is impressive. The picture shows Stakkato at the age of 17 becoming German Champion in show-jumping.

BreedIng StatIonS of the State Stud from loWer Saxony – celle

The State Lower Saxony manages a large stallion lot in Celle, completely independently from the breed association. With about 130 state stud sires, it is a guarantee for successful cooperation with Hannoveraner Verband e. V. and with the Hanoverian horse. The Lower-Saxonian State Stud Celle works with the transfer of fresh semen during the breeding season from February until July for almost twenty years. The main mission of the state stud is to offer semen of valuable sires to the breeders at appropriate breeding fees. Furthermore, every fall, the state stud sires are presented in Celle’s stallion parades. These impressive exhibitions are rich in tradition. On major events worldwide, Celle’s stallion exhibi-tions also delight many horse enthusiasts. At the beginning of the breeding season, the stallions are being shown on eleven stallion presentations throughout the breeding area. Valuable producers for dressage as well as jumping are available to the breeders.

The stallion performance testing station in Adel-heidsdorf is part of the state stud, where state-owned stallions are being trained and tested over the duration of eleven months. The testing station also conducts the required 70-day test.

The central insemination station is located in Celle, where frozen semen is also available and mailed to many countries worldwide. ([email protected]).

In the beginning of the nineteenth century Tho-roughbred and English Halfbred sires were increasin-gly used to refine the “Hannoverschen Pferde” (as the Hanoverian horses were called then). After 1870, the breed was consolidated taking the native lines into consideration. Military and pulling suitability of the Hanoverian horse took precedence in the att-empts to consolidate. The Hanoverian Studbook founded in 1888 was set up during this period. The Hanoverian Studbook is the predecessor of today’s Hannoveraner Verband e. V.

We find the beginnings of organized horse breeding in Lower Saxony back in the sixteenth century. Agri-cultural and military demands determined the horse breeding goals during that time. The foundation of the State Stud Celle in 1735 greatly influenced the beginnings of an organized breeding program, since it introduced central registration procedures for breeding and foaling.

Mares in front of a reaper-binder.

The roots of the Hanoverian breed are found on the breeding farms in Lower Saxony. Mares and foals at the farm Ehlers in Esch near Freiburg/Elbe.

In 1922, breeders joined forces, and the Association of Hanoverian Warmblood Breeders was started. The foundation of the association created the prerequisi-te for a centrally organized, uniform revision and evaluation of all breed procedures. In the year 2007, the name was changed to “Hannoveraner Verband e.V.”.

After World War II, the Hanoverian breed shifted to breeding a riding horse only.

Especially through the introduction of Trakehners and Thoroughbreds to the breed, the Hanoverian horse became more refined and developed into, what it is today: A rideable, noble, correct warmb-lood horse with large lines, appreciated as a partner in competition and recreation riding worldwide.

Until 2005, the Hanoverian horse was mainly bred in Lower Saxony and in Hamburg/Schleswig Holstein. In 2005, Hannoveraner Verband e. V. joined forces with the Association of Hessian Horse Breeders. In 2007, a national recognition for all Germany took place and the international expansion was continu-ed. While keeping the focal point of the breed in Lo-wer Saxony, the activities of the association have been extended all over Germany and, internationally, all over those countries, where a suitable breed base is in existence.

Today the Hanoverian horse is one of the most im-portant sport horse breeds in the world. With about 19,000 registered broodmares and 540 stallions, Hanover takes a leading position in the breeding of horses worldwide, influences many other warmblood breeds considerably, and is recognized as one of the original horse breeding areas.

(1) The Hanoverian horse is bred as a race, which is especially suitable for horseback riding. We strive to breed horses, which are suitable for a performance career or for recreation use because of their inner attributes, rideability, their conformation, their mo-vement, their jumping ability and their health.

(2) Based on the above, we strive to breed horses with an emphasized predisposition for dressage, jumping, or eventing.

(3) With the attributes listed under (1), we also strive to breed horses for the sport of driving.

Especially as competitors, horses with a Hanoverian brand create quite a stir in the competition arenas worldwide. Hanoverian Olympic winners, World- and European champions in the sport of dressage, jumping and eventing are the best ambassadors for quality and performance ability. In the area of recreational riding, Hanoverian horses consistently gain in popularity. Versatile serviceability distingu-ishes the Hanoverian breed. Verden’s auctions are the breed’s showcase.

