HANNAH BRENCHER…

Is a 24 year old who is in the habit of leaving love letters, all around New York City. Oh and she runs The World NeedsMore Love Letters, a global love letter writing organization.

LOVE LETTERS TO STRANGERS…..Opened with a story about Hannah being the only student at her college who still checked her mail box for letters from her mother, who didn’t believe in technology.

She would blog about each and every letterthat she wrote and left for someone to find. As her stack of letters grew and grew, she made a promise, “I posed a kind of crazy promise to the internet: that if you asked me for a hand written letter, I would write you one, no questions asked.”

Over night e-mails attacked her inbox, people asking her to “give them a reason to wait by the mailbox.” Thus, she created The World Needs More Love Letters. “Connecting strangers to strangers by way of letter writing.” She uses the power of social media to send love letters to strangers that need them most.

Hannah explains how people are using the power of letters around the world, from a women leaving letters around her house for her husband that just got back from Afghanistan to a girl who left letters all around her school campus, only to wake up to thousands more of them hanging from the trees and in bushes.

“Letter writing is an art form now. The signing, the scripting, the mailing, the doodles in the margins. The mere fact, that somebody would just sit down, pull out a piece of paper, and think about someone the whole way through with an intention that is so much harder to un-earth when the browser is up and the iPhone is pinging. That is an art form.”

Hannah captures the audience’s attention by tugging on their heart strings with stories of people who received/requested her love letters and they changed their lives for the better. One of the stories she tells is about a man that was going to take his own life, and was saying good bye to the world via Facebook. Hannah and her organization sent him love letters and he now sleeps with them under his pillow.

Dynamism: 5/5

Hannah spoke from her heart and with intent. She gives us examples of how love letter writing, even from strangers, can help anyone. You can tell just from listening to her speak that she is very passionate about her cause and truly wants people to write love letters to help others. She loves and understands what she is talking about and makes you really want to stop what you are doing and write random love letters to strangers all over the world.

Hannah uses no slide or speech cards to get through her presentation, she follows her story. She also uses a prop, her “trusty mail crate.” Both speaking without slides and with a prop are discussed by Garr Reynolds.

From the moment Hannah begins her presentation, I can tell that she is passionate about what she is talking about. She delivers with vigor and emotion every time she talks about her love letters. If there is anything I learned from her presentation, it is to make sure that I love what I’m presenting about. It really makes people want to listen and love whatever it is you’re talking about as much as you do.

Compare and Contrast:

While Hannah and Sir Ken Robinson both show no slide presentation, Sir Ken uses amore comedic story-telling aspect to keep his audience entertained. Hannah, I believe, uses examples of what her organization can do and has done to reach her audience.

Both Sir Ken Robinson and Hannah talked about subjects that affect people and their futures. They are both very invigorated about their subjects, as well as very knowledgeable.

TIPS: Love what you are talking about. You won’t need to stutter or memorize, because it will becoming from the heart. Talk about something that has affected or changed you personally so that you can express to your audience just how important what you are talking about is, just like Hannah and her love letters!
