Principals Message We have certainly had a cold start to 2019! It looks like we may be in the middle of long cold snap. Please remember that once the wind chill is warmer than -27 C we will be back outside for recess. It is important that students are prepared with a hat, mitts and boots every day. Lets hope that things will start to warm up soon! We are heading into registration season once again. Our grade five students will be receiving registration packages very soon. For the most part our students will have two registration op- tions, either continuing in the English program at Salisbury Morse Place School or entering Late French Immersion at Mun- roe Junior High School. Munroe will be hosting a grade 6 open house on Wednesday, February 6 at 6:00 PM and SMP will be hosting their open house on Thursday, February 7 at 6:00 PM. Do you know any children in the neighborhood turning five years old this year? If you do please remind their families that regis- tration for Kindergarten at Hampstead School starts on Monday, March 4, 2019. Have you heard about our remarkable new club called The HHH Club? HHH stands for Hampstead Hawk Helpers and it is made up of interested grade four and five student leaders. As a group they have decided that their focus will be on spreading kindness, friendship and respect. Their first initiative was the highly suc- cessful December food drive. The HHH Club was able to collect a tremendous amount of food that they donated to help people in need. Thank you to all that contributed to this worthwhile ven- ture. This amazing group of students is busy planning, so keep your eyes open for what they come up with next. Principal’s Message

We have certainly had a cold start to 2019! It looks like we may be in the middle of long cold snap. Please remember that once the wind chill is warmer than -27 C we will be back outside for recess. It is important that students are prepared with a hat, mitts and boots every day. Let’s hope that things will start to warm up soon!

We are heading into registration season once again. Our grade five students will be receiving registration packages very soon. For the most part our students will have two registration op-tions, either continuing in the English program at Salisbury Morse Place School or entering Late French Immersion at Mun-roe Junior High School. Munroe will be hosting a grade 6 open house on Wednesday, February 6 at 6:00 PM and SMP will be hosting their open house on Thursday, February 7 at 6:00 PM.

Do you know any children in the neighborhood turning five years old this year? If you do please remind their families that regis-tration for Kindergarten at Hampstead School starts on Monday, March 4, 2019.

Have you heard about our remarkable new club called The HHH Club? HHH stands for Hampstead Hawk Helpers and it is made up of interested grade four and five student leaders. As a group they have decided that their focus will be on spreading kindness, friendship and respect. Their first initiative was the highly suc-cessful December food drive. The HHH Club was able to collect a tremendous amount of food that they donated to help people in need. Thank you to all that contributed to this worthwhile ven-ture. This amazing group of students is busy planning, so keep your eyes open for what they come up with next.

Thank you,

Kindergarten Registration Week at all River East Trans-cona School Division Schools is March 4-8, 2019 at 8:00 a.m. Kindergarten registration is open for all children born in 2014. This means that your child must have their fifth birthday on or before December 31, 2019. In order to register your child, you must bring two pieces of iden-tification that provide proof of address (e.g. Driver’ Li-cense, Manitoba Health Card, Tenancy Agreement, Offer to Purchase) ) and one piece of identification which pro-vides proof of age (e.g. Birth Certificate or Baptismal Certificate). Birth Certificates can be obtained from the

Vital Statistics Department, 254 Portage Avenue, 204-945-6844. This information is re-quired and must be presented at the time of registration. Please pass this information to any neighbours or friends who have children ready for Kindergarten, but would not receive this newsletter.

Tweet Tweet: The Birds Need to Eat!

The grade one class at Hamp-stead School built bird feeders. We used recycled materials like water bottles, boxes and string. We were just like little scien-tists, watching the birds through the window to see if they were eating our seeds. In the winter, birds have a hard time finding food. We wanted to help the birds in this freezing, cold win-ter.

News from Room 15 Well, we seemed to have returned from the holiday break eager and ready to dive into a new P.B.L. unit on famous structures. P.B.L., is a learning model where many subject areas are incorporated into a single unit of study, in this instance the study of famous structures around the world. We will be looking at famous structures to find shapes, patterns and numbers within the structures. We will use famous structures to learn how to complete online research and data collec-tion. We will be learning about writing for information sharing, or expository writing, to tell others about the famous structures we have chosen. The social studies curriculum components will be represented in various activities that al-low us to find famous structures around the world. For the grand finale, the show stopper if you will, we will recreate the famous structure we have chosen to study using materials that can be found in the classroom or home. If you could please have your child bring clean recyclables to school for use in this project that would be wonderful. Clean recyclables include: paper towel rolls, flyers, plastic fruit or vegetable containers, yogurt cups that have been washed out and allowed to dry and anything that is not wet or that has been in a bathroom. Please do not send anything breakable like glass or any empty cans that have sharp edges. We have a special guest coming to visit us on February 11th. We have been antic-ipating her arrival and we have been imagining what it will be like to have her visit our classroom and school.

It may be cold outside, but Hampstead students are working hard and keeping warm in Phys. Ed. class! After returning from winter break, the students wast-ed no time in getting back into the swing of extracurricular activities. Cheer-leading club started up again during the first week back. We have been working on thigh stands and a variety of jumps. Additionally, gymnastics club started as well for the grade 3, 4 and 5 students. We have had a big turn out so far and are practicing twice a week for the month of January. We are planning to add extra practices in February to prepare for the divisional tumbling rally at Kil-donan East Collegiate in March. The Hampstead curling rink is currently being constructed. There is a curling bonspiel planned in February for the grade 4 and 5 students. We will be partici-pating with two other schools for this event. There is also the Family Chili and Curling night to look forward to on February 21st where the whole family can come to Hampstead and enjoy some good times and good food. Ms. Dodds our in-house literacy support worker has been joining classrooms to promote various aspects of Indigenous culture and teachings. Ms. Dodds has been involved in teaching about the medi-cine wheel and helping Room 15 learn about plants as medicine.

Louis Riel day is February 18th, 2019. The school will be closed and will re-open February 19th.

Library News In December, our Grade 1-5 students participated in coding activities as part of a larger Hour of Code event. Students from the University of Manitoba’s WISE Kid-Netic program came to kick start their fun with Robot Mice and Dash Robot. Many of our students continued to explore coding through Hour of Code modules, Ozobots and Spheros. All of the students had a great time using their problem solving skills while coding. Well done, everyone!

We have many fantastic clubs running in the library right now, including Busy Builders, Open Library, Picture Book Reading Club, and MYRCA.

Of course, it is almost I Love to Read month too! Such excitement! Hamp-stead is celebrating our love of reading through special dress up days every Thursday, DEAR (drop everything and read) every Tuesday, and many guest readers throughout the month. Classes are participating in a tournament-style “February Face Off” to determine Hampstead’s favourite picture book, as well! There are also numerous opportunities for students to win prizes. Stu-dent participation in reading activities and celebrations can earn them a draw ticket. The home activity calendar is a way for you to be involved in the fun too! Please help your child compete as many of the activities as possible and return it (signed) on/by March 1. Thanks for sharing our love of reading!

Happy reading,

Mrs. Card, Teacher-Librarian

& Mrs. Kauk, Library Technician

ILLNESS AND STAYING IN AT RECESS

From time to time, children are sent to school with bad colds, the flu or other contagious conditions. This puts other children in their class at risk. Please make arrangements for your child to stay at home when ill so that the safest possible environment can be created for everyone.

It is best that children too sick to go out for recess be kept home. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding of this matter.
