HANDICRAFT IN OUR TERRITORY

Till some time ago, talking about Sicilian handicraft meant referring to a productive sector which outlived its fame to a marginal activity that was practiced by old people and destined for running out with economic difficulties, disappointed by an inexistent market and pressed by technology;

craftsmen themselves believed in their “cleverness”

less and less.

The territory of Bagheria has got an artisanal activity connected with old and new trades. The Ducato family built Sicilian carts. It had a raw form and two wheels; later it changed, improved itself and became a perfect form of transport in the old Sicilian streets called “ trazzere”.

The cart carried the most various things such as building material, minerals, agricultural products. It was neglected and forgotten with the coming of motorization, but it regained importance at the end of the seventies thanks to Renato Guttuso, a Sicilian painter well known all

over the world. Today its value is connected with the popular traditions.

Unfortunately there isn't much participation of young people and

interest in this activity that should be learnt since childhood. it would be

helpful if a lot of young people were ready to follow Ducato family and

learn more about this kind of ancient job.

SELLER-SHOUTING IN THE PAST AND ANCIENT TRADES

By the term “shouting” we mean what ancient sellers shouted in order to sell their own goods, as said in an ancient Sicilian proverb “the seller shouts what he has got”. The importance of shouting is hidden in the traditional forms, in the vivid figurative language, in the expression paying attention.
