2013 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

Hamza Ballouk

Hamza Ballouk was born in Houston, Texas,and has travelled for a large portion of hisyoung life, living in different places includingSyria (his parent’s native country), andToronto, before finally settling with his familyin Corner Brook in 1999.

Hamza graduated from Corner Brook RegionalHigh with honors, and was a member of thesoccer team, where he helped his school to wina silver medal in provincials.

Upon attending Memorial University at Grenfell Campus, Hamza was awardedthe Memorial University Entrance Scholarship and the Memorial UniversityEndowment Fund Scholarship.

Hamza is currently a student-athlete at Grenfell Campus, playing for thebasketball team, while completing a degree in general science.

Hamza has made Grenfell’s vice-president’s list in each of his first two years. Hehas been awarded the Grenfell Campus Scholarship Fund, the Gervase C.Hollander Award in biology and the E.J.F Hodgett Scholarship in science. Hamza has been active in his community, where he has been a member of SteadyBrook’s Volunteer Fire Fighting Department and a volunteer at the Corner BrookLong Term Care Home. His volunteer work also includes helping out withGrenfell Campus basketball tournaments and the NL Snowboard Jam. He worksfor the university as a biology tutor, marking assistant and gym attendant duringhis school years at Grenfell.

He is entering his third year with an overall average of 86.8 per cent and a GPAof 3.9 and hopes to attend medical school upon completion of his undergraduatedegree.
