Important School Updates
HVTV is up and running!
The HVTV group, comprised of Middle and Later Years students have
been filming and working on video modelling examples of how to
demonstrate our school expectations. These among other things have
been put into a TV program, we call HVTV. They will continue to produce
episodes throughout the year. We hope to have an episode produced
every 2-3 weeks. These can be accessed on the schools Facebook page.

Principals Address
I hope everyone is managing with our sudden cold blast of weather. It’s certainly time to rug up and keep
warm.
Education Week
Thank-you to everyone who came along to our Open Classrooms last week and saw their children
participating in their learning programs. It was great that people took up this opportunity with some enjoying
the experience so much they returned the next day! I hope everyone is also enjoying viewing the pictures,
videos and HV TV presentations on our school Facebook Page. The response from the community so far has
been fantastic. Many thanks to Warren Dawson for leading this work.
School Review
As part of our School Review process this year we will be seeking feedback about our school from families.
We will be conducting a Parent Forum during our SSG Meeting afternoon where parents/carers will have the
opportunity to provide feedback related to key questions that will inform our self-evaluation and future
planning. More information closer to the date. A survey will also be provided to families for those who may not
be able to participate in the Forum.
Our Student Free Day on Tuesday 11th June will include time for staff to reflect on our achievements during our
first 18 months of operation and consider our progress in strategic planning areas.
Every Day Counts
The building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school
each and every day. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future –
a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have
missed more than a year of school.
We understand that on the odd occasion your child may be late for school or need to leave earlier than
3.00pm. These should be the exception not the rule, such as for medical or therapy appointments. Having
your child in a regular routine has many benefits, including where they travel by bus, and ensures they are
well settled for their day of learning at school.
Staffing Matters
We are grateful for the support we receive from local secondary schools and external agencies that has seen
a number of student placements across the year, both Education Support and Teacher. This is valuable
assistance for our staff. So far this year it has included Clonard Collage and Western Heights Secondary
(SBATs), Gen U and Western Autism Institute.
Yours in educational partnership,
Sue Armstrong

Admin News
Child safety is a high priority at Hamlyn Views School and we have zero tolerance for child abuse. With this in mind, we have
put processes in place to ensure the safety of our students with all adults they interact with through the course of their
schooling. This includes processes for volunteers, recruitment and visitors. Volunteers are an important part of our school
community and we encourage our parents and carers to volunteer their time to participate in whole school and classroom
events and activities. All volunteers will be required to: provide a current Working with Children Check, read and sign our Child
Safety Code of Conduct and complete a volunteer induction. If you would like to volunteer and need some more information
about child safety, you can view the Child Safety Policy, Child Safety Code of Conduct and Volunteers policy on the Hamlyn
Views school website: https://hamlynviews.vic.edu.au/our-school/#policies
International Guests
Earlier this week, Hamlyn Views School was fortunate enough to host a range of
international guests for a tour of our school. On Tuesday 28th May, a group of delegates from New
Zealand were hosted at the school, including ministerial officials, principal delegates and architects as
they embark on the journey of building 3 new schools designed to cater for students with disabilities in
inclusive settings. They were incredibly impressed with the facilities at our school and with the excellent
learning that was occurring in the classrooms and commented on this after the tour. As a thank you
gesture we were presented with a lovely gift presented in a beautiful handmade bag including some
fascinating books featuring the Kiwi bird and the two newest additions to our mascot family Kuwi and Kiki the kiwis.
Buses
We are still working with Gold Bus to implement improvements to our current bus routes. Due to circumstances outside of the
school’s control, this process is taking much longer than anticipated. At this point in time we do not expect any changes to
come into effect now until the start of Term 3. Thank you to the parents who have provided feedback around the current
service and for being patient with bus delays when they occur. Could all parents be mindful of the effect on the timeliness of
the service if the bus needs to wait at a stop for parents to arrive. The maximum time the bus can wait at any stop is 3 minutes.
Please endeavor to be at your child’s stop at least 5 minutes earlier than the scheduled time. If you are going to be late,
communicate with the bus directly and you may be able to arrange to meet them at the next stop along the route.
School Photos
On Friday we will pass any photo orders and monies received at the school on to MSP Photography for processing. If you have
ordered online, you do not need to return your envelope to school. If you need to order photos after Friday, please contact
MSP Photography directly on 5222 6747. They will accept phone orders with payment by card or cash payments may be
dropped in to their office in Moolap.

