    Classification of Hand Tools

    Lesson Resources

Tools. Where would we be without tools? From the basic hammer to the mostsophisticated diagnostic instrument, tools are an integral part of any mechanical and

    automotive service procedure.

In this activity you will be asked to view a variety of hand tools and classify them in tothe following categories.

    ? Fastening? Cutting?

    Striking

? HoldingMany of you will have used these tools in your life already, and some of you may have

never seen them. The goal of this activity will be to work together to develop a commonknowledge base.

    FYI

Metal hand tools are typically created by three methods: forging, casting and

machining. Forging is known for creating the strongest tools.

Your first task is to organize yourself in a group of two or three. Your teacher will help in

the selection process and ensure that you have completed this task before you move on.

Second, locate the Hand Tools Classification worksheet found at the back of this activity.Appoint a recorder for your group and ensure that the recorder has this copy of the

    worksheet.

On the next few pages of this activity you will find various pictures of hand tools. Yournext task is to first identify the tools in the pictures by providing their common name.

Second you must categorize these tools as Fastening, Cutting, Striking or Holding tools.

You will find a table on the worksheet that has space provided to name and categorizeeach picture.

To help you out, remember that a tool used for fastening can tighten or loosen something,a cutting tool will cut something, a striking tool will hit something, and a holding tool

    will hold or squeeze something.

How well did your group do? Were you able to name all of the tools and classify them?

Before you continue on to the last task of this assignment, you must unsure that you haveall of the tools named and classified. To complete your list, collaborate with other groups

in your classroom. See if the names you have given the tools are the same as other

groups. If they are not, try to conclude which name is correct.

When your list is checked and complete, continue on with the rest of the activity.

Tools are designed to repair, and service things. Now that you have named and

categorized the tools displayed in this activity, what are they used for?

You may have noticed that there is a third column on the Hand Tools Classificationworksheet that is blank. You will now use this column to identify some uses for the tools

you have identified. To get started, name the column "Tool Uses" in the space providedfor the title.

For each tool you must identify a use that is mechanical in nature. For example, you may

identify a tool that is used to adjust a carburetor on a lawn mower or car. You could alsoidentify a tool that is used to remove the bolts that hold the wheels on a vehicle.

Do not include household uses for tools like tightening screws on a door knob. The uses

that you identify should be mechanical in nature and be performed on items like vehicles, lawn mowers, motorcycles, small engines, gocarts, etc.

Once you have found at least one use for each tool your assignment is complete! Well

    done!