In 1993, the Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program was born. The focus for a selected group of Hanove-rian breeding stock will be to produce above average jumpers. This program is designed for mares with a jumper pedigree, and either with above average per-formances in competition, or a score of 8,0 or better for jumping ability in the mare performance test. For a mare to be accepted because of competition per-formances, she must have placed at least five times in jumper classes at the M-level (1.30 m classes). Successful descendants must have a success record at the S-level (1.40 m classes) or an international success record.

The stallion inventory for the program includes sires with an above average performance record, and sires, whose descendants have above average per-formance records.

Every year, Hannoveraner Verband e. V. will automati-cally inform owners of those mares, which have been selected for the program. Their breeding certificate will read “Programm Hannoveraner Springpferde-zucht” (Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program). A jumper horse logo is stamped on the horse’s passport and it’s ownership certificate under the pedigree in-formation.

On foal shows for participants of the Hanoverian Jumper Breeding Program, the youngest have their first public debut. The regional clubs organize regio-nal foal shows.

On the occasion of the Herwart-von-der-Decken-Schau the best three-year-old mares of Hannoveraner Verband are presented. One highlight is the outdoor free-jumping. This Verband’s mare show is traditio-nally the prelude to the International Dressage- and Show-Jumping Festival on the grounds of the Nieder-sachsenhalle in August.

Every year in spring the best three- and four-year-olds descending from the Hanoverian Jumper Bree-ding Program compete in a free-jumping competition at Verden. Top-class judges comment on the perfor-mance of each horse. The competition is a showcase for these youngsters but also for the state-of-the-art in breeding show-jumpers in Hannover.

guIdelIneS for BreedIng

In jumping horse breeding only jumping lines and refining stallions should be used. In dressage horse breeding suitable jumping lines and refining stallions should be used in addition to dressage lines.

QualIty

The evaluation of the back construction is of special importance in the breeding of sport horses for all disciplines. Therefore we strive to improve the way of movement and the carrying power by selecting horses which move with impulsion from the hindleg and with a supple but powerful back. The demand on the quality of the hooves and the foundation will also again be increased.

Hannoveraner Verband e. V. has formulated guideli-nes for planning and realizing strategic goals. These guidelines describe the course of a decision process and, at the same time, they serve as a foundation for a discussion on how to realize definite measures. In a consistent effort to improve the breeding of ri-ding horses in accordance with the breeding goal, a dynamic process is being pushed ahead which brings about changes.

The breeding book committee of Hannoveraner Ver-band e. V. formulated three guidelines. The guidelines are in agreement with the breeding goal in the by-laws. They each represent a view on a part of the breeding goal.

emPhaSIZed PredISPoSItIon

Sport horse breeding requires to focus on one pre-disposition for either dressage, jumping or eventing. In the selection all the complexes of traits must be assessed.

Guideline Quality e.g. De Niro.

Guideline Identity e.g. Grey Top.

Guideline focusing on one special predisposi-tion e.g. Lissaro v.d. Helle.

IdentIty

Hannoveraner Verband e. V. has the goal to lastingly stabilize the valuable genetic foundation of the Ha-noverian breed. Proven and newly created Hanoveri-an performance lines shall be promoted.

Dam and sire are entered into the studbooks of breed associa-tions, whose breeding program is accepted by Hannoveraner Verband e. V.Hannoveraner Verband e. V.must approve of the registrati-on system of the breed associa-tion, which issued the registra-tion papers. The brand of a horse is there-fore not relevant for the evalu-ation of the pedigree, but the genetic aspect. For instance, a mare with a Bavarian registra-tion paper fulfills the require-ments, when her descendants belong to a population, which Hannoveraner Verband e. V. ac-cepts, like Hanoverian, Trakeh-ner or English Thoroughbred. If you decide to present a non-Hanoverian mare for ac-ceptance into one of the Ha-noverian breeding books, it is generally advisable to ask the studbook division in Verden to check the mare’s pedigree.

