centuries ago as a Pa-gan festival among the Celts of Ireland and Great Britain. Fast-forward a few hundred years to the present day Chippewa Valley where Halloween has become a night when kids stuff their faces with processed sugar and grownups dress up and parade around like idiots. In short, Halloween has become more awesome than ever before. Halloween Hollow, a spooky entertainment event for both young people and families, has crept its way into the Chippewa Valley in hopes of becoming a standard part of our

city’s annual Halloween entertainment. Halloween Hollow features several different attractions that promise not only a truly eerie experience for those chasing a thrill, but also plenty of daylight activities for children and families such as face painting, inflat-able jungle gyms, and pumpkin patches. This venue offers more than your standard haunted houses – its array of activities attract every age group and ranges from light-hearted pumpkin patches in the day to dark, terrifying trails of terror into the moonlight.

If the day time activities are more what you’re looking for, then the Enchanted Forest and/or Pumpkin Town (“Fun by Day”) are probably where you’ll find yourself; these areas are geared towards children up to ten years old and is where you’ll find the most child-friendly environment and least “scary” setting. This is also where you will find the most stuff to do for the kids such as the ones mentioned earlier as well as costumed enter-tainers and jelly bean bingo. Since a lot of Halloween venues aren’t always the most kid friendly, this is a refreshing setup perfect for families trying to enjoy the spooky season together.

For the more courageous, daring crowd, Halloween Hollow offers entertainment into the dark with entrance into Frightmare Farm (“Fun by Night”) which includes the Corridor of the Corpse, Trail of Terror, Haunted Hills Estate and over 50 animatron-ics that will creep you out as much as the last Stanley Kubrick movie you watched. If you are looking for a new place to indulge in your horrifying Halloween guilty pleasure, besides the usual haunted house,

this is the place to get your fix of all the zombies, vampires, terror, and gore that you crave in October.

This chilling festival has many sponsors around the Chippewa Valley, some of which being Kwik Trip stores, WAXX radio, and Sacred Heart Hospital. Through its partnership with Kwik Trip, Halloween Hollow has gotten close replicas of the original cars from the TV show, The Munsters, to make appearanc-es at different Eau Claire Kwik Trips on Wednesdays through October (except actual Halloween, ironical-ly). The venue says of the cars, “These Monster Cars

are close replicas to the original Munster Cars used in the televi-sion series “The Munsters”. The Monster Coach and Screamin’ Coffin cars were built by Randall Landwehr, and have been con-tracted throughout the US. They have appeared at national hal-loween shows and events as well as in parades, weddings and the 30th Anniversary of The Munsters in Boston in 1996.” You can find the Munster cars on Wednesday October 17th, 2012 from 4-6 PM with LIVE Radio Remote by: WIAL I-94 94.1FM at Kwik Trip (#472) 1130 W. MacArthur Eau

Claire, WI and Wednesday October 24th, 2012 from 4-6 PM with a LIVE Radio Remote by WAXX 104.5FM at Kwik Trip (#633) at 2715 Golf Road in Eau Claire, WI. You can get tickets for Halloween Hollow for $19 for adults (Oct. 11th - Oct. 28th Includes Admission to Frightmare Farm), $13 for children ages 3-11 and Children 2 and under are free. You can receive dis-counts on tickets via coupons from your local Kwik Trip and parking is free.

Adding even more to its allure and distinction from a typical haunted house is the food offered at the Scary-Oke Café and Freaky Franks Café. Both of which will serve up classic festival food like burgers, brats, chili, and caramel apples for reasonable prices.

Since this is their first year in Eau Claire, Halloween Hollow is hoping for tons of community support. If you’ve been to Country Jam, you’re one step ahead of the game since Halloween Hollow is located on the Country Jam USA Whispering Pines Campgrounds (now called Road Buddies Campground) a half mile West of the Fanny Hill Inn and Dinner Theatre. This spooky fair is for everyone from college kids to fami-lies with little monsters and is open through October so get out there so we can welcome these creepy char-acters for Halloweens to come.

former local writes novel that combines zombies with .... the Titanic? By anna fiELd & LindsEy QuinniEs

TITANIC TERROR

as an avid Halloween lover and frequent reader, I can’t imagine a better October release book than a novel about Zombies…on the Titanic. Deck Z: The Titanic is a new book (their first

novel) by semi-local authors Chris Pauls and Matt Solomon that chronicles the story of German scientist Theodor Weiss who discovers a strange plague that ravages its victims, transforming them into monsters hungry for flesh. Weiss’s studies show that there may yet be a cure, but when he discovers the military plans to use the disease as a weapon, he procures the only sample and heads for America. He may be safe from the German army, but he finds himself aboard the Titanic.

When asked how their book fits into the popular niche of zombie fiction, “Deck Z definitely draws upon the existing zombie canon, yet we hope it adds a couple nuances to the genre. Using a historical aspect is a good touchstone to get readers interested, but ultimately the story should supersede the hook for the thing to really hum.”

They also wanted to avoid retelling other zombie stories, so they focused their research on the Titanic and built the zombie part of the story in a way that was true to their story. The authors did exhaustive research to make sure they had the layout of the ship

and the life on the ship correct. The way that the authors organize the book is into three stages with dates and times marking the beginning of each chapter and is told from a third person perspective.

Even if I think it’s pure awesome, some might think it is a bit strange to place zombies in the setting of the Titanic for a novel. When asked ‘why?’ the authors said, “We liked the idea of innocent passengers being trapped with nowhere to run (or swim). It was our way of introducing an “Alien”-like claustrophobia to the proceedings. Also, the 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking has the event back in the public consciousness.” The duo worked on the novel for just over a year before being ready for its release.

In regards to the publication of the novel, the authors continue with, “We’re excited. We think there’s more here than meets the eye, and that readers will appreciate the story’s detail and ultimately, heart.” You can get this “unsinkable, undead” novel on Amazon, Kindle, and local book stores.

BEST NEIGHBORHOODSto TRICK or TREAT?

if you’re looking for treats and maybe some tricks, Eau Claire has some great options for neighborhoods to take the kiddos. In past

years of our Best Of The Chippewa Valley poll, the Third Ward and Eastside hill have both been popular spots, with the Third Ward winning in 2009 and Eastside Hill winning in 2011. Witches, ghosts, and princesses may end up with a few cavities after visiting the Third Ward, known for handing out king-sized chocolately goodness. East Hill, on the other hand, has more homes per square mile, making it easier to run away with quite a haul. princeton valley has also been known for having quality candy, perhaps due to the large houses it boasts. And lastly, don’t forget about trick-or-treating downtown in the afternoon. Wherever you go, you’re likely to gather a good candy crop. –bb
