Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Thursday, June 25th 2020 Race 1 #2 Enhanced Finance #6 Flat Out Fabulous #5 Don’t Smile Lilah #1 Echo Location #2 ENHANCED FINANCE raced on opening day with a fourth place finish. She was hard-ridden to make the lead, was outfinished by a class-dropper and only lost place in the final 1/16th. She hooks a softer group here. #6 FLAT OUT FABULOUS made a mild run in the stretch two weeks ago on a day where it was very difficult to close into a homestretch headwind. If Enhanced Finance is pressured on the lead, this filly could be the one to pick up the pieces. #5 DON’T SMILE LILAH was a decent third in a $15,000 race topped by two other three year olds with questionable talent. She certainly has a shot but she may take a bit too much money on the class drop, which is realistically probably a lateral move. #1 ECHO LOCATION showed brief speed but quickly emptied out two weeks ago. She may be better with the race into her; her second lifetime start was not awful. Race 2 #3 Simply Mysterious #5 Super Chocolate #1 Clairessence #4 Hello Annie #3 SIMPLY MYSTERIOUS was racing well when sitting just off of the pace last year and catches a group with plenty of speed to follow to her outside. #5 SUPER CHOCOLATE will likely show speed once again as she exits a front stepping win against non-twos two weeks ago. She has yet to run a bad race and has a race into her, while the two other obvious speeds are both coming off of near 16 month layoffs. #1 CLAIRESSENCE closed out 2019 with a pair of closing wins at seven furlongs. As mentioned this race does have potential for a clustered early pace, and she may offer some value at the shorter distance. #4 HELLO ANNIE had two romping front-end wins at Tampa in early 2019 and has not raced since March of that year. Her early starts over this surface were okay but nothing special and she may take a lot of money based on the ease of her two wins. Race 3 #4 Fine Lady #2 Nordic Pearl #6 Cheetahra #5 Real Chopper #4 FINE LADY had the widest post in a five furlong race two weeks ago, breaking outwardly before making a mild rally into a stout headwind in the stretch. She draws better and may not be too far out of it this time as there is very little pace here. #2 NORDIC PEARL exits the same race as Fine Lady. She showed some speed that day before falling back then offering some mild run into that headwind. That was easily the best race she has run to date. #6 CHEETAHRA had quite a few good races in 2019 and will now kick off her 2020 season. An 0-for-27 seven year old is rarely an overly appealing option and she will likely be a short price, especially with the rider change, but she is a very obvious contender. #5 REAL CHOPPER is another exiting the June 11 race topped by Pierian. She has not shown much speed but did manage to pass a couple of tiring ones; lightly raced filly has potential for improvement. Race 4 #5 Purple Scooter #3 Wuk Up Queen #4 Big Mamba #1 Sea Lily #5 PURPLE SCOOTER scored a front-stepping win in a soft group of $25,000 maidens on opening day and is dropped for $15,000 for her first start against winners; likely a wise move. She is quick early but can hopefully sit off of the rapid Sea Lily. #3 WUK UP QUEEN was in very good form in 2019 with clear excuses in her more questionable looking efforts towards the end. She was put away in August; note that she won fresh last year. #4 BIG MAMBA was a grinding third when trying to close into the June 11 headwind. There is potential for a pace meltdown if someone does duel with Sea Lily. #1 SEA LILY was sent for the lead after being outbroke on opening day and tired in midstretch. Blinkers come off for the first time but I still expect her to be a serious pace presence.

Race 1

#2 Enhanced Finance

#6 Flat Out Fabulous

#5 Don’t Smile Lilah

#1 Echo Location

#2 ENHANCED FINANCE raced on opening day with a

fourth place finish. She was hard-ridden to make the lead,

was outfinished by a class-dropper and only lost place in

the final 1/16th. She hooks a softer group here. #6 FLAT

OUT FABULOUS made a mild run in the stretch two

weeks ago on a day where it was very difficult to close

into a homestretch headwind. If Enhanced Finance is

pressured on the lead, this filly could be the one to pick

up the pieces. #5 DON’T SMILE LILAH was a decent

third in a $15,000 race topped by two other three year

olds with questionable talent. She certainly has a shot but

she may take a bit too much money on the class drop,

which is realistically probably a lateral move. #1 ECHO

LOCATION showed brief speed but quickly emptied out

two weeks ago. She may be better with the race into her;

her second lifetime start was not awful.

Race 2

#3 Simply Mysterious

#5 Super Chocolate

#1 Clairessence

#4 Hello Annie

#3 SIMPLY MYSTERIOUS was racing well when sitting

just off of the pace last year and catches a group with

plenty of speed to follow to her outside. #5 SUPER

CHOCOLATE will likely show speed once again as she

exits a front stepping win against non-twos two weeks

ago. She has yet to run a bad race and has a race into

her, while the two other obvious speeds are both coming

off of near 16 month layoffs. #1 CLAIRESSENCE closed

out 2019 with a pair of closing wins at seven furlongs. As

mentioned this race does have potential for a clustered

early pace, and she may offer some value at the shorter

distance. #4 HELLO ANNIE had two romping front-end

wins at Tampa in early 2019 and has not raced since

March of that year. Her early starts over this surface were

okay but nothing special and she may take a lot of money

based on the ease of her two wins.

