REVUES: Fall Festival

FAll FeSTIvAl – Teacher Edition 3

THe SCRIPT

Adult: Good evening (good afternoon), everyone, and welcome to (name of school). You may have noticed a chill in the air these past few mornings; the days are getting shorter and Jack Frost has touched all the trees with his icy paint brush, turning the leaves to gold. What a perfect time to celebrate the glorious autumn season. What a perfect night (day) for a Fall Festival! Yes, Jack Frost, that little rascal, has put ice on the ponds and …

Child 1: (approaching Adult, pulling on his coat and interrupting) Uh…excuse me, (fill in the adult’s name), I hate to have to tell you this, but there is no such person as Jack Frost.

Adult: What!?

Child 2: (approaching the other two) That’s right. We learned about the seasons in science.

Child 3: You see, when the earth tilts on its axis, it causes the Northern hemisphere to be farther away from the sun, resulting in shorter days and colder temperatures.

Child 4: That’s what causes autumn…not Jack Frost.

Adult: But…but…what about the leaves changing color? How does that happen?

Child 5: Sunlight helps trees make food with some green stuff called chlorophyll.

Child 6: When the days get short, there’s less light and the chlorophyll goes away, so the leaves change color.

Child 7: Everyone knows that! (to the audience) Right?

Child 8: And everyone knows the very best thing about autumn is…

All: (shouting) …jumping in the leaves!

SoNG 1: AUTUMN DAYS ARe HeRe

Adult: That was great! Now that I think about it, I remember learning about photosynthesis just a few short years ago when I was in elementary school. (pausing, putting his hand to his ear to listen) I think I hear something. It sounds like…no, it couldn’t be. It sounds like a parade. Why would anyone want to have a parade now? It’s not even close to the Fourth of July!

Child 9: (insert adult’s name), the parade is for Veterans Day.

Adult: Ohhh! Of course. We celebrate Veterans Day to thank all the people who have served in our country’s military. They have given so much to us; let’s give them a big “thank you.”

All: (with sincerity) Thank you, veterans! (All turn and point off stage right.) Look! Here comes the band! They’re here! Hooray! etc. ad. lib.

“Y” for Yes!Narration by John JacobsonI’m standing here with my arms in the air. No need to point. No need to stare. If you’re wondering why my arms are high, I’m standing here like the letter “Y.”

Words and Music by John JacobsonY is the letter that I like the best! Y is the letter that I like the best! Y is the letter that I like the best, ‘Cause Y E S spells YES.

Y is the letter that I like the best! Y is the letter that I like the best! Y is the letter that I like the best, ‘Cause Y E S spells YES.

YES I can! YES I will! Y can give a speller such a thrill! That is why I like Y, ‘Cause Y E S spells YES! Oh Y E S spells YES! ’Cause Y E S spells YES!

Give Me a “Z”Narration by John JacobsonWe’ve Alphabopped our alphabet, And never even broke a sweat. We started off at A B C, At last we come to the letter “Z.”

Give me a Z Z Z and I can ZIP ZIP ZIP Around the ZOO ZOO ZOO with you. Give me a Z Z Z and I can ZIP ZIP ZIP Around the ZOO ZOO ZOO with you!

VerSe oneSome days I just can’t sit still,Never could, never will. And I know that I got nothin’ to lose.Always starts a way down deep,Up my spine, it starts to creep.Gotta get up and grab my dancin’ shoes.

refrainDancin’ shoes! Dancin’ shoes!Music’s blarin’, I’m wearin’ my dancin’ shoes.Dancin’ shoes! Dancin’ shoes!Goodness knows gotta cover my toes!I’ll be kickin’ doin’ the Funky Chicken. No barefootin’, I’m puttin’ on my dancin’ shoes.

VerSe twoI see that you’ve got it too!Want to know what to do?I’ve got a way to shake away the blues. If your face is in a frown,Got a smile that’s upside down.Gotta get up and grab your dancin’ shoes.

refrainDancin’ shoes!

Platforms, sandles, clogs or taps,Lace up, buckle, strap or snaps!Patent leather to match your pants,Hightop tennies gonna make you dance!Dance, dance, dance, dance!Make you dance!

STUDENT ARTICLE

The original purchaser of this book has permission to reproduce this article for instructional use only. Any other use is strictly prohibited.

Austria is the land of Mozart and mountains, and of castles and waltzes. Its beautiful alps, or mountains, were made famous in the classic film, The Sound of Music. Today, tourists flock to the old-world city of Salzburg, in part to see the places made famous by the film. But the country is much more than a pretty backdrop. Austria is the crossroads of Europe. It is where Eastern Europe, and countries like the Czech Republic and Hungary, meets Western Europe, and countries like Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

The history of the land itself dates back to ancient times. Celtic people from the British Isles, Romans, Bavarians, Huns and Slavs are among the people who once controlled the area now known as Austria. Today Austrians speak German with a lilting accent and their culture is closely tied to that of Germany. The name Austria means eastern state or eastern empire in German.

The Danube River, which flows through eastern Austria, is a major trade route for all of Europe. Cities and towns grew up on the river’s busy banks about 800 years ago. One of those cities is the beautiful city of Vienna, known for its architecture, music and art. Vienna was once the capitol of the entire Austro-Hungarian empire, which combined the present-day Austria and Hungary and several smaller countries to form an enormous nation.

