    Halls NewsNo doubt you will all be busy with upcoming assignmentsand tests. Keep trucking along, only 2 more weeks tillEaster Break, yet only 8 weeks away are examinations!This is make or break time now, so hopefully yourealready in the habit of reviewing notes daily and at theend of the week to better prepare yourself for the revisionjust before exams. There will be plenty of upcomingworkshops to help you prepare your approach to

    studying and swatting for your exams, you can find thisinformation from the Centre of Teaching andLearning in Level 2, Registry.

    Balance your Massey experience by remembering to takesome time out by involving yourself in the HCG events.We have had many fantastic events thus far with all thehalls vying for gumboot points. City Court iscurrently in the leading run for the Gumboot Shield, butremember it is early days and plenty of points are yet tobe won.

    Coming up next month on May 11th after the midsemester break is an event targeted at our internationalhall residents called Kiwiana. This is a celebration ofKiwi Culture with an opportunity for students toexperience a taste of New Zealand. There will be an arrayof different Kiwi foods, classic NZ Icons andcultural performances.

    Another upcoming event to think about is theResidents Ball. More details are inside for the firstResident Committee get together to begin preparations.

    TOUCH TOURNEYIt was the perfect Sunday afternoon on the Massey rugby fields for this years HCG TouchTourney. The sun was shining and the wind was blowing just enough to cool down those worn outplayers. The day started with a lesson in pronunciation, Pacific Island pronunciation at that. Onemember from each hall was chosen to stand before one of the players from the Massey Rams. AnIslander name was presented to the hall member as a member from the Rams team chargedtowards them. Some pronunciations were correct and escaped getting tackled, such an effort wasnoted from Caitlin Dodunski from Totara Hall; however others were not as fortunate. As forThomas Scrimgeour from McHardy Hall, his pronunciation was not up to par. Both Caitlin andThomas won giant chocolate rugby balls for their outstanding effort.

    As the day continued, spectators poured in to support their respective halls. Felicity Lawrence fromTararua/Ruahine particularly stood out, winning herself a giant blow up rugby ball. Katrina, Libby,Jacqui and Sarah from Miro hall also snagged themselves a blow up rugby ball for providing someentertaining dance moves. Their rendition of Backstreet Boys was quite impressive.

    On the rugby side of things, with many competitive teams vying for the touch trophy and valuablegumboot points, it was a close call this year. At the end of the day City Court were named the2011 Touch Tourney champions, followed by CraigLockhart/Bindaloe in 2nd place, Miro hall in 3rdplace and Walter Dyer in 4th place. The days MVPs were awarded to Andre Fatiaki fromCraiglockhart/Bindaloe and Amy Crooymans from City Court. They both walked away with a $50

    Rebel Sports voucher for their dazzling efforts on the field. Also noted were those players withexceptional sportsmanship. Awarded each with a $50.00 Aberdeen Restaurant gift voucher wereDenise Kendall from Rotary Court and Alma Laurenson from Walter Dyer. A big thank you toAberdeen for sponsoring the vouchers towards the event.

    FREE FLU VACCINATIONS

    Alcohol Use - Are you Safe?

    Binge Drinking

    Why spoil a perfectly good night by drinking too much and feeling too sick to keeppartying? You will also spoil the night for those you are with your friends thenhave to stop partying too to look after you!

    There is nothing worse than having to take responsibility for someone who isthrowing up on your best shoes, all because they didnt know their limits!!

    It can totally wreck your weekend. After a hard night you will spend theremainder of the weekend feeling bad or laying in bed what a waste!!

    It can seriously hurt your wallet, Drinking is an expensive exercise. Try this; thinkof how much money you spend on alcohol in a month. Is it a significant amount?What else could you have spent with that money?

    Binge drinking can make you very ill, some people end up in hospital having theirstomachs pumped.

    If your normal inhibitions are down when you drink, you can be headed intostormy territory. You could be at a party and your friends leave without you. Howare you going to handle a bad situation such as a friend having a serious accidentwhen you yourself cant even stand up straight?

    If a group that you drink with begin to badger you, leave the situation as there areworse things than being called a dork or loser, like landing in hospital, before thecourts or becoming an addict and losing your life.

    Just remember that real friends will stick up for you rather than join in with thecrowd and try to embarrass you into doing something that will compromiseyourself later on.