All mares and stallions, which are used in the Hano-verian breed, must be registered in the appropriate division of the Hanoverian mare or stallion books. All the data concerning the horse (i.e. pedigree, co-lor, sex, date of birth, inspection scores, performance test, coverings) are listed in the studbook. Broodma-res as well as breeding stallions have to pass several selection processes, which in part are prerequisites for the approval.

the StudBook IS dIvIded Into 3 PartS:

1. Main studbook (symbol H)2. Studbook (symbol S)3. Pre-studbook (symbol V).The studbook is closed. The majority of breed issues – especially outside Germany’s borders – deal with the main- and the studbook. To accept a mare into one of the mare book divisions, her pedigree, the conformation and the basic gaits must meet certain criteria.

to Be accePted Into the maIn StudBook

a. The mare’s pedigree must include four recognized generations, which means that her sire as well as the sires of the dam, the granddam and the great granddam on the damside are registered either in the studbook of Hannoveraner Verband e. V. or in one of the recognized breed populations. The dam of the mare must be registered in the main- or in the studbook, and

b. Hanoverian and Hessian mares must have obtai-ned at least a score of 6,0 at their studbook ins-pection . The score of traits, which are relevant for the acceptance, cannot be below 5,0. For mares of all other breeds/populations, the requirements in the final score increase to 7,0. In addition Thoroughbred, Anglo Arab and Arab mares need a performance test or a performance record.

to Be accePted Into the StudBook

a. The pedigree of the mare must include three reco-gnized generations. The dam may either be a main-, a studbook or a pre-studbook mare.

b. Hanoverian and Hessian mares must receive an overall score of at least 5,0. All sub criteria must receive a score of at least 4,0.

c. Non-Hanoverian warmblood mares with an accep-ted pedigree must have an overall score of 7,0 and no subscore below 5. In Russia and countries out-side of Europe, however, Non-Hanoverian warmb-lood mares are only accepted if they meet the re-quirements for main studbook.

d. Thoroughbred, Anglo Arab and Arab mares without a performance test are accepted with a final score of 7,0.

mare InSPectIon

A foal can only be registered, if its dam was accepted in one of the studbooks at the latest during the year, the foal was born. To be accepted, the mare must be presented for evaluation at one of the designated in-spection sites. The evaluation takes place in a stand-still, the trot and the walk. An advantageous turnout of the mare, i.e. good feed condition, braiding of the mane, is in the breeder’s own interest. It is recom-mended to practice the in-hand presentation at home.

Three-year old and older mares are allowed to be pre-sented for inspection. There is no upper age limitati-on.

mareS’ name

At the mare inspection, the mare will receive her of-ficial name. Before the inspection, no names are re-gistered. The name preference should be noted on the application. The name must begin with the first letter of the sire’s name, and cannot be changed at a later date. The names of mares, which were registered with other breed associations, will transfer.

dateS and SIteS

The dates for mare inspections in the individual states are published in the member’s magazine DER HAN-NOVERANER (The Hanoverian) as well as on the In-ternet under www.hannoveraner.com.

feeS

Hannoveraner Verband e. V. will inform the breeder about the fees prior to the inspection. The fee schedu-le is published on www.hannoveraner.com. In additi-on to these fees as decided by the annual meeting an additional fee might be charged to cover travel ex-penses. Payment is due at the site in cash preferably, or by check or credit card. Important: The horse’s passport has to be submitted at the mare inspection. Without a passport, a mare cannot be inspected.

the mare Performance teSt

Mare performance tests occupy an important position in the Hanoverian breed. It not only offers informati-on about the suitability of a mare as a sport horse, but also holds valuable information about the quality of inheritable traits of the dam’s sire. Three year old and older mares are eligible, if they are registered in the association’s studbook, or, in the event that they are not registered yet, if they are eli-gible for entry into the main studbook according to

their pedigree. The participation is recorded in the mare’s pass-port. A one-time repetition of the test is possible. The individual criteria are graded in half scores from 0 (=not shown) to 10 (excellent). The in-dividual scores as well as the average-scores for basic gaits, ri-deability and jumping are recor-ded on the final certificate. The mare performance test will take place either as a one-day test (a so-called ‘Feldtest’) or as a station test. In the one-day test, the mares are tested in one day at a designated site.In a station test, which only the Hanoverian Riding and Driving School in Verden organize, the mares are prepared over a period of 25 days at these sites for the final test. In addition to the evaluation of riding qualities, interior attributes like temperament, charac-ter and performance willingness are being conside-red.

