KAPATAGAN BRANCH continues to expand its services amidst the global crisis.

As a matter of fact, it has opened its satellite office in Aurora in order to reach and serve its clients.

KAPATAGAN BRANCH EXPANDS SERVICES AMIDST GLOBAL CRISIS

1st Valley Bank is now a proud partner of the Social Security System (SSS).

Having been accredited by the main SSS office in Manila last February 2009, the nineteen branches of the bank has started accepting payments on 1 March 2009.

    1VB NOW ACCEPTS SSS PAYMENTS

Prior to acceptance of payments, the Bank subjected its staff including Assistant Branch Managers to the necessary training and orientation.

As a result, the operation had flowed smoothly with clients responding positively on the service.

When every financial institution dreaded the economic crisis, Baroy Branch can only get bigger and better. As a matter of fact, all portfolios of the branch have increased significantly, solid attestation of the continued trust and confidence of its clients.

The Branch has also recently added one (1) teller devoted to Gold & Gems and other services offered through the Bank like money transfers and remittances as well as mobile banking.

BAROY BRANCH GETS BIGGER & BETTER

The branch has further strengthened its customer services going beyond the call of duty if need be.

As partner of the local government, the branch has been helping the people of Kapatagan improve their sources of livelihood through credit financing that stimulates economic activities in the area.

    ACCREDITED BY SSS MANILA

Keeping a commitment is a major deposit; breaking one is a withdrawal. In fact, there is probably not a more massive withdrawal than to make a commitment to others just to break it. The next time a commitment is made, they won’t believe it anymore.

People tend to build their hopes around commitment particularly those that pertain to their livelihood. If you cultivate the habit of always keeping the commitment you make, you build bridges of trust that widens the understanding between you and other people.

    ON KEEPING A COMMITMENT

When I was called to perform the task of a Gold & Gems appraiser, I had a hard time deciding whether to accept the responsibilities or not. I am terrified with the risks that the task entails but I know that overcoming my fear is a great achievement.

Now into my fourth year of service as Gold & Gems appraiser, I find my responsibilities challenging and fulfilling. I am proud to say that for the Gold & Gems portfolio at Kapatagan Branch has reached Php 3.9 M year ending 2008. BY: OSCAR MURALLON

WE ARE GOOD TO GO BY: GLEN C. BUCOG

The prospective staff for the soon-to-open Gingoog Branch were the first to undergo the pioneering ‘mock branch training’ held on 5-12 March 2009 at the 1st Valley Bank CDO Business Center in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. With simulation of actual branch operations, the participants were trained on how to operate and run a branch using actual cases and forms. The training enabled the participants to appreciate the best practices of the branches which they can bring to Gingoog when they start operations. Further, the participants were subjected to using the manual approach in performing the processes which helped them realize the actual flow and channels of all banking transactions. Facilitated by Cynthia Rudinas and Emily Enad, the seven-day training produced participants who are ready and good to go.

BUUG BRANCH CELEBRATES 5TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY BY: FILMOR M. GUTANG

March 15, 2009 is a red-letter day for Buug Branch as it celebrates its 5th year anniversary. The celebration started with a thanksgiving mass for the past years of fruitful services and for the brighter years of continued services to the clients.

The branch served snacks to their clients to show their appreciation and gratefulness for their loyal patronage to the bank. The celebration continued with a get together for the staff at Malangas Beach Resort.

Onwards, the staff has reaffirmed their commitment to deliver responsive solutions to the needs of its clients such as the agric supervised credit specifically created for the farmers in the locality, seafarer’s loan to meet the growing needs of the seamen and their families, micro-agric loan for multiple earning clients. The branch continues to provide excellent services such as providing cash in a flash with the Gold & Gems jewelry loan.

FROM SWEAT TO SWEET BY: PERLIE BEDUYA

1st Valley Bank -Dumalinao Branch has revved its drive to increase its savings deposit portfolio starting with motorcade and house-to-house campaigns to encourage and entice the local residents to open accounts or increase their savings at the branch.

