HalalfoodisfoodwhichadherestoIslamiclawandisthereforeacceptableforMuslimstoeat.Halalfoodlawsspecifynotonlywhattypesoffoodsandbeveragesareallowedtobeeaten,butalsohowthefoodisprepared.

Therefore,Halalchicken,soldinAustralia,hasbeenprocessedandpreparedaccordingtoIslamiclaw.

Inpractice,inAustraliathismeansthefollowing:•aprayerisspokenatthecommencementofslaughteringintheprocessingplant;•thepersonsupervisingtheslaughteringprocessmustbeofMuslimfaith;and•theprocessingplanthastobeaccreditedbythelocalMuslimcleric.

TheactualprocessofproducingHalalornonHalalchickensisindistinguishable,inparticularallchickens,whetherHalalornot,arestunnedandkilledinidenticalways.ObservingHalalrequirementsdoesnothaveanyimpactontheanimals’welfare.

BecausethephysicalprocessisthesameforbothHalalandnon-Halalproductsapprovedprocessingplantsmayprocessawholeday’sbirdsobservingtheHalalrequirements,evenifonlysomeoftheproductwillberequiredtobeHalalcertified.

ByhavingsomeoftheirfacilitiesaccreditedforHalalslaughter,theindustryisabletomeetthedemandforHalalproductsfromboththelocalcommunityaswellasfromsomeexportmarkets.
