The Halls Creek Town Walk is in therunning for a prestigious internationalaward, with the recent announcementfrom London that the project has beenshortlisted in the Royal Institution ofChartered Surveyors (RICS) Awards2010.
LandCorp regional manager HilaryWoodley said the Town Walk, whichofficially opened in October last year, was the culmination of the efforts of theentire Halls Creek community.
“To be a RICS award finalist is a hugeachievement for the community,” MsWoodley said.
“LandCorp worked closely with the tra-ditional owners, the community and Shireof Halls Creek to bring this project tofruition.
“Making the final shortlist in theCommunity Benefit category of theawards is a fitting testament to the fantas-tic work and input from the whole town, including the Kimberley LanguageResource Centre, Kimberley TAFE WA,Halls Creek Primary School, Red HillPrimary School and Halls Creek DistrictHigh School,” she said.
The two-kilometre walk comprises a
trail linking nine hand-crafted totems dot-ted around Halls Creek, each one express-ing one aspect of local history or culturein interpretive signage and artwork.
The walk takes around 40 minutes forthe visitor to complete and also providesaccess to the heritage-listed trackers’ hutand a bush food garden.
Other finalists in the CommunityBenefit category include the NenoSchools Project in Malawi - which aimsto help Malawi provide 1,500 schools forthe 1.7 million African children withoutaccess to education - and the BritishEmbassy in Algiers.
RICS Award 2010 winners will beannounced in London in October.

AMurdoch University program to trackendangered sawfish in the Fitzroy River
has been awarded an extra $110,000 in fund-ing.
The Natural Resource Management funding ispart of the Government’s $2 billion investmentinto Australia’s environment and will extend thesawfish tagging program currently undertaken bylocal Yiriman (Nyikina/Mangala) rangers, whichaims to increase knowledge of the threatenedspecies.
Senior Research Leader Dr David Morgan fromMurdoch University’s Freshwater Fish Groupsaid the money would pay for more acousticreceivers, used to pick up corresponding acoustictags placed on fish caught by local ranger groupsinvolved in the program.
“Basically, when one of the fish swims by thereceiver it transmits data which we then collectand collate,” he said.
“The tags tell us about the movement patternsand depth utilisation of the fish.” In collaborationwith the rangers, Dr Morgan and postgraduateresearch student Jeff Whitty had previouslytagged 25 fish with the acoustic tags.
The funding will allow for another 10 sawfishto be tagged and the project will move upstreamto the Fitzroy Crossing region and involve localpeople to tag fish in Geikie Gorge.
Dr Morgan said sawfish were also tagged withcattle tags and released, with recreational anglerswho inadvertently caught the fish asked to reportcatches to the centre.
He said Fitzroy River freshwater sawfish areimportant because populations in South East Asiaand the east coast of Australia had becomeextinct.
The fish are believed to spend the first four tofive years of their life in the river before movingout to sea and can live to more than 40 years oldand grow to more than 7m long.

People in East Kimberleyare being urged to put
their hand up to join theirlocal Volunteer EmergencyService (VES) unit.
VES units at Wyndham andHalls Creek urgently requiremore volunteers in a bid toeffectively service the outbacktowns.
FESA East KimberleyDistrict Manager TonyStevenson said the two unitsaimed to double the number ofvolunteers on their books dur-ing June and July.
"We need people to put up
their hands to literally helptheir own communities," MrStevenson said.
"Wyndham and Halls Creekare very isolated and when anemergency happens theseplaces are too far away fromother Kimberley towns toexpect to get help quickly."
VES volunteers are trained torespond to a variety of inci-dents such as road crash res-cues, cliff rescues, flooding, bushfires, house fires andcyclones.
"In larger towns these typesof incidents are normally han-
dled by volunteers from differ-ent groups such as the StateEmergency Service, Bush FireService and Volunteer Fire andRescue Service," MrStevenson said.
"But because Wyndham andHalls Creek have small popula-tions from which to source vol-unteers all these different serv-ices are rolled into one unit."
Mr Stevenson said volunteerswere able to meet people, learnnew skills and develop leader-ship confidence while makinga contribution to their commu-nity.
"The skills and training youobtain can often be useful inyour work or other areas ofyour life and you get a lot ofsatisfaction out of helping peo-ple in your community," hesaid.
People interested in joiningshould contact Tony Stevensonon 1800 225 329.
More information on the VEScan be found by visiting thevolunteer recruitment sectionon the FESA website atwww.fesa.wa.gov.au.