Motivated and united by a common goal, the staff introduced the value of saving, the many benefits the residents can enjoy from the bank’s products and services, the mobility and convenience of G-Cash, as well as the cash in a flash they can get from Gold & Gems.

The staff is unmindful of their sweat from the scorching heat of the sun, the throbbing pain from their swollen muscles brought by their massive campaign.

Their efforts are paying off and their sweat has easily translated into sweet returns for the branch. Now more than ever, the branch has experienced stronger commitment from its clients and within three (3) months from the campaign, the branch has registered an increase in deposit of Php 1.6M.

All these we attribute to the hard work of each and every member of the branch and the support from the upper and top management.

MARGOS BRANCH REWIND BY: ERROL C. DIOSO

dmittedly, it’s hard to take over a branch that came from a management that has become a legend in PAR (Portfolio-At-Risk)

fighting and collection monitoring. As a matter of fact, almost all staff in the previous management of the branch has been promoted to higher positions.

When I took over Margosatubig Branch in 2007, I knew that I would be facing difficult challenges especially as far as branch performance in PAR fighting and collection monitoring is concerned. Together with all the new staff of the branch, we have the daunting task to at least maintain the legendary performance of the previous branch management.

But we were up to the challenges and we worked hard, most of the times even doubly hard, to meet expectations.

As the year ended in 2008, we were able to register respectable figures as far as branch performance is concerned. Assets grew by 15.48M, from 98.52M to 114M in December 2008. Loans portfolio increased by 16.56M, from 88.32M to 104.88M year-end. The increase in loan portfolio came from the following: 2.37M from DepEd, 4.54M from LGU, 6.21M from Barangay Livelihood, 1.56M from Agri/Agra, .59M from Gold & Gems, .79M from Pension Loan, and .5M from other loans. Savings deposit increased by 12.58M, from 41.96M to 54.54M where 8.6M are SD Plus and 4.42M are regular savings deposit.

Despite the increase in past due (PD) accounts, these accounts are now undergoing foreclosure proceedings. We will also have to do something about the unsecured salary loans which registered

an increase in PD notwithstanding the re-activation of our automatic payroll deduction agreement with the Local Government Unit of Lapuyan. The past due ratio is maintained at 1% on the average. On the other hand, ROPOA decreased by 469K from 935K to 466K by year end.

The branch’s gross income grew by 4.61M on year-to-year, from 23.35M to 27.97M while net income increased by 1.61M from 4.19M to 5.81M.

We were not only concerned with the figures, but also how our branch have attained said figures. With close coordination with our human resources

department, we have ensured that each and every member of the branch strictly complies with the highest standards of performance, norms of conduct, and ethics. As a matter of fact, one employee was discharged for grave

offense involving collections. On the other hand, our top management recognizes excellent performance as four employees of the branch were promoted- Peter Alfon from Branch Manager to Senior Management level, Demosthenes Solis from Assistant Manager to Branch Manager of Liloy, Frederick Paringit from Account Officer to Supervisory Level, and Gia Amabelle Catiloc from GL Bookkeeper to Assistant Branch Manager of Margosatubig. Another employee of the branch earned the privilege to be transferred to the branch near her residence.

The promotion given to the above mentioned employees paved the way for four new staff who were hired and regularized during the year – Girlie A. Pepito for Gold & Gems, Marchel Bacus as teller, Roger Maasin as Regular Loans Account Officer, and Dennis Omania as GL Bookkeeper.

old & Gems ended the year 2008 sparkling brighter as its portfolio increased by 150% compared to 2007, reaching 33.3M, and

contributing 4.6M to the total earnings of the bank. Each of the three (3) areas registered significant increases in their portfolio with Area 2 and Area 3 exceeding their targets.