The conformation of the mares is evaluated while the mare stands, the trot is judged on the triangle. On the following walk-ring, the mares are compared with each other and divided into two premium groups (Ia- or I prize). The mares do not receive scores. Only Ia - mares are being ranked. At the end, the mares are commented on. The best mares of the individual classes will compete for the title “Champion Mare of the Show”. These show re-sults are recorded with the association, but not in the passport. On larger shows, special classes for Half-bred or jumper mares may be offered.

the State PremIum aWard

The state premium is a promotional measure from the Lower Saxonian government with the goal to keep exceptional mares in the breeding program. Outside the borders of Germany, the title elite is bestowed. The requirements for “elite” status are the same as for “state premium”. Three- and four-year old mares are eligible for the state premium award. During the year, in which they receive the award, state premium candidates must fulfill the following requirements, to which the mare owners must attest:1. A Ia-prize on a mare show within the association’s

region.2. Successfully complete a mare performance test,

namely with established requirements. For mares with a predisposition for dressage or jumping, dif-ferent minimum requirements in the appropriate sub-categories apply. More in-depth information may be obtained at the association’s office.

3. A veterinary certificate must be provided, which confirms that the mare is not a roarer.

The “state premium” award is granted, once the mare delivered a life-foal. Until that time, mares are “state premium candidates”. In Germany, the breeder can choose to enter into a so-called breeding obligation. If he does, it binds him to keeping the young mare in a breeding program for a certain time. As an incentive, the breeder receives a financial reward.

The second possibility grants the continuation of the “state premium candidate” status without having to enter the mare into a breeding program immediately. The state premium candidate turns into a state pre-mium mare, as soon as the first foal by a stallion re-gistered in the Stallion Book I is born. There is no time limitation for the birth of the foal.

the Performance mare

The title “Performance Mare” is awarded in addition to the state premium award. It distinguishes main studbook mares, which produced above average per-formances in the show ring and afterwards were placed back into the breeding program. The following titles are awarded: performance mare - dressage, - jumping, - eventing and – driving. To earn the title, the mare must have placed in first to third position at least five times in dressage or in jum-ping at the M/A-level or higher. In eventing, the mare must have placed at the M-level at least once in first to fifth position and have two additional placings. The title is awarded upon a written application of the mare owner, once a life-foal is registered with Hanno-

According to the discipline, in which the mare was successful, the letter “D” for dressage is added to the title, the letter “S” for jumping, “V” for eventing, and “F” for driving. Just like the state pre-mium award, Hannoveraner Verband e. V. records the performance award in the horse’s passport. It beco-mes a component of the name.

the Breed value eStImatIon

All performances and evaluations of a horse from competitions, mare inspection, mare performance test, stallion performance test and auction selections, are valuable basic information for the breed value estimation. These data are fed into a complicated computer program, which computes breed values for the respective sires. Environmental influences, as far as they can be grasped, and performances of relatives will also be taken into consideration. These breed va-lues are a tool for the breeder, when he selects a breeding stallion, however, they cannot be the sole foundation for his decision. The breed values are pu-blished annually in the Hannoveraner Jahrbuch Hengste, which is obtainable at the central office of the association.

entry Into the StallIon Book

After the licensing and the performance test, a stalli-on may be entered into the stallion book I. A stallion is not automatically entered though. The stallion ow-ner must apply for it in writing and pay the applicable dues. This application must be submitted to Hannove-raner Verband e. V. by mid November for the following breeding season. It needs to be renewed annually. It is the responsibility of the stallion owner to know that he needs to reapply annually. All active stallions, which are entered into the stallion book I of the asso-ciation, are published in our association’s magazine DER HANNOVERANER and on the Internet.

the BIrth of the foal

In the beginning of the year, Hannoveraner Verband e. V. will send out the foaling certificates, which were generated upon the information of the stallion ma-nagers, to the owners of the registered, covered ma-res, as well as an envelope for a hair sample of the foal, which is required for pedigree verification. In the event that the dam has not been DNA-tested, the mare owner receives a second envelope for the dam’s pedigree verification.A delegate of the association records the birth of the foal and all pertinent information on the foal on the foaling certificate, which constitutes the foundation for issuing the horse’s passport. When a live foal is born, the birth must be reported as soon as possible to the office of the association so that the foal’s registration can be initiated. This is especially important, when a Hanoverian foal is born outside Germany’s borders and travel arrangements will have to be made. A birth may be announced by

phone or in writing, but not with the foaling certificate. In the event the mare is not in foal, she lost the foal, or the foal dies before regist-ration, this information also needs to be recorded on the foaling certificate. If the foal dies, the birth date and the sex of the foal must be recorded. At the registration site, the breeder hands over the fo-aling certificate to the au-thorized delegate of the

association, who will register the foal, i.e. he records the date of birth, color, sex, and markings and com-pletes the diagram for the horse passport. In additi-on, he collects the envelope with the hair samples, which will be used for the DNA-analysis to verify the pedigree. Afterwards the foal receives the foal brand with a two-digit registration number on its left hip.

and then hand it over to the stallion manager, before the mare is covered for the first time. New breeders receive blank forms on the breeding station. At the end of the breeding season, the breeder/mare owner receives a confirmation from the stallion manager about the covering, which is either recorded on the pre-printed breeding/insemination certificate or on a breeding/insemination receipt. This document is to be saved. The stallion manager reports all coverings to the as-sociation until latest September 30th of each year. Upon this information, a foaling certificate will be generated.