The Department of Health has urged peopleliving and holidaying in the Kimberley
region of Western Australia to take extra careagainst mosquito bites, following detection of thepotentially fatal mosquito-borne Murray Valleyencephalitis (MVE) virus for the first time thisseason.
The Department of Health's surveillance program(undertaken by The University of Western Australia)has detected activity of Murray Valley encephalitis(MVE) virus in several locations in the Kimberley.Kunjin virus also continues to be detected.
Department of Health Medical Entomologist SueHarrington said rainfall during May had resulted inpopulations of biting mosquitoes that could be carry-ing these viruses.
"Murray Valley encephalitis virus and Kunjin virusare both carried by mosquitoes, and while the risk ofbeing infected and becoming unwell is low, the ill-nesses can be severe and people should take sensibleprecautions to avoid mosquito bites," Ms Harringtonsaid.
"Initial symptoms of MVE include fever, drowsi-ness, headache, stiff neck, nausea and dizziness andpeople experiencing these symptoms should seekmedical advice quickly. In severe cases, people mayexperience fits, lapse into a coma, may be left withpermanent brain damage or die.
"In young children, fever might be the only earlysign, so parents should see their doctor if concerned, and particularly if their child experiences drowsi-ness, floppiness, irritability, poor feeding, or generaldistress.
"Infection with Kunjin virus can cause symptomsthat are similar to Ross River virus disease, such asswollen and aching joints, fever and rash. Howeverin rare cases, Kunjin, like MVE, can cause moresevere symptoms which include headache, neckstiffness, fever, delirium and coma."
Ms Harrington said people most likely to be affect-ed by MVE or Kunjin virus were newcomers toaffected regions, such as babies, young children, tourists or new employees, but anyone experiencingthese symptoms should seek medical advice quickly.
"Transmission of other mosquito-borne viruses isalso continuing in the north, with 13 cases of RossRiver virus disease and Barmah Forest virus diseasereported from the Kimberley in the past threemonths," she said.
"There are no specific cures or vaccines for MVE,Kunjin, Ross River or Barmah Forest viruses so it isvery important that people take care to prevent beingbitten by mosquitoes."
The warning particularly applies to people under-taking outdoor activities during the evening andnight in coastal and inland areas of the Kimberleyregion, but also in other parts of the northwest ifmosquitoes are abundant.
Ms Harrington said controlling mosquitoes in mostrural regions of WA was generally not possiblebecause of the large size and inaccessibility of natu-ral mosquito breeding habitat.

special musical treat at the Shire Stage:a performance by the wonderful percus-sion group Tetrafide. TETRAFIDE
From glockenspiels to garbage bins tomagical rainsticks Tetrafide kept the audi-ence mesmerized with an incredible arrayof instruments. The Tetrafide tour has takenin a large number of towns and communi-ties across the Kimberley and the show willbe on the road for 3 months in total. Those who were lucky enough to catch theshow raved about the performance. Wethank the Halls Creek District High Schoolfor making this concert possible andMusica Viva for bringing such great funmusical acts to our town.

Round eight saw the Cats continue their good form againstthe Demons in Halls Creek on the weekend. Kicking a hugescore the Cats won comfortably over the Demons who bat-tled hard and had a few players that stood out. Stanley,Dwayne and James were the best players for the Cats whowon most of the ball in the middle and were also dominant upforward.
The Roos were keen to come away with a win against theHawks and started well with an attacking forward set up.They lead at quarter time but from then on the Hawks overran the Roos in all areas of the ground. Some good perform-ances by Murray Gordon, Clinton Cox & Lee Till wereenough to see the Hawks run out winners by 23 points.