I remember the time when we set up our annual target for 2008; all of the appraisers were hesitant to accept their required quota. In a reluctant manner, they said “the target is impossible” and

that “it’s so big”. But despite what seemed to be an impossible target to reach then, we were able to surmount the insurmountable. This achievement can be attributed to the teamwork, perseverance, and hard work of each and every Gold & Gems team members in the branches. A huge part of the success we would like to give thanks to our Almighty God who made it possible for the Gold & Gems team to end 2008 remarkably.

Moving forward, we have started another battle to surpass our remarkable figures of 2008. This year is a tough year for us as we face the global economic crisis. Yet we remain optimistic, as the author of ‘The Art of War’ said, “if you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.” We know that with our continued hard work, team work, competence, and drive to succeed, we will be able to reach our collective target of 70M loan portfolio, contributing 8M earnings to the bank.

We are fully equipped with the right armor on how to win our battle. The continued trust and support of the management, and our commitment to reach our target amidst challenges, we will be able to define another record for Gold & Gems.

    OUTREACH PROGRAMS

HANDOG SA KAPWA  On 6 February 2009, Friday, right after banking hours, the Pagadian City Branch headed by its Manager, Joel L. Luna, and some of the staff,

travelled an hour from the City to Barangay Tagulo, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur, where they were met by the local officials in the area, to personally visit and donate goods to forty eight (48) families residing in the area. The goods distributed to the indigent families include: rice, canned goods, noodles, coffee which were greatly appreciated by them. The outreach program dubbed by the Pagadian City Branch as “HANDOG SA KAPWA” is an annual event meant to share the blessings of the Branch to the indigent residents of the City. DAGHANG SALAMAT GIKAN SA ATONG KASINGKASING

The outreach program recently held by the Kapatagan Branch (K2) centers on gift-giving as a language of love and friendship, expression of gratitude, and symbol of piety in the form of charity. It is the branch’s voluntary way of sharing its blessings without requiring anything in return.

Headed by Neri B. Bliss, Branch Manager, and Dindo Suico, Assistant Manager, in coordination with the local officials in the area, the Kapatagan Branch staff donated several bags of goods to about fifty (50) indigent families in Barangay Suso, Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte.

The families demonstrated their gratitude through a song that says “Daghang Salamat.”

    BY: ROSELINE B. CABADOR

    HAVEN OF HAPPINESS

There is an old saying that goes, “no sight could have been sweeter; no music more touching than the soft mutter of words.”

Amused faces showed up when we stood at an empty lot beside a small chapel. There were children running in and out, mothers carrying their infants with them, residents of the place waiting for our next move. On that day, the small place at Nuñez Extension, Barangay Canelar Presa transformed into a haven of happiness for its residents.

The Zamboanga City Branch conducted its second annual outreach program that touched the residents’ hearts and made them feel special. We extended assistance to poor families in the area.

Nuñez Extension is one of the stumpy areas in the city and home to at least a hundred of marginal families. When you go to the place, you will see that their environment depicts the status of their living. One of our guards has been living in this kind of environment for many years now and he would attest how poverty made their lives an everyday battle for survival. Poverty is really about battling for food to eat and water to drink.

Realizing their plight, the branch donated bags of basic goods to about fifty (50) families in the area. The list of beneficiaries was prepared by our guard who has been living with these people for so long.

Naked hands received the goods with joy and gratitude. From an empty lot with amused faces, Nuñez Extension became a haven of happiness for people whose appreciation reached the heavens.

HOW IS 1ST VALLEY BANK ZAMBOANGA BRANCH TODAY?

fter one (1) year and six (6) months from its opening last 16 August 2007, Zamboanga Branch is growing stronger amidst the tough peace and order situation in the locality. The branch itself has experienced several attempts of extortion by the lawless elements in the society.

These difficult challenges did not deter the branch to perform its best. In fact, it even made the branch stronger and more courageous in facing its battles. The outcome? Take a look at these figures: asset grew to 112.40M, savings deposit reached 82.48M with 2,458 accounts, loans registered at 110.32M with 2,529

    accounts.

Headed by Felizardo A. Enad, the branch is composed of seven (7) regular staff, three (3) probationary staff, and four (4) security guards on duty.

