Context
• Halloween takes place on October 31st.
• It was originally a religious festival.
• Celtic (Kel-Tic) people from Scotland and Ireland
believed that the dead would return to earth on
Halloween (All Hallow’s Eve)
• Celtic people used to light bonfires and wear costumes to scare away ghosts.
• In the 19th Century many Irish people moved to America.
• Halloween was introduced to American culture.
Trick or Treating
• Trick or Treating is a popular Halloween tradition.
• Groups of children dress up in scary costumes.
• They go from house to house to ask for a ‘treat’ – normally sweets.
• If they are not given a treat then they perform a ‘trick’.

Pumpkin carving
• Many people carve pumpkins on Halloween.
• They place a candle inside the pumpkin.
• These are also known as ‘Jack-O’-Lanterns’.

• People ‘dress up’as many different characters on Halloween.
