2013 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT Hamza Ballouk Hamza Ballouk was born in Houston, Texas, and has travelled for a large portion of his young life, living in different places including Syria (his parent’s native country), and Toronto, before finally settling with his family in Corner Brook in 1999. Hamza graduated from Corner Brook Regional High with honors, and was a member of the soccer team, where he helped his school to win a silver medal in provincials. Upon attending Memorial University at Grenfell Campus, Hamza was awarded the Memorial University Entrance Scholarship and the Memorial University Endowment Fund Scholarship. Hamza is currently a student-athlete at Grenfell Campus, playing for the basketball team, while completing a degree in general science. Hamza has made Grenfell’s vice-president’s list in each of his first two years. He has been awarded the Grenfell Campus Scholarship Fund, the Gervase C. Hollander Award in biology and the E.J.F Hodgett Scholarship in science. Hamza has been active in his community, where he has been a member of Steady Brook’s Volunteer Fire Fighting Department and a volunteer at the Corner Brook Long Term Care Home. His volunteer work also includes helping out with Grenfell Campus basketball tournaments and the NL Snowboard Jam. He works for the university as a biology tutor, marking assistant and gym attendant during his school years at Grenfell. He is entering his third year with an overall average of 86.8 per cent and a GPA of 3.9 and hopes to attend medical school upon completion of his undergraduate degree. Hamza Ballouk
