HANDS OF PRAISE Sunday, March 28, 2021 – Palm Sunday

Service Order: Service of the Word, Christian Worship, page 38

A warm welcome to those visiting us this morning. Here at St. Paul we preach Christ crucified, whose suffering and death paid for our sins and earned for us the gift of everlasting life. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak with Pastor Goetzinger or Pastor Thompson. We pray that you return to worship with us again.

INFORMATION Restrooms Speak with an usher for the location. Hearing assistance devices are available. Speak with an usher.

FOR PARENTS Changing table is located in the washroom next to the downstairs kitchen. Quiet space for children behind the glass walls at the entryway of church.

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE CHURCH silence for meditation.

Dear Jesus, today I see you riding into Jerusalem, being treated like a king, but like no other king in history. You came humble, to serve me, to die for me. And now risen, you are exalted as the highest of Kings. Remind me you still rule today, and that my future is sure and certain in your care as my king. Amen.

OPENING HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honour ————————————————————————————————

sung by soloist, found in Christian Worship 131:1,3

1 All glory, laud, and honour To you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. You are the King of Israel And David’s royal Son, Now in the Lord’s name coming, Our King and blessed one. 3 All glory, laud, and honour To you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. The people of the Hebrews With palms before you went; Our praise and prayer and anthems Before you we present.

INVOCATION, CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION ———————————————————————————————— Stand. M: In the name of the Father and of the Son ✙ and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. (Soloist) We have come into God’s presence;

Maker of the heavens and earth. He created us to love him; To serve him as his precious child. We have disobeyed and errored, Thus deserving wrath and anger.

(spoken) We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: (spoken) Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Saviour, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you the strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

2

The pastor absolves us of our sins, that is, reminds us we’re forgiven because of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

We always begin our worship in the name of our Triune God: the Father who created us, the Son who redeemed us, and the Spirit who lives in us.

To confess is to admit we’re far from perfect and so, without Jesus, shouldn’t be with a perfect God.

(Soloist) Lord, on you we cast our burdens; Sink them in the depths below! Let us know your gracious pardon; Wash us, make us white as snow. Let your Spirit leave us never; Make us only yours forever.

PRAYER OF THE DAY ———————————————————————————————— M: Let us pray: We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you

redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen. Be seated. FIRST LESSON Zechariah 9:9-10 ———————————————————————————————— Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your

king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth.

PSALM 24 ————————————————————————————————

Spoken responsively M: The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, C: the world, and all who live in it; M: for he founded it upon the seas C: and established it upon the waters. M: Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? C: Who may stand in his holy place? M: He who has clean hands and a pure heart, C: he will receive blessing from God his Saviour. M: Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors,

3

We believe that the Bible is the source of all spiritual truth, and so we read lessons from it to learn who God is and what he’s done for us throughout history and still today.

Psalms are songs written thousands of years ago. We still worship with them today.

C: that the King of glory may come in. M: Who is this King of glory? C: The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. M: Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, C: that the King of glory may come in. M: Who is he, this King of glory? C: The LORD Almighty—he is the King of glory. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was

in the beginning, is now, and will be forever, Amen.

SECOND LESSON Philippians 2:5-11 ———————————————————————————————— In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ

Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God

something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!

Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

VERSE OF THE DAY John 12:23 cf. NIV ———————————————————————————————— M: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Stand. GOSPEL Mark 11:1-10 ———————————————————————————————— As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany at

the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’ ”

They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing,

4

Gospel means “Good News,” and so this is a reading from the historical biographies of Jesus that tells us the good news of how Jesus came into this world to save us.

untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” Be seated. HYMN OF THE DAY Ride On, Ride On in Majesty ————————————————————————————————

sung by soloist, found in Christian Worship 133:1,2,5

1 Ride on, ride on in majesty! Hark! All the tribes hosanna cry. O Saviour meek, pursue your road, With palms and scattered garments strowed. 2 Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die. O Christ, your triumphs now begin O’er captive death and conquered sin. 5 Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die. Bow your meek head to mortal pain, Then take, O Christ, your power and reign. SERMON Zechariah 9:9-10 ————————————————————————————————

The Day King Jesus Went to War

5

The Hymn of the Day is meant to especially celebrate today’s unique theme.

A sermon is simply a longer reflection on one of today’s readings from the Bible.

APOSTLES’ CREED ———————————————————————————————— Stand. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERING ———————————————————————————————— To give electronically, visit StPaulOttawa.org and click on GIVE in the top menu. To give physically, either drop in the basket in the centre aisle, back of church, after the service, or mail to our church address: 208 Wilbrod Street, Ottawa K1N 6L5

6

The Apostle’s Creed is a summary of the Christian faith based on statements of faith from the 100s. It is a summary of the facts our assurance of forgiveness is based on.

