DESCRIPTION

Handrails and balustrades are considered as specialised sections of carpentry. These two components are required when stairs are not surrounded by a wall and are more than 1 metre above the surface below. The installation of quality handrail and balustrade systems will enhance the appearance and safety of the property. A well-designed system will influence the way in which the property is perceived. It will also determine how accessible a certain facility is and will directly influence the safety of anyone in the building.

Handrails

Handrails are important as they provide support and protect anyone climbing up or going down the stairs from falling. They are usually attached to both sides of a staircase with the goal of providing uninterrupted support for the disabled. Handrails also provide comfort for the visually impaired by acting as a guide.

For the handrail to efficient, they must be suitable for use by physically weak people. The most common shape of the handrail is circular, which is extremely helpful for elderly with poor grip.

Balustrade Systems

Balustrades refer to the barrier supporting the handrail. It is usually required on the open side of the staircase, which surrounds an open balcony or atrium. Engineered and high finish, quality balustrade systems are made of durable materials like steel or glass.

Structural toughened glass is one of the best materials for balustrades, as it is suited for areas where children are present. It is also perfect for high-end applications where free open aesthetics is necessary. Stainless steel balustrades are also a food choice, as it provides permanent functioning and high stability.

When adding handrail and balustrades to staircases, it is important to consider quality, durability, and safety. Property owners need to hire the right contractor to ensure that the design and construction comply with standards set by the Building Code of Australia (BCA). The strength and durability of materials, including geometric constraints provided by the BCA should also be part of the project.