    Like anything, saying NO the first time can be hard, but once you take that firststep it will only get easier. Even though this sounds corny, it really is ok to say noand more importantly, sticking to your personal boundaries will give you a senseof self worth, self respect and will make you more confident in yourself.

    These qualities are worth far more than being the cool person of the week! So keepyour chin up and if you dont want to do something your so-called mates arepressuring you to do, DONT. Say NO and if you have to, just walk away.

    Party Checklist

    A checklist for the streetwise among us to guarantee asuccessful night out.

    Eat...A good night out always starts with a full stomach.

    Drink...Water. Lots of H20 will keep you on the go. ..Joe!

    Start it Slow...Thats right. Go non-alcoholic for the first rounds,dont rush, the drinks are not going to run away.

    Play the Field...Alternate between alcoholic and non-alcoholicdrinks. As they say variety is the spice of life.

    Think Ahead...This will save time and money and hassle, how are yougetting home? Is it safe? How much am I going to drinktonight? How good do I want to feel in the morning? Havea plan and stick with it.

    Tips for a Good Night Out

    Stick together

    You love your mates (most of the time) so when yourdrinking, stick together and look out for each other.Its best if someone is not going to get too wreckedand can keep an eye on the rest.

    Share a taxiIf you dont want to bother anyone else then stashsome money away for a taxi ride home. Sharing willsave cash.

    Going it aloneThis is not a crash hot idea. If you have to walkhome, try to walk with a friend. Dont let your

    friends wander off alone either.

    Watch your drinksDrink spiking is very common in clubs and bars,watch your drink and your friends drinks, watch thedrink being poured, dont ever accept a drink from astranger, never leave your drink unattended if indoubt tip it out!!!

    Drinking alcohol is your choice, if you dont want to drink,no one can make you. If they say anything about yourchoice that makes you feel bad, maybe you should

    reconsider the company you keep!

    Friends support each others decisions that is whatfriendship is all about. You can choose to make your nightout a pleasant experience or a bad one. Sometimes less ismore have a few, feel good, but not out of control. Listento your body and think about your own limits.

    FREE ICECREAMS AND PRIZES!!!Do yourself a favour and do the Medical Centre a favour at the sametime. The Medical Centre is short of staff and we really dont wantto see you with the flu this winter. Come along to one of two earlyevening clinics at the Medical Centre where you can have a free fluvaccination followed by a free ice-cream. This offer is open to allHalls students.

    This years flu jab contains vaccine against the most likely flustrains this winter including H1N1. Many of you may not have beenexposed to that swine flu yet so get protected this year and avoid fluleading up to the end of semester exams. In the process enjoy a freeice-cream and be in to win money! Everyone taking advantage ofthis offer will go into a draw to win one of six $50.00 vouchers andthe Hall of Residence having the highest percentage uptake of this

    offer will win $100.00 for their Hall social fund.

    We plan to run the clinics between 5 pm and 7 pm on Tuesday 3May and again on Thursday 5 May at the Medical Centre. So makeit a date. We really would like to see you there. Help us to help youand dont forget that free ice-cream!

    RESIDENTS OF THE MONTH

    Denise is from the US and currently resides in RotaryCourt Studying International Public Relations with aminor in Media Communications. Denise has come overto NZ for just one semester and will return home inJuly. While in NZ, Denise has been active playing avariety of sports for her hall. She has an interest ingetting to know New Zealand better and also likes to

    travel and socialise.A highlight for her was Crazy Sports day: It was themost people I've seen from my hall get together and havefun. We worked as a team...though we lost; it was still

    loads of fun! ~Denise.

    Denise was nominated this month because she hasbeen a very positive and reliable team member whilealso demonstrating a thorough commitment to herstudies. She has been an active participant in all hallevents which, for her, has even included fundraising,writing hall chants and organising sports teams. Withinthe hall she is courteous and friendly to others andtakes responsibility.

    I hope that people from my hall can stay active andinvolved in the events that we cometogether as a hall. It's such a great way to have fun!!

    Congratulations! You have nearly made it to theend of your first term at Massey. To havesurvived thus far you must have a sturdyconstitution both physically (to survive theappallingly BBQd sausages of O week) andmentally (to cope with the trauma of academic

    study). So congratulations are surely in order!

    Enjoy your Easter break. Whilst enjoying it youmight give some thought to its origins. If theChristian story is correct then, some 2000 yearsago on the outskirts of Jerusalem, an event tookplace which is not just the focal point of somepeoples personal spirituality but a turning pointin history.

