space to the digital one was crucial. “Any kind of hardship – natural disasters, global pandemics – requires discipline and creativity,” says Purcell. “Everyone doubled down on figuring out how to remove barriers of access and serve people everywhere.” The transition started just four days after closure with the introduction of website feature Watch And Listen, which offers full runs of programs previously recorded at the museum. Shortly thereafter, live programming was shifted from the Ford Theater to social media. Since Watch And Listen debuted, almost 80,000 people have participated, with more than 150 new items available to stream for free here. While the Museum had an online presence before, the challenge – or as Purcell saw it, opportunity – was getting back to a live programming space. “What do you do to maintain service

and stay consistent?” questioned Purcell. “Because we know people are going to be at home. That demand is going to be great, if not greater than ever.” Some of the museum’s most popular programming centers on songwriting. With that in mind, the team made the decision to transition Songwriter Session to Instagram Live beginning April 14. “That was the first time we had ever done traditional weekly programs exclusively via technology,” Purcell says. “The technology allows you to, essentially, merge a video call with another artist or songwriter from

remote sites. We could all be safe and conversational and keep the programs going.” Since its inception, artists including Dierks Bentley, Don Schlitz and Caylee Hammack, and more than 30,000 viewers have participated. “From chart-topping artists to Country Music Hall of Fame members, songwriters have stepped up to continue carrying the programming torch,” Purcell says. Those volunteer efforts are key to sustaining the institution’s existing audiences and building new ones through educational programs. Home Schooled: Words & Music At Home was created as an online extension of the non-profit’s flagship music education program. A step-by-step guide (downloadable here) through the lyric-writing process and a supplementary lesson about how to use Garage Band and set your song to music give at-home viewers applicable information. “When we introduced this, we engaged a number of artists, explaining how these online resources work through weekly programs held in April and May. During these Instagram Live sessions, artists applied some of the Words & Music At Home resources to their own songs to show folks how they make tactical

that can stem from shared services and resources, as well as the potential for group medical insurance and savings on similar benefits and HR services,” notes Stone. “But some of the things I am most excited about are the opportunities in the spaces of revenue generation and digital services.” Long Division: The creation of a centralized digital services division will offer members web, social, streaming and other products for use by stations and clients. “Ideally, I would like to hire Account Executives for our digital services team that are not from the world of radio but are directly from the digital space and have worked with Google and similar companies,” Stone says. I’m looking to bring the best of the best in to raise the profile of our

creative decisions [while] songwriting, and of course, they shared some music, too,” Purcell says. Artists including Tenille Townes, Walker Hayes, Carly Pearce, Matthew Ramsey, Blanco Brown, Brett Young and Molly Tuttle have participated. Educational efforts are actually reaching more people online than they did in person. In 2019, 1,450 programs served 107,000 people. With reimagined live programs over the past five months, the museum has already reached 125,000 people. Another silver lining? “We can really get some new metrics and senses of who is engaging with programs and where they’re from, which is great,” says Purcell. “We want to keep the museum’s work top of mind among the country music community’s philanthropic priorities, so we can continue to be a lighthouse for this music we love so much and keep serving global audiences,” Purcell sums. stations and bring us to the table for national buys.” Beyond digital, on-air revenue generation is also a focus. “It’s difficult seeing money that used to come in via national spot buys segue to network, as I’m working to clear spots for zero dollars that previously served to benefit our bottom line,” notes Stone. “Working as a collective to secure those national dollars is a top priority.”

Better service for local direct clients is also an IBA goal. Stone notes that approximately 85% of his stations’ current business comes from local-direct, non-agency clients. “Those clients don’t want or care about information from Nielsen; they want to know who our listeners are and how best to target them,” he says. “Working with high-level data experts to better define and target our listeners and give that information to

A day in the self-isolated life of Round Here Records’ RaeLynn: I always forget my mask, even though I have to wear it every day. It’s also changing the way we’re approaching releases. Going virtual has been … different. But, a positive is that I get to spend more time with my husband, which has been awesome. I recently got a Peloton bike, so my routine has been trying to at least get on that thing for 30 minutes every morning. It helps me stay grounded through the craziness. I have two dogs and a husband, but he travels a lot. The only thing that keeps me from going crazy on my dogs is the fact that I love them. They’ve gotten on my nerves, because when I leave, they get so sad, and I think it’s because I’ve been home so much. I love to organize. I didn’t think I would enjoy organizing as much as I do, but I genuinely love to recreate a closet. There’s something so satisfying about opening it and knowing exactly where everything is.