Race 3

#4 Fine Lady

#2 Nordic Pearl

#6 Cheetahra

#5 Real Chopper

#4 FINE LADY had the widest post in a five furlong race

two weeks ago, breaking outwardly before making a mild

rally into a stout headwind in the stretch. She draws

better and may not be too far out of it this time as there is

very little pace here. #2 NORDIC PEARL exits the same

race as Fine Lady. She showed some speed that day

before falling back then offering some mild run into that

headwind. That was easily the best race she has run to

date. #6 CHEETAHRA had quite a few good races in

2019 and will now kick off her 2020 season. An 0-for-27

seven year old is rarely an overly appealing option and

she will likely be a short price, especially with the rider

change, but she is a very obvious contender. #5 REAL

CHOPPER is another exiting the June 11 race topped by

Pierian. She has not shown much speed but did manage

to pass a couple of tiring ones; lightly raced filly has

potential for improvement.

Race 4

#5 Purple Scooter

#3 Wuk Up Queen

#4 Big Mamba

#1 Sea Lily

#5 PURPLE SCOOTER scored a front-stepping win in a

soft group of $25,000 maidens on opening day and is

dropped for $15,000 for her first start against winners;

likely a wise move. She is quick early but can hopefully sit

off of the rapid Sea Lily. #3 WUK UP QUEEN was in very

good form in 2019 with clear excuses in her more

questionable looking efforts towards the end. She was

put away in August; note that she won fresh last year. #4

BIG MAMBA was a grinding third when trying to close

into the June 11 headwind. There is potential for a pace

meltdown if someone does duel with Sea Lily. #1 SEA

LILY was sent for the lead after being outbroke on

opening day and tired in midstretch. Blinkers come off for

the first time but I still expect her to be a serious pace

presence.

Race 5

#1 Silencium - Best Bet

#2 Act of Bob

#3 True Dat

#5 Northern Crusader

#1 SILENCIUM dueled with a winter-raced horse when

kicking off his 2020 season on June 7, emptying out in

the stretch. Blinkers are added for his turf debut; the

inside should be an advantage with the rail in its widest

setting. #2 ACT OF BOB was absurdly wide in his 2020

debut and came up empty. He showed speed in both of

his juvenile races and will add blinkers for the first time.

#3 TRUE DAT is the most obvious closer in this speed-

filled race although his ability on turf is questionable. He

was in good form at the end of 2019 and figures to have a

shot if there is a duel up front. #5 NORTHERN

CRUSADER disappointed in his delayed 2019 debut

when racing for $25,000 but returned with an easy win

when dropping for $7,500. He is a speed type but doesn’t

always get out of the gate well; if he breaks well and the

rider is savvy he could drop behind the other speed

types.

Race 6

#5 Souper Smart

#4 Clear Destination

#1 Reconfigure

#6 Souper Success

#5 SOUPER SMART seemed to hesitate to split horses

while Reconfigure laid in on him in the stretch on June 6

but finished effectively once Reconfigure backed away.

His two turf races were a runner up finish off of a wide,

dueling trip in his career debut, and an eighth place finish

in the Grade 1 Highlander. #4 CLEAR DESTINATION

was a two-time winner as a juvenile. He tried the Holy

Bull over the winter, a race he was not suited to, but there

is some serious potential for him to develop into a very

nice horse. #1 RECONFIGURE was somewhat flat in his

2020 debut. He should appreciate the return to the turf;

his form over the grass last season was tremendous, and

he draws well for his second start off of the layoff. #6

SOUPER SUCCESS was a game second in front of

Souper Smart and Reconfigure on June 6. His two races

on turf last year were stellar efforts; a very close second

in the Bold Ruckus and an easy win against non-threes

on the inner turf.

Race 7

#5 Pink Lloyd

#2 Dixie’s Gamble

#1 Malibu Secret

#4 Not So Quiet

#5 PINK LLOYD was beaten only once last year, when

being declared a non-starter in the Bold Venture. The

reigning champion sprinter does not need much analysis;

he tends to win and does it easily. #2 DIXIE’S GAMBLE

had a three win season last year including a score in the

Overskate which lacked Pink Lloyd. He chased the

champion around a few times, including a second in the

Shepperton and a troubled fourth in the Kennedy Road.

#1 MALIBU SECRET has been a very successful claim,

winning his first and second level allowances off the bat

then holding third in the Kennedy Road. He figures to be

stalking the pace from the inside. #4 NOT SO QUIET will

likely go to the front and try to last; he was a front-end

winner of a second level allowance on opening day but

has a dangerous Pink monster looming in the gate beside

him.

Race 8

#8 Spring Edition

#1 Buttermilk Pike

#6 Lyrical Note

#4 Maximum Perfection

#2 Now We Are Nine

#8 SPRING EDITION finished midpack in a tough group

of optional $40,000 non-threes two weeks ago, offering a

bit of a rally into the headwind. He should appreciate the

easier company. #1 BUTTERMILK PIKE made an easy

lead and drew off convincingly when beating $7,500 non-

twos on opening day, earning a 90 Beyer in the process.

He will have speed to deal with from Maximum

Perfections and he has to beat better horses than Bexar

this time. #6 LYRICAL NOTE had good form in age-

restricted races early in the season but went off form in

his two final starts. He doesn’t look out of place in his

return off of the layoff. #4 MAXIMUM PERFECTION was

unable to make the lead in a race full of rapid types on

June 7, raced wide and backed away. He should be able

to keep up with Buttermilk Pike in the early stages; if he

manages to outsprint that foe he may have a shot to go

all the way. #2 NOW WE ARE NINE was a couple of

positions ahead of Maximum Perfection on June 7. He

broke from the outside gate and had a wide trip that day;

he will go off of Lasix today.