The branch is currently setting its eyes on specific target market that other banks in the locality have not yet dared to reach, such as Gold & Gems and Micro Finance Loans.

We aim to be the one-stop-servicing financial institution in Zamboanga City with our diverse products and services.

OZAMIZ CITY BRANCH AT ITS BEST BY: ANNA PEARL BETE

Extraordinary Performance. This is how we are going to describe the performance of Ozamiz City under its new manager, Peter M. Alfon. The branch started the year 2008 with a tough battle and ended victoriously with the following figures: loans portfolio of 149.76M, savings deposit of 378.81M, assets of 399.25, and income of 2.02M.

Known to be workaholic and disciplinarian, our manager drove us to commit to the attainment of our targets. As a result, past due has significantly decreased, and collection monitoring reached a new level. Owing to the effectiveness of daily PAR monitoring, several accounts were updated.

We are also proud to say that while we remain committed to the achievement of our goals as a team, we respect and keep one another’s individuality. We recognize the value of each member of the team where trust and unity reign. We build our 1ST Valley Bank Ozamiz Branch family on these grounds.

Onwards to 2009, we shall continue the gains that we have started.

n the past few months, we have seen unthinkable things happening in the

n the strategic planning of the bank conducted earlier this year by Ms. Celeste Marie V. Lim, Vice President of MetroBank

Card Corporation, an important amendment to the medium term development plan of the bank was introduced – the institutionalization of the Credit Committee to tighten credit management. The Credit Committee has the main responsibility for the general approval of loans ensuring that these loans have satisfied all the requirements and conditions in accordance to the set policy and regulations of the bank. This means that all loan applications have to pass the Credit Committee for evaluation and approval. Initially, loans under the following programs are not subject to the process: Microfinance, Gold & Gems, and Supervised Credit.

It is seen that with the institutionalization of the Credit Committee, it is not only the tightening of credit management that will be effectively resolved but the amendment shall also improved the over-all effectiveness and efficiency of branch operations. Branches can now delegate more time to promote the products and services of the bank as well as

strengthen their relationship with their customers delivering customized financial solution whenever and wherever necessary.

The following are the standard procedures of the loan approval:

    1. Branches receive the loan applications in the prescribed form ensuring compliance

    with all requirements and

    complete documentation.

    2. Designated officers of the branches, usually the Assistant Branch Managers, accomplish the CRM or Credit Recommendation

    Memorandum and submit the same

    to the Credit Committee.

    3. Credit Committee evaluates and approves submitted applications for loans.

    4. Branches release the approved loans to the clients.

The Credit Committee is chaired by: Nicolette Lim-Gica, Vice President for Operations, Anavic A. Sarsale, Vice President/Controller, and Anne Estrera, Assistant Vice President. Members are Dennis George Feliciano for Area 1, Michael Abrogar for Area 2, and Marevic Poncardas for Area 3.

Talakag Financial Solution Center is capturing the microfinance market share in the locality. Customers are attracted to the low interest and built-in savings deposit scheme of our microfinance products. However, in the first quarters of our operations, we were also confronted with delinquencies, specifically portfolio-at-risk or PAR.

Facing the challenges, the Talakag team started to discuss how to go about with our PAR-fighting. We identified the factors that caused our delinquencies, and then we implemented our strategies to combat PAR based from the best practices of the bank and strictly adhering to the standards set forth by the MABS.

Our efforts paid well as the Talakag team was able to significantly reduce our PAR while earning a remarkable increase in loan portfolio of almost Php1M with 99 accounts.

The reduction of our PAR doesn’t mean that we can remain complacent. As a matter of fact, it serves as our motivating factor to be relentless in our pursuit to further reduce PAR at its acceptable level or even better.

Now, we continue to intensify our collection and monitoring strategies. As our Branch Manager Benedict Mutia constantly reminds us, our team should stay in focus and work together cooperatively to achieve success.