    If, in Jesus Christ, God was somehow supremely

    revealing himself to us, his loving self sacrificesomehow absorbing and breaking the power ofevil in the world, then this is surely worthy ofserious attention. If that extraordinary act wasvindicated by an equally extraordinary physicalrising from the dead, then our attention is doublydeserved. So check it out and find out whyEaster is truly worth celebrating.

    WOW WORKSHOPS

    Massey Manawatu Halls (Massey Halls Community Group and Campus Living) arenow on Facebook if you wish to make contact or find out more information aboutus please log onto your Facebook page and select like Massey Manawatu Halls ofResidence.

    The Ways of Wellness (WOW) seminar series started twoyears ago with the intention to offer support in theprovision of presentations covering common issues facingstudents as they progress through university life. Theemphasis is on education coupled with suggestions andbasic skills students can use to manage and enhance theirstudent experiences. The WOW seminars are for allstudents, from those transitioning from school, rightthrough to postgraduate students (masters and doctoral).

    Research has proven that successful students are thosestudents who indicate high levels of well-being. Studentswho struggle are often those who have more frequent andenduring struggles with anxiety, low mood, healthylifestyle choices (around eating, sleeping, physicalactivity), relationship stressors, and negative thinkingpatterns. Research has also shown that for students whoaccess support services (counselling, outreachprogrammes) there is a positive correlation with academicsuccess.

    What is wellness? It is not just physical health. Wellness

    includes; emotional and psychological well-being, diet,relationships, thinking styles, how we balance life,communication, finding meaning, self-esteem andconfidence. These aspects of wellness are all interrelated,and often when one or more of these is not in a good state,then our overall sense of wellness and wellbeing is affected.The WOW seminars take this holistic view with theseminars all addressing these various aspects ofwellness.

    Wellness is also about taking charge of your life andmaking healthy choices to remain energised, interested,motivated, confident and able to cope with the stresses and

    pressures throughout the academic year. There will bepapers that youll find easy and some more challenging.There could be times when you experience uncertainty,feelings of inadequacy, loneliness, and disappointments.

    There will be times of exhilaration too, ups and downs inother words.

    The WOW seminars will help you to recognise the warningsigns of being overwhelmed, burnout, stress and panic.Alongside this guidance will be offered about the sorts ofthings you can do to bounce back, and stay on top.

    The WOW seminar programme for 2011 runs duringsemesters 1 and 2 on Thursday lunchtimes from 1pm to

    1.50pm in REF2. This year WOW seminars will beavailable live online through http://connect.massey.ac.nz/wow. If you miss one, you will be able to view the seminarl a t e r t h r o u g h a l i n k p o s t e d o n t h ehttp://health-counselling.massey.ac.nz/ website. Forextramural students who are unable to attend campusbased workshops, this is an opportunity to benefit fromstudent resources you otherwise would not have access to.

    The first seminar of each semester is a taster to give you anopportunity to learn more about up and coming topics. Fromthis you will be able to decide which of the WOW seminarswill be of interest to you. The other seminars cover life

    balance, food and mood, procrastination, how to cope withand manage exam stress, time management, andmaintaining an optimistic outlook. The presenters are allexperts in their respective fields with many years ofexperience working in the tertiary environment.

    As you face the challenges of your personal journey towardsbecoming a successful university student you will soondiscover you are not alone. Other students around you facesimilar challenges. The WOW seminars offer you theopportunity to meet and share with other students.Attendance to the seminars has the potential to enrich yourjourney of exploration and discovery. I encourage you to

    SPORT AND RECREATIONCENTRE

    Isometric Bridge

    80% of people will struggle with low back pain atsome point in their lives; much of this can beattributed to poor core stability and strength.

    Working on the core muscles can help preventand/or treat back pain by training the muscles towork more efficiently and in the correctalignment. Just like working any other musclegroup, you should start by working on thestabilizer muscles before building on the strengthof the muscles. The isometric bridge is a greatway to work the core stabilizers as well as thespinal muscles.

    How to perform the exercise:

    Place forearms on floor with elbowsdirectly under shoulders

    Extend legs back so knees will bestraight when you lift

    Lift body off ground so shoulder, hip,knee, ankle are in straight line

    Draw navel inwards to hold abdominalstight

    Hold this position for a set time; start bytrying 15sec and add to that

    As a regression, place knees on groundbut maintain shoulder, hip, knee line.

    To progress, extend elbows forward ofshoulder, or place arms on a swissball.
