Hamilton Boys’ High School is situated in central Hamilton on 20 hectares of magnificent playing fields, well maintained buildings and grounds.

The school’s zone comprises a large part of the central area of Hamilton city on both sides of the river. Out of Zone applications are welcomed.

The school has approximately 2,200 boys from Year 9 to Year 13. Of those, 2,000 are day boys and approximately 200 of these travel from outlying areas. There are over thirty different nationalities attending the school; most of our students are permanently resident in New Zealand, but the roll also includes a cohort of up to 70 international fee-paying students.

The school boarding hostel, Argyle House, meets the needs of families throughout the greater Waikato and North Island. Argyle House is an important part of the tradition and culture of the school.

The school has a clear commitment amongst its academic staff on the need for effective single-sex education for boys. As a consequence, the school is actively developing a range of leading-edge learning programmes for boys and young men and offers a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities and

opportunities. We ensure that all school activities are conducted in a well-structured environment which supports and extends each boy’s abilities.

Academic Focus: Hamilton Boys’ High School will deliver a quality, balanced academic curriculum which aims at excellence, through the maintenance of high standards of delivery and an emphasis on encouraging all students to realise their full scholastic potential.

Positive Citizenship: Students take pride in the traditions and values of the school, respect the needs and rights of others and are positive in their contributions to, and participation in, the life of the school in the widest sense.

Participation and Achievement: Hamilton Boys’ High School provides opportunities for participation in a wide range of co-curricular activities and, through quality coaching and management, ensures opportunities to compete and succeed at regional and national levels.

Strong School Spirit: Hamilton Boys’ High School is founded on core values that blend the values of the past with the challenge of the future, so students develop and grow in a safe, progressive and nourishing environment.

ADVANCED LEARNING PROGRAMME (ALP)

Hamilton Boys’ High School recognizes, respects and responds to the educational needs of all students including those with exceptional, different and special needs.

All teaching programmes at Hamilton Boys’ High School are focused upon the specific learning needs of boys.

New students have their strengths and weaknesses assessed through standardized diagnostic testing and profiling data (e.g. from contributing schools and parents enrolment information). This information is carefully analysed and students are placed in classes that offer differentiated programmes which cater for their educational needs, providing work at the relevant speed, depth and complexity.

The Advanced Learning Programme (or ALP) identifies and caters for our most able academic students. In Year 9 and 10, these boys are placed in ‘one-band’ classes, where they have a programme that both extends and enriches them academically and personally.

Within this broad group, students who have exceptional abilities in one or more areas are placed on individualised programmes (IEPs) which may involve the full range of strategies recognized as catering for highly gifted students.

Selected Year 9 ALP (one-band) classes have a compacted Social Studies and Science curriculum (covers Year 9 and 10 curriculum). In Mathematics, 2 classes follow an accelerated programme, completing the Year 10 Mathematics course. Enrichment and extension activities are offered in English. They also undertake an intensive one day Learning Retreat and enter in various competitions. Selected Year 10 ALP students study towards their NCEA Level 1 qualifications, in a range of subjects.

Selected Year 11 ALP students have the option of studying towards the IGCSE qualification through the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). This is in addition to completing their Level 1 NCEA. Selected Year 12 ALP students are able to choose to study towards their AS Level qualification through the CIE, as well as completing their Level 2 NCEA.In Year 13 the focus is on completing Level 3 NCEA and attaining N.Z. Scholarship Awards.

ALP PATHWAY

LEARNING SUPPORT PROGRAMME (LSP)This programme caters for students, identified from our entrance testing and profile information, as requiring additional support for their learning. They are accommodated in our three-band classes, which have smaller student numbers and a teacher aide in all the core subjects, to allow specific and direct assistance.

All strategies implemented (e.g. reading assistance) are based on thorough and proven research and are delivered by well trained professionals. Learning support continues in Year 11, 12 and 13. This can include assistance for those needing special examination conditions (e.g. reader and writer assistance), based upon strict educational criteria, evaluated each year.

Argyle House - Residential Hostel

Argyle House is the Hamilton Boys’ High School’s residential hostel. Located within the school grounds it has facilities

to accommodate 170 boarding students. Argyle House is a central part of the school community with a long tradition of

academic and co-curricular excellence.

Accommodation FacilitiesThe two-storey hostel has a range of excellent accommodation facilities which include three-bed cubicles and modern twin rooms for junior students to motel-style units and single rooms for senior students. The accommodation is of a very high standard. All rooms each have their own study facilities.

Juniors (Year 9 and 10) have a spacious lounge, a large TV room with Sky and DVD facilities and a games room for pool and table tennis. Juniors also have a ‘prep’ room where they can complete their homework or study, and access computers networked to school.