Christians give offerings as a form of worship, to show God our thanks and dependence on him, and to support our work within the community and world.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH ———————————————————————————————— Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We praise you, Father, that you have sent your Son not in wrath but in

mercy. As we enter this most holy week and ponder together the mysteries of your great salvation, show to us the answer to your people’s prayers of “Hosanna,” “save now,” in the Passion, death and resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Uphold this world in your order. Preserve the Church and the preaching of your Word against all enemies. Bless our homes, that parents and children may serve one another faithfully and grow in instruction and faith until life’s end. Give health and wisdom to all who serve in public office, that their authority may be exercised for the benefit of our people. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

We bring before you the sick, distressed and needy. Give your abiding comfort in every circumstance, that in Christ we shall not die but live, and declare his works. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Look with favour on all communicants at your table. Grant that they would come penitently and in faith to eat your Son’s true body and drink his blood for the forgiveness of sins. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Lord God, heavenly Father, we here remember the sufferings and death of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, for our salvation. Praising his victorious resurrection from the dead, we draw strength from his ascension before you, where he ever stands for us as our own High Priest. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in his kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers, deliver and preserve us, for to you alone we give all glory, honour and worship, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER ———————————————————————————————— C: Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins,

7

as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

The Prayer of the Church is our biggest prayer of the day, focusing on our day’s theme and asking God to care for us, our community, and the world.

Two-thousand years ago, Jesus taught his disciples to pray with these words. We use them still today, able to call God our Father because of Jesus.

THE SACRAMENT ———————————————————————————————— M: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. M: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. M: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give

you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who brought the gift of salvation to all people by his death on the tree of the cross, so that the devil, who overcame us by a tree would in turn by a tree be overcome. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

C: Holy, holy, holy Lord God of heavenly hosts: heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Directions for Communion In the Bible, God gives us instructions for communion. He says, “Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink of the cup” and that, if you don’t fully understand what communion is, you “drink judgment’ on yourself (1 Cor 11:28,29) In order to receive communion today, we ask that worshipers be able to check all of the following boxes:

I repent of all my sins, holding nothing back from God. (1 John 1:9) I believe that Jesus took away my sins when he died for me on the cross. (John 3:16, 1 John 3:5) I believe that in Communion I receive Jesus’ true body and blood along with the bread and the wine. (Mt 26:26-27, 1Co 10:16) I agree with all the teachings of this church family, as I have learned to know them through their Foundations Class.

Lutherans use the world sacraments for acts that Jesus commanded us to do for the forgiveness of sins, combining words of forgiveness with physical elements, like bread and wine.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION & AGNUS DEI ———————————————————————————————— M: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when

he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my ✙ body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my ✙ blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;

have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; have mercy on us. O Christ, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world; Grant us your peace. Amen.

DISTRIBUTION ———————————————————————————————— Communicant members physically present, while remaining in their pews, are invited to take the sacrament at the direction of the pastor.

BLESSING & SONG OF SIMEON ———————————————————————————————— M: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ will strengthen and preserve

you in the true faith into life everlasting. Go in peace: Your sins are forgiven.

C: Amen. Short moment of silence for personal prayer. C: Lord, you now let your servant depart in peace, according to your

word. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.

M: O Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. C: And his mercy endures forever.

9

See Matthew 26:26-29 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 in the Bible.

The ancient Agnus Dei reminds us that Jesus was, like lambs in ancient times, a sacrifice given for our sins.

CLOSING PRAYER AND BLESSING ———————————————————————————————— M: O God the Father, source of all goodness, in your loving kindness you sent

your Son to share our humanity. We thank you that through him you have given us pardon and peace in this sacrament. We also pray that you will not forsake us but will rule our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit so that we willingly serve you day after day, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen. M: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favour and ✙ give you peace.

C: Amen. Be seated.

CLOSING HYMN All Glory, Laud and Honour ————————————————————————————————

sung by soloist, found in Christian Worship 131:4,5

4 All glory, laud, and honour To you, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring. This is a 6-week course led by Pastor Thompson and his wife, Christine. Parents will join together to build, re-model, and grow their home with Christ as its foundation. Addressing everything from parenting philosophies to healthy marriages, gospel-motivated habits and discipline to calming techniques in the midst of chronic stress, this workshop aims to provide families with the tools and resources necessary to weather life’s storms with a firm foundation and plenty of skills to grow on. We will be meeting virtually over Zoom on Wednesday evenings (8:00-9:15pm), starting Wednesday, April 14 (through May 19). To sign up or for more details, contact our Youth and Family Coordinator Christine Thompson ([email protected]).

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS! The Board of Outreach is considering all of our options for activities for the rest of the year, and they all depend heavily upon our volunteers. We would like to gauge the willingness of people to help out at activities like our Art Camp (tentatively planned for August 11-13), and other events. We are not asking for people to commit to any particular event at this time. Please let Carl Kiiffner ([email protected]) know if you would consider acting as a volunteer in 2021.
