WhO WE AREHammersmithLondon BID is a non-profit company, first voted in in March 2006, with our mandate renewed for a second 5-year-term in March 2011

We aim to provide new and expanded services within the BID area, as identified by the local businesses to improve the working and trading environment, in four key areas:

pROTECT the area

IMpROVE the environment

ENERGISE the town centre

CONNECT the community

We work in close partnership with public bodies like the council and police but we are entirely independent, funded by our BID levy payers and additional revenue streams

We provide ‘additionality’ to council amenities, not substitute services

And in 2011/12 we expanded our offer even further…

pROTECT the area

• Introduced Wise Up! as an efficient portfolio event, building on our existing provision on crime awareness, Olympics awareness, Dr Bike and book-swapping

• Continued to provide exclusive CCTV coverage for the BID area - leading to 177 arrests

• Banned 37 undesirables from BID pubs under our BOBB (Behave or Be Banned) Pubwatch scheme

• Introduced monthly meetings with the police inspector and placed a BID representative on the Ward Panel of the town centre Safer Neighbourhood Team

• Received 61,535 transmissions on our Safetynet retail security radio system

• Hosted 10 Pubwatches in 2011 and introduced retail meetings

• Focussed on improving the BID’s evening economy with an audit towards a Purple Flag award

• We now provide 7,200 additional police patrol hours per year as well as re-organising policing beats into quadrants: more personal, more efficient, more responsive

• Provided dozens of up-to-the-minute updates during the August 2011 riots, via Safetynet, our website and Twitter, passing on information learned in regular meetings with the police

• BID operator Alex Pryde earned praise from the London Assembly for his cool head under pressure in the riots

“Alex Pryde [BID CCTV operator] was one of the

many Londoners who showed courage and

kindness in the defence of their

city and care for their fellow citizens during

and after the violent disorder

of 6-8 August.”

IMpROVE the environment

• 1 in 3 BID businesses now recycle with our free recycling scheme

• Nearly 140 tonnes of waste were processed in 2011 - and 200 tonnes of CO2 were saved

• Our seasonally-themed hanging baskets and planted areas won us two Silvers at the London in Bloom awards

• Added extra sparkle to Christmas with a towering tree and more lights: 60 sets in total

• For the Royal Wedding, we gave and installed bunting to pubs along King St for a patriotic feel

• As part of our commitment to alternative revenue streams, we won £15,000 to pay for a greening audit: aiming to change Hammersmith from grey to green. Recommendations are set to include green roofs, pocket parks, rain gardens and additional tree-planting.

• Our HammersmithLondon Roof Garden was put on London’s map of top outside areas by a glowing review in the Evening Standard

• In partnership with the Borough and Legible London, we delivered the Way-Finding Scheme throughout the town centre

• Won £3,000 from Westrans and LBHF towards Transport Forum, Dr Bike and our programme of walks

• Inspected the Bywaters Materials Recovery Facility to check how the recycling waste is handled

Bunting for the Royal Wedding, April 2011

“It’s obvious to all of us that

Hammersmith town centre is now a cleaner,

safer, generally lovelier place

to be these days…”

ENERGISE the town centre

• 2011 footfall figures showed overall green shoots of recovery, indicating that shoppers are returning; our Summer 2011 events noticeably increased footfall throughout the town centre

• 87% of all those who came to events at the Summer Festival 2011 thought that the events were ‘Great’ or ‘Good’ - and 80% had already spent money in Hammersmith that day

• Just one of our expanded Christmas events -Peppa Pig switching on the Christmas Lights - brought over 1700 people into Kings Mall, over a three hour period

• Nearly 5,000 Privilege Card holders now enjoy a weekly e-shot bringing them deals, discounts and VIP shopping events from around the BID

• In addition to providing Wimbledon coverage on our Big Screen in Lyric Square, we expanded our Summer Film Nights programme to pioneer live-streamed opera from the Royal Opera House, widening our cultural offering

• Introduced an Easter Egg Hunt - and built on the success of our Halloween Pumpkin Hunt again - bringing increased footfall into over 40 retailers

• Partnership-working with the Lyric introduced Theatre in the Square to our full programme of summer entertainment, setting the bar for our triple-expanded, 11-week 2012 Summer Festival

Theatre in the Square, June 2011

“We’re quite serious at

work, so it’s good to have

something fun to go to during our lunch hour

or after work… we all love the

Summer Festival, chilling on the

deckchairs and enjoying the

entertainment ! ”

Camilla Evans, BID levy-payer
