Halloween is a great time to have fun andenjoy playful activities with your children.However, with all the excitement, childrencan forget safety rules, especially when they’retrick-or-treating. The following tips can helpkeep your kids safe.

Falls are the leading cause of injuries among children onHalloween, due to long costumes and the use of masks.Source: National Safety Council, June 2004

Motor vehicle-related pedestrian deaths are four timeshigher on Halloween than on any other night of the yearfor children ages 5 to 14 years.Source: Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Centers for DiseaseControl & Prevention, October 1997

Studies done by the National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration in the United States show that up to40 per cent of Halloween traffic fatalities were alcoholrelated.Source: Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, 2004

Follow road safety rules: walk, don’t run; cross at corners;use sidewalks; and don’t criss-cross.

Walk facing traffic. Don’t use bicycles, skates, or skateboards.

No destructive pranks.

Visit only neighborhood houses and plan the route.

Motorists should exercise extra caution, especially whenbacking in or out of driveways. Go slow, and NO alcohol.

If your child needs to go to the washroom, instruct them toreturn home.

Children should carry identification and either a cell phoneor change for a pay phone in case of emergency.

General Safety...General Safety...Supervision is key. Most injuries are predictable andpreventable. Here are some recent statistics.

Children should not wear clothing that is too long or tooloose (hem should be several inches above the ground).Avoid oversized shoes.

Secure scarves, hats and wigs so child can see clearly.

Use fluorescent tape and bright material on costumes.

Costumes should not be made of flimsy material.

Use flame resistant costumes, wigs, and beards.

Costume accessories such as knives and swords should be softand flexible.

Use makeup or face paint instead of a mask if possible.

If using a mask, choose one with large eye holes.

Dress children warmly. Use layers.

When trick-or-treating, children should be polite and say“thank you”.

Always use flashlights.

Only go to well lit houses.

Do not go into stranger’s homes or vehicles and alwaysuse the front door.

Children under 9 years should go out with an adult.

Older children should “trick-or-treat” in a group, but parentsshould establish a return time and know their route.Children should wear a watch.

Do not leave pets outside or loose in the yard.

This is a great time to buy fresh batteries for yoursmoke alarms.

Candy...Candy...

Feed children before they go out. Give them atrick-or-treat goody-bag to take along.

Tell them not to eat any treats they have collected untilthey are checked at home.

Watch for treats such as gum, peanuts and hard candythat may be choking hazards for young children. Childrenunder 3 years should not eat hard candy.

Allow commercially wrapped goodies only - nothinghomemade unless you are sure of the source. Check allpackaging for tampering.

Throw out all fruit if there are visible signs of damage tothe skin, unless you are sure there are no pins or razorblades inside.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Watch for treats that contain known food allergies for yourchild.

Tell children not to pick up any candy off the ground.

Do not overload extension cords.

Young children should not carve pumpkins. Have themdraw a face on the pumpkin instead.

Use flashlights instead of candles inside carved pumpkins.

Keep the outside lights on.

Remove obstacles in the yard, on steps and porches.