Later Years News
For the last couple of weeks, students in Later Years class have been focusing on Co-ordinates for
Maths. Students are able to find the coordinates on a map and locate the item/object on the map.
They have been really focused and enthusiastic for Co-ordinates.

Middle Years Green have been using the Life Skills room this week. We have been learning how to
set the table, wash the dishes, use the dishwasher and vacuum. Working in the Life Skills room is a
great way to practice our Maths and English also, as we count objects in the kitchen, read
instructions, write about our work and more. We even enjoyed a sneaky Milo as reward for our
effort. We will keep practicing these skills each week, and then we can help out at home with
some chores – and maybe even earn some pocket money

Our students have had some fun and engaging experiences in both Performing and Visual Arts over the last few weeks. In
preparation for Mother’s Day, we were busy making special cards and messages to honour and thank our Mums for all that they
do. We also learnt a special song to sing at the Mother’s Day afternoon tea. Students rehearsed “You Are My Sunshine” and
performed it with sign language for all who attended the lovely event.
In Performing Arts this term, we are exploring the old Brother’s Grimm fairy tale “Pif Paf Poltrie” with the younger groups. This is in
collaboration with Mel and the Music Therapy students who have facilitated the process and have been part of our Wednesday
morning sessions. All our students have thoroughly enjoyed the songs, costume and props whilst also learning about the quirky
characters. The older students have enjoyed elements of role play and improvisation as well as vocal performance and dance.
In Visual Art, we have started working towards our pieces for the upcoming WILD exhibition at Eastern Hub at the end of term 3.
This term we are doing 3D paper mache animal constructions. Students are busy thinking about how to utilise recycled materials
and problem solve in the process. The art principal of space is an integral part of constructions. The work grows out of the
materials, so I am encouraging decision making in the techniques of changing and combining materials. Over the next few
weeks we will be working with paper mache glue and clay so I am anticipating a fun, albeit messy learning process! I will be
encouraging all students to wear smocks to hopefully minimise any mess on uniforms.
In building our Arts resources, we are always happy to receive recycled Art and Craft materials and second-hand clothing or
props you may have at home. Thank you to those families who have already given so much to our Arts resources! For Performing
Arts, I’m hoping to source a large mirror and costumes / props. I want our students to engage in imaginative role play and would
appreciate if you have any of the following items to donate:
Mirror Hats Scarves Dresses Old
telephone Masks
Aprons Shirts Coats Capes Faux flowers Handbags
Umbrellas Vintage
suitcases Tea set Walking stick
Hand
puppets shoes
If you would like to get in touch with me, please send me a message on Seesaw or via the front office. Many thanks again for
supporting the Arts at Hamlyn Views.

Students have been enjoying the recent arrival of our Body Socks made locally by
Wendy’s Weighted Blankets! A body sock is used for sensory regulation made with
lycra; a wonderfully stretchy fabric that the students can climb into and then walk, run,
jump, or crawl for sensory, deep pressure input and heavy resistance or for finding a
quiet spot to feel calm. A body sock is portable, fun and can be used creatively!

Resource Smart News
Unfortunately, a little disappointing news to start, we were not successful in receiving a Sustainability Victoria
Resource Smart award with Herne Hill P.S. for our joint work on the ‘Project Views’ garden on Lily Street.
However, we are going to be recognised for our work and will receive a runners up certificate in the coming
weeks.
A couple of weeks ago I presented our student Green Team with their certificates and soon I will present
them with their badges too. If we could be diligent when ensuring that these badges remain at school, and
if they are accidentally sent home could they please be sent back to school. Well done to Zulfiqar, Angus,
Sarah, Alexis, Harmony, Hayden, Logan and Xian for being our Green Team leaders this week. I look forward
to completing some work with you for our upcoming units of work on Energy. Thanks again to Samantha
Lester, from The Farmer’s Place, for presenting these awards at our assembly.
Some good news is that this week we were
delivered the Resource Smart 1 star sign to go
on the front of the school
– keep an eye out for this!

Resource Smart Tips:
Damon Gameau (‘That Sugar Film’) has released a new film
‘2040’ inspiring our younger generations to have a think about
what our world could be like by then. You can view the trailer
and take a survey to ‘join the regeneration’ on the website;

Composting Tips. Chop your materials into small pieces, which
will break down faster. Always cover your layer of green
material with a layer of brown material to cut down on flies
and mask any odours.