In addition to Mozart, Austria was home to composers Franz Joseph Haydn and Franz Schubert. Although he was born in Germany, Beethoven chose to make Vienna his home. One of the country’s most popular musicians was composer Johann Strauss Jr., who was known as the Waltz King for the many flowing waltzes he wrote in the late 1800s. The waltz is still an important part of Austrian identity. The song “Ach, du lieber Augustin” is a waltz, but it dates back to the year 1679, when a terrible plague struck the city of Vienna. There are several versions of the story that is told about the song’s creation, most of which are pretty similar. Apparently a musician named Augustin was known for playing and singing popular tunes in Vienna. One night after an evening of entertaining, Augustin stumbled into a ditch on his way home. He fell fast asleep in the ditch. With the plague claiming hundreds of lives every day in the city, wagons rolled through the streets at all hours to pick up those who had died. One of these wagons picked up the sleeping Augustin and carted him off to the cemetery. Eventually Augustin woke up and asked the cemetery workers where he was. The workers were scared out of their wits by the sight of a “dead” man sitting up and talking. The wild story circulated quickly and made the musician even more popular. The song’s lyrics tell of the losses and hardships during the plague. Augustin, his music and this story are still remembered in Vienna today, where a statue of him still stands.

The Sound of AustriaAch, du lieber AugustinLesson Plan by Bernice Kirkland

Objectives (with National Standards) • Perform on percussion instruments with the

song (NS 2) • Play and improvise an accompaniment

pattern (NS 3) • Read music notation and lyrics (NS 5) • Learn a song from another country, along with

the culture, geography and related historical stories of that country (Austria) (NS 9)

Materials • Copies of Article and Singer Songsheet • CD Tr. 3 (with vocals); Tr. 4 (accompaniment);

Tr. 5 (pronunciation guide) • Board or overhead projector (write the words

“Time Signatures” “March” “Waltz” and 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 on the board or a transparency)

• World map or globe, to show Austria and your own city

• Unpitched percussion instruments (drums, tambourines, triangles, rhythm sticks, or others)

START 1. Begin with a brief discussion of time signatures

in music. SAY Most of you have been to a football game and have heard the band play the school fight song or a march. Is the tempo fast or slow? (fast) These pieces are written in 2/4 time signature or “cut” time because we all have two feet and it is easy to step to the beat when there are just two beats in each measure.

Show the different time signatures on the board or overhead transparency and review the meaning of the top and bottom numbers (example: two beats in a measure; the quarter note gets one beat)

2. Ask the students to use any body percussion (pat thighs, stamp feet, snap fingers, etc.) and play along as you tap a steady beat using a drum or metronome. Then have students stand and “march” to the beat, putting their left foot down on beat one and their right foot down on beat two in each measure. You might use a recorded march or play a march pattern on the keyboard or piano.

3. SAY This same beat works in the 4/4 time signature, because there are still an even number of beats in each measure. (Review what the top and bottom numbers mean.) But what will happen when we change to a 3/4 time signature in a song? (our feet will get messed up; we might trip; now there are three beats in every measure) SAY Usually, a song written in 3/4 time signature is called a “waltz.” Many famous waltzes came from the country of Austria, and several of our greatest composers lived there: Johann Strauss, Jr. was known as the “Waltz King,” also Haydn, Schubert and Mozart.

DEVELOP 1. Demonstrate a waltz tempo on the keyboard or

piano, or play a small part of a waltz, such as “The Blue Danube.” Demonstrate how to “glide” on beat one and bring both feet close together on beats two and three. Then ask students to stand and move in their own space to the waltz.

2. Show the location of Austria using a world map or globe, and compare it to your home city. Some students may be confused about Austria and Australia. Show both and clarify if necessary.

3. Hand out copies of the article “The Sound of Austria.” Read silently or aloud, and briefly discuss the story of Augustin. Then hand out copies of the song “Ach, du lieber Augustin.”

4. Model the reading of the song words to show how the plague took the lives of friends and family members, so that only Augustin and his wife were left. Play CD track 3. Have the students sing along with the recording. If you wish, you may use the Pronunciation Guide (CD track 5) to assist the students.

5. Invite the students to choose a partner and work together to create a waltz tempo accompaniment with two different percussion instruments (example: partner 1 plays the drum on beat one and partner 2 plays the triangle on beat two and three; OR partner 1 plays the tambourine on beat one and partner 2 plays the rhythm sticks on beats two and three, etc.)

After the partners play the song together once, then switch instruments and parts. If you prefer, divide the class into two groups with two different instruments, and have Group 1 play beat one and Group 2 play beats two and three in waltz tempo to accompany the song.

Filled with spectacular costume and set opportunities, or even more simply staged, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Junior offers a great opportunity to bring your entire school together for Broadway entertainment at its best. Songs include: Belle, Home, Gaston, Be Our Guest, Something There, Human Again, Beauty and the Beast, The Mob Song, Finale.09971206 ShowKit .......................................................................................................................................................................................................$550.0008749545 Audio Sampler ................................................................................................................................................................................................$10.0008749547 Super Sampler ...............................................................................................................................................................................................$15.00