In the event that frozen semen was used to insemi-nate the mare, there often is no direct contact bet-ween the mare owner and the stallion manager. In these cases, the veterinarian, who inseminates the mare, signs the breeding certificate and the breeder sends it to Hannoveraner Verband e. V. during the year of insemination.

The stallion directory of Hannoveraner Verband e. V., which is published in DER HANNOVERANER and on the Internet, includes all current, approved stallions in good standings. Only stallions, which are entered into the Stallion Book I of Hannoveraner Verband e. V., may be used for the Hanoverian breed. After having selected a well-suited sire, the breeder directs his communications towards the stallion ow-ner or the manager of the respective official bree-ding station. Additional information about the avai-lability of the stallions can be obtained from the Hanoverian magazine DER HANNOVERANER.

the BreedIng certIfIcate

In the beginning of each year, every Hanoverian breeder – upon payment of the annual dues – recei-ves by mail a breeding/insemination certificate, which lists the mare’s pertinent data. This computer-generated certificate is compatible with modern technique. The mare owner must sign this certificate

With processing the foaling certificate, each horse obtains a twelve-digit reference number, which is valid for life, the so-called life-number. This reference number is issued only once to one individual horse. It consists of the following components:

Verden’s auction program is in existence since 1949. Since 1972, the auctions take place in the Nieder-sachsenhalle. In the beginning, they took place twice a year as elite auctions only.

The continuous expansion of the system took place through introducing additional riding horse auctions, since 1985 in July and January, and since 1994 in May and November.

As of 1975, an extensive number of foals are offered for sale in August. Since 1994 the elite auctions in April and October were complemented with early and late born foals. As of 2004, the May auction was also expanded in this direction. Broodmares are part of the

Since 2009 riding horses have also been sold at the “Alsfelder Advent“ auction at the end of November at the horse center Alsfeld.

The careful selection of the horses, the competence and seriousness with respect to the offered advice and the professionalism during the entire settlement are Verden’s much-appreciated standards worldwide. “Newcomers” just as experienced horse enthusiasts receive all requested information. Hanoverian breeders do not only talk about the im-portance of considering riding qualities when deci-ding to breed a mare. Rideability, character and tem-perament are core values when choosing mares and stallions. These features are also of tremendous influ-ence at the stallion performance test (70-day-test) as these partial scores make up more than 50 percent of the final score.

Mares are also consequently chosen according to their riding qualities. Year by year, approx. 1,200 young mares are presented under the rider at mare performance tests before they start their breeding career. Apart from judging basic gaits and jumper abi-lities, greatest importance is attached to excellent ri-deability.

Breeding area and Breeders

The Lower Saxonian farms are regarded as the cradle of the Hanoverian breed. They are surrounded by vast grasslands and offer perfect conditions for horses to grow up. Before tractors conquered agriculture, ma-res were not only used for breeding purposes, they also had to earn their living with hard work on the

„Enjoy Hanoverians“ is the motto, meant to empha-size that Hanoverian horses are also a perfect partner for pleasure riding. Hanoverian breeding and training farms that offer horses and/or different services espe-cially for pleasure riders form the basis of this pro-gram.

fields. And they frequently participated at smaller competitions at the weekends.

Mares that refused to work or with a bad character were of no use. This is how the modern Hanoverian horse developed: It has been shaped by the close contact with humans over generations. It has an ho-nest character, willingly works and matches different requirements and disciplines. Due to these favourable inner qualities, the Hanoverian horse is very popular all over the world today. And it is a popular breed for trekking and endurance riding, for hunting, conventi-onal competitions and for the different riding styles.

Suitable for outdoor boarding

Hanoverian horses are as suitable for outdoor raising as many other horse breeds. It is a common practice in the Hanoverian breeding area that foals and mares leave their stables in spring to spend the following months outside until they are stabled again and wea-ned in autumn. Yearlings and two-year olds are fre-quently grown up in herds on huge pastures, so that they have no problems to spend the winter months in big stalls in herds, too.
