Denise Vey Voda ’72
Denise attended Colorado State University, where as a member of the varsity swimming team she was went to the Women’s Collegiate Nationals for three years. She and her sister Debra ’76 led the crusade to lobby then-governor Hugh Cary and the State of New York Parks and Recreation for women’s right to serve as ocean lifeguards and earn equal pay. Despite rigorous testing and requirement adjustments, Denise and her sister passed and became the first women to serve as ocean guards in 1977.
Denise had a lifelong dream to attend dental school. Despite being declined initially, she reapplied to New York University, while attending Adelphi University for a Master’s degree in Community Public Health. During that time, she coached swimming and gymnastics at Hewlett High School while building a strategy to be accepted to NYU. She brought the director of admissions a bagel and a cup of coffee every morning for four months, promising that it would only end when she was accepted. When she was finally offered the last seat in the class of 1982, she gladly took it.
From NYU, Denise went on to Flushing Hospital as a general practice resident and then to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to specialize in Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. She was honored to be involved with the team that identified over 3,000 remains from the World Trade Center attacks.
She and her husband of almost 30 years, Robert West, are in practice together in Oyster Bay. They have two sons: Cody and Morgan. Throughout the years she and her husband have mentored many St. Mary’s students.
Jim Volkland ’57
After graduating St. Mary’s, Jim attended St John’s University on a basketball scholarship. While a sophomore at St. John’s, he was asked to coach the St. Mary’s freshman basketball team by Brother Cletus, FMS.Jim taught at Carey High School and coached freshman and JV basketball at St. Mary’s. In 1962, he accepted a teaching position at St. Mary’s and became the varsity basketball and baseball coach. He established highly successful summer sports programs.
He served as assistant principal for discipline from 1968-69. Seeking a return to the classroom, Jim accepted the position of history chairman and was instrumental in establishing its advanced placement program.
Jim coached St. Mary’s to three Long Island Catholic Baseball Championships and reached the semi-final round in basketball three times. He also won three baseball and two basketball Coach of the Year awards.
He left St. Mary’s in 1975 to coach at Newfield High School and finished his coaching tenure at Stony Brook University. Jim resides in Floral Park with his wife of 40 years, Veronica. They have three children: Jim, Kerry, and Matthew and three grandchildren.

Special remembrance from the Boys Varsity Basketball Team of 1968-1969 who probably worked harder and “busted” more than any team who ever compiled a 0-17 record which we have affectionately referred to over the years since as “Our Championship Season.”