    TOUR OF DUTY

    AREA 3 CONDUCTS MICROFINANCE

    ACCOUNT OFFICERS FORUM

     BY: NOEL TABANIAG

With our strong belief that constant education and training is an integral component of success, the microfinance account officers of area 3 gathered in a forum to discuss the annual plan and strategies that the area will implement on microfinance.

The forum tackled the 2009 budget per branch as well as how to improve and ensure standardization of the process flow from marketing to renewal of loans.

The area 3 manager, Glenn A. Mendez, specifically discussed the importance and value of honesty. He further challenged each participant to be vigilant and diligent in their duties and responsibilities to contribute to the growth of the area’s microfinance portfolio. The area manager stressed that at the end of the day, their hard work will earn for them fruitful returns.

The forum was facilitated by Chanel Carbaquiel and Siaron Siaton, both area supervisors and attended by Glenn Bagaloyos, Fiel Enad, and Ervie Cane- all microfinance experts.

SUPERVISED CREDIT LOAN is a product of 1stValley Bank that is recently introduced to the people of Zamboanga Sibugay and Zamboanga Del Norte.

This loan product is the bank’s contribution to alleviate the effects of the global crisis in the areas where the product is offered.

1st Valley Bank understands the plight of the farmers who are the main beneficiaries of the Supervised Credit Loan. Owing to the high cost of rice production, majority of the farmers cannot keep up with their production making them earn way below their daily needs. As they say, “Ako ray naluoy…”

Pioneering the implementation of the loan product in the area is Buug Branch offering it to the locality as well as three other municipalities in the area – Bayog, Kumalarang, and Diplahan.

Farmers in the area are entitled to avail of the loan product that provides all the finances needed for their rice production. The bank only charges an interest rate of about 1.6% a month or 20% per annum that enables the

farmers to increase their rice product

farmers to increase their rice production and earn profitably.

Availing the supervised credit loan will certainly yield more gains than borrowing funds for capital from traders who charge higher interest rate. Unlike the compulsory agreement with the traders where the farmers are obliged to sell their harvest in a price controlled by the traders and where the farmers cannot demand, supervised credit loan empowers the farmers to choose where to sell their harvest in which they have full control of the price. This enables the farmers to get the most from their harvests.

Aside from financial support that the supervise loan product gives to the farmers, 1st Valley Bank Buug Branch also provides technical assistance to the farmers to help them how to grow and improve their

harvests. In fact, the bank empl

harvests. In fact, the bank hires the services of agriculturists specializing in rice production specifically for this purpose.

1st Valley Bank is doing everything to help the farmers enjoy bountiful and profitable harvest in their lifetime.

“Who’s that handsome gentleman from loans processing?” a blushing customer shyly expressed while waiting for her number to be called at the customer’s lounge at Maranding Branch, seven months ago.

That handsome gentleman the customer is referring to is none other than the branch’s loan processor, RODERICK T. VILDOSOLA, fondly called BHONG.

Bhong hails from Poblacion, Balabagan, Lanao del Sur. He is a Christian but speaks and understands Maranao well. He is a double degree holder having graduated from both BS Electronics and Communication Engineering Technology at MSU-IIT and BSBA Entrepreneurial Marketing at MSU-Marawi. His experience as an instructor and accounting staff prior to becoming part of the 1st

Valley Bank family has enabled Bhong to easily perform his duties and responsibilities. Aside from exercising due diligence, Bhong is known to be a hard worker and in less than the usual time, he is now the senior loans processor of the branch.

During one of the casual conversations with this writer, Bhong fondly expressed how grateful and happy he is to be part of the 1st Valley Bank family. “I am just glad that 1st Valley Bank accepted me knowing how high your standards are.”

When asked what makes him happy, Bhong teasingly said, “For months that I have been working with Maranding Branch, I have always been looking forward to each day of work with much fervor and excitement. Every single day is a challenge like the challenges of reality game shows Survivor and Fear Factor.”