Seniors (Year 11 and 12) have their own separate lounge with Sky TV and other facilities, a relaxation area, laundry and kitchen facilities. All seniors have facilities to complete their ‘prep’ in their units.

Grove (Year 13) The Grove offers Year 13 students accommodation adjacent to Hamilton Boys’ High School. Each student has their own self-contained room with a kitchenette, ensuite bathroom, toilet, shower, a study desk and shelving, fridge, king-single bed, couch/chair. Rooms are positioned off a central hallway. There is a communal laundry, kitchen and lounge. Residing at The Grove is a privilege for a maximum of 27 Year 13 students. Lunch and dinner are provided at Argyle House. Breakfast is self-catered. One Master and two Assistant Masters are in residence at The Grove.

Student CareThe daily life of the boarder is under the direct personal supervision of the Head of Boarding, six Masters, three Assistant Masters, one week day Matron residing on-site and one weekend Matron residing off-site. The Matrons take care of any medical needs which the boys may have. A qualified Catering Manager and staff provide all meals to ensure the boys’ nutritional needs are met.

StudyEvening studies and prep are an important part of life at Argyle House. They are supervised by three masters each night during the week who provide help to the boys where they need it to complete their homework or study. Year 9 and 10 students study in the Prep Room, Year 11 students in the Dining Room, while Yr 12 & Yr 13 students work in their own room. The hostel has computers available for prep and wi-fi access.

Team BuildingArgyle House is one of the six Houses of Hamilton Boys’ High School. House competition at the school is strong and generates tremendous pride and team spirit amongst the boys and in the hostel. Argyle House also has its own in-House competition for the Matthew Allen Memorial Cup.

School Clubs and ActivitiesA vast range of opportunities are available to boarders to join in sports, clubs and activities available both within and outside school. The hostel has its own mini-van to transport boys to venues to attend music lessons, sports training and numerous other activities. At school the boys can participate in any of more than twenty cultural activities and forty different sporting codes.

Argyle House

Applying for Admission to Argyle HouseInitial applications can be made for any boy eight years of age and over for admission to Argyle House when he reaches Year 9. Because there is an absolute limit on the number of places available we recommend that parents or guardians who know they would like the child to board at Argyle House when they go to high school make an early initial application. The total number of places available for Year 9 students at Argyle House is normally about 35.

All applications for admission to Argyle House must be received by 5 April 2019. The student must be eligible for admission to the school before a place at Argyle House can be offered. Application forms will be sent directly to all those who have completed an initial application form. Year 10-13 applications close late Term 3 each year.

Application forms must be completed in full (including attachments) along with the Confidential Medical Information and Permission form and submitted to Head of Boarding, Hamilton Boys’ High School, Private Bag 3201, Waikato Mail Centre, Hamilton 3240.

The school’s criteria for student selection for a place in Argyle House are:• the primary consideration when awarding a place is to select

students who have the greatest need and who have the ability to contribute most to hostel life;

• both the hostel and the school must confirm that each has the ability to meet the individual needs of the student.

In making selections, consideration must be given to the mix of students chosen for hostel places which reflects the community as a whole, maintains a balance of form levels and ages and contributes to a good mix of interests. If a student meets all the initial criteria for consideration he will be invited to attend an interview with the Headmaster, Head of Boarding and Senior Master.

Following these interviews the first allocation of places for the following year is made in May.

Fees Argyle House has been established solely for the benefit of the residential students at Hamilton Boys’ High School. The fees for 2019 are $12,326 (including GST) plus a Building Levy of $400. The fees are subject to annual review by the BOT. For all new enrolments a deposit of $1,500 is required to be paid by 12 October 2019. This is refunded when your son leaves the hostel provided there are no outstanding fees. The fees are payable in 9 equal instalments commencing February. In the event of withdrawal from the hostel, it is required that a term’s notice be given in writing to the Secretary of the Board of Trustees. Otherwise one term’s fees will be payable in lieu of such notice.

Bursary EligibilitySome students may be eligible for a boarding bursary or secondary school scholarship. Details of eligibility can be obtained from your present principal or through the Ministry of Education. (www.minedu.govt.nz)

Scholarship1. A Year 10 scholarship is awarded by the hostel committee to the

most outstanding Year 9 pupil. 2. A Senior Boarding Scholarship may be awarded to a Year 12 or

13 student, who is able to demonstrate he would clearly benefit from being a boarder at Hamilton Boys’ High School, and that he is unable to access the same academic, sporting or cultural achievements at his local school.
