Power source can be a stack of alkaline, NiCad batteries, or a Li-ion battery, or even a USB supply. Basically input can be anywhere from 1.8V to 6V.Small power loss is the key as devices need to run for long hours.

ISL9230: iPath Management

• How does it work?• At given current limit, control core continuously monitors the output voltage. Actions are based on three conditions:

– VOUT holds steady, meaning available current is adequate• Deliver needed current to both paths

– VOUT starts to drop, meaning available current is not adequate• Reduce ICHG until VOUT stops dropping

– VOUT continues to drop to below VBAT level, meaning available current is far below demand• The battery starts providing current

to the load instead of charging.