At first, I thought quarantine was going to hinder my creativity, because I enjoy the writing process and being in the room with the person you’re creating with. But there’s something about creating in my own home that has been rewarding. Knowing I can actually do that in my own space has really helped me. I go live every Thursday — or I try to — and it’s been one of the best things for me, because I need to have that fan experience. Know there are still people out there that want music and need it just as much as I do, I’ve really enjoyed that. I’m currently bingeing Friday Night Lights. I know I’m late to the party, but I love it because it’s about Texas football. And Yellowstone. My go-to quarantine snack has been Truly Lemonade, which is not really a snack. But it has calories, so we’re just going to say that. My silver lining is snacking. I love to snack, first of all. The fridge is my best friend. Secondly, I can actually hold my liquor. I never thought I could, but

quarantine has made me a better drinker. I’m excited for the parties I’m going to go to after this, because I know I’m not going to get hammered as quickly.

[clients] can help our sales teams across the country.” Stone notes that the listener data can also be used to target regional-direct clients as well as agency buys, and can help IBA station members open new lines of revenue based on real-time listener composition data. Big Winners: As for programming, Stone looks to use similar listener data pools for music research and callout to build a network of IBA station data. Additionally, shared resources can be used to implement programming and promotions on a national level. “If I have 3,000 stations that each chip in $100 to a joint account, that can fund several national-level on-air giveaways,” explains Stone. “Corporate radio has been running similar contesting for years. No, you may not get a listener from your market, but with proper execution, a small, independent station can sound larger than life on-air with top dollar giveaways.” Stone also looks to the IBA to pool talent, creating a talent bank for voicing spots, fill-in work and covering dayparts that may currently be unmanned or helmed by nationally syndicated talent. “Our stations and markets have fantastic talent, so instead of paying corporate radio to utilize their programming, why not showcase the amazing on-air personalities we have?” questions Stone. “This is another shared resource that can raise the profile of talent while helping reduce costs for our membership and reduce the need to rely on corporations.” Drive To Succeed: “I have personally seen how an association like this benefited the auto industry,” says Renda

Broadcasting CEO Tony Renda, who also serves on the IBA Board. “As an owner of stations in six markets, I know my strength is limited, but if I am part of a group of 3,000-plus stations, I am stronger; I have a voice. If I am part of a group that can offer a sophisticated national digital buying opportunity for advertisers, I am stronger. If I am part of a group that creates its own unique programming, I am stronger. If we can reduce my expenses and increase my revenue, I am stronger! The IBA is not a replacement for the NAB or RAB, but rather one that will enhance the tools we have now, and by doing so, will enhance our bottom lines.” The IBA is still accepting membership inquiries, and Stone notes that by filling out the interest form (here), stations are not obligated to join. “We have a strong membership base at this point, and our board is already working on passing bylaws and approving the business plan,” Stone says. “But we welcome all inquiries and are excited to meet new independent broadcasters.” The official IBA website will launch soon here. A day in the self-isolated life of Hubbard WUBE/Cincinnati afternoon personality Jesse Tack:

Quarantine hasn’t affected daily life much for me. I’m still lucky enough to go into work every day. Other than some slightly shorter work hours, it’s mostly business as usual. Although, it was pretty rough for a while not being able to get a haircut!

Since I’m scheduling a bit more music from home, I tend to start my day first thing by editing logs for an hour or so. I’m talking about right after I wake up, so that’s typically around 6:30am. It’s nice scheduling from home, because I can catch up on the morning news at the same time.

Once I get to work – usually between 1pm and 2pm – I work on music a bit more and spend time prepping my show. I’m on the air from 3pm until 7pm before I head home. Sometimes, I do a little music scheduling at night, too. It has worked out pretty well balancing things between home and the office.

I’ve also been able to stay connected to friends and family via social media, and

it has helped me keep my thumb on the pulse of what’s going on day-to-day with local openings, restrictions and the like.

It’s just me and my dog, Jackson, so he’s getting a lot more walks these days. We go on two to three walks on a really good day, so it’s exercise for both of us. It’s a win-win!

I haven’t developed any new hobbies, but I’ve certainly devoted more time to the hobbies I already had, namely exercising. I’ve accumulated enough new workout equipment at home over the past few months that I guarantee I get more workouts in every week. It’s probably the most focused I’ve been on my workout goals.

I’m listening to more podcasts than I ever have. I love to learn, so some of my favorites currently are Stuff You Should Know, The Daily and 99% Invisible.

I always have peanuts around the house, and if I’m feeling hungry, I can eat a bowl of cereal any time of day. It’s my weakness!

I’ve found this pandemic has been a

great reminder to us of how important our jobs are in situations like this. At times, we really are the voice for people and the source for getting breaking news out to listeners. Also, it has allowed me to flex my creative muscles in ways I haven’t been able to in the past. I’ve enjoyed that challenge.

“I am an effective and calm communicator, the ‘voice of reason’ and a ‘go-to’ person when answers are needed, and situations need to be explained and solutions disbursed. I am professional and courteous in my dealings with listeners, advertisers and the general public, and I am willing to learn, experiment and find solutions to challenges when they arise. I am always on task and consistently on time. My ability to train and develop talent set me apart, and it has always been my goal to make on-air talent better personalities. If you want to attract top talent, you must first create a culture that top talent want to be a part of, and it all starts with trust.”