“In my job as a loan processor, I encounter different people with different personalities. Although sometimes it is stressful to deal with difficult people, I still find my work fulfilling and exciting. Attitude matters. If you love your job, stress is immaterial or you will know how to handle your stress.” Bhong concluded the conversation by saying, “I am happy to be here. I have found not just my work but I have found good officemates, true friends. I have found a family in 1st Valley Bank.”

At the staff house where Bhong stays, he is considered as an all-in-one stand-in comedian of Punch Line, Laugh Line, and Metro Comedy Bar. With his comical antiques, he can easily satisfy thirst and hunger while waiting for meals to be served. He can offer soothing music as he perfectly sings well. He can give the best medicine as he can make you laugh endlessly. That’s Bhong, alive and vibrant, earning for him the moniker BUBBLE BHONG!

ipolog City Branch is set to reach 10M of microfinance loan

portfolio on or before the year ends. This is a 7.2M increase in the previous year’s microloan portfolio.

Although the figure is seen as gigantic, everyone accepted the challenge as they commit to work harder to realize the target.

The branch’s microfinance account officers are set to capture unexplored market

areas expanding to neighboring municipalities of Dipolog City.

The branch also plans to join the Dipolog Chamber of Commerce to expand its connections to small and medium enterprises in the City. Aside from the foreseen increase in MFU portfolio, the membership shall also be favorable to the branch’s other loan products and savings deposit. Being a member of the Dipolog Chamber of Commerce shall entitle the branch to showcase its products and services to the chamber.

For Gold & Gems, the branch sets 3M as its target for the year. The branch shall further strengthen its fast turnaround time that customers get their cash instantaneously.

Acknowledging the lapses in the bookkeeping system, everyone in the branch gave the assurance to do their part in straightening up the system.

Although challenges are difficult, Dipolog branch is set to reach its targets, resolve its bookkeeping issues, and overcome difficulties through determination and hard work.

LOW COST DEPOSIT, HIGH YIELDING LOANS  FOR MANUKAN FINANCIAL SOLUTION CENTER

    BY: JOHN PAUL B. HAYO

Increasing the market share through the promotion of low cost savings deposits and higher yielding loan products is the route that Manukan Financial Solution (FS) Center shall take this year to reach its targets.

Manukan FS has already started to market its low cost savings deposits to various business establishments in the locality where the FS offered them a pick-up deposit scheme. The FS is continuously visiting the schools where the value of saving and how the WAIS BOX of 1st Valley Bank can help them save are being presented to both elementary and high school students.

Simultaneously, Manukan FS reaches out to barangays, attending sessions, and explores the areas to promote high yield loan products of the bank such as Gold & Gems, Seaman’s Loan, Agri/Agra, and Microfinance.

Making it a point to know the market, Manukan FS will continue to deliver products and services that will provide timely and relevant solutions to the residents of the locality.

The President Speaks The President Speaks

During the annual strategic planning of the bank where we have reviewed in detail where we are in our medium term development plan, there came up lessons to be learned.

First, there are some changes that the bank needs to implement in these diffi cult times of global crisis. These changes may not be easily acceptable to everyone but empowers the bank to stay in control and emerge stronger than what we are today.

Second, each of us has to take our own defi nitive responsibilities and be willing to accept full ac-countability of our own actions. Time and again, I have always emphasized that the bank is not just about a single individual calling the shots. The bank has been and will always be a collab-orative effort of the best minds and the purest hearts with a common goal, that is to give noth-ing but the best service to our customers.

Third, our lives are practically tied to one anoth-er. Our personal success is dependent on the company, and the company is also dependent on how well we do our jobs. That said; we need to constantly keep ourselves relevant. This means that we should never stop learning and applying what we have learned into our respective jobs for the greater benefi t of the customers who we serve. After all, we certainly agree that our customers are the reason we are where we are

right now. It is but fi tting that we do everyth ing to exceed their expec-tations.

As the bank has always been gener-ous to us all, it wouldn’t hurt anyone of us to give back by doing our respective jobs with due diligence.

We have so much reason to be thank-ful that despite the global crisis and the rising unemployment, we are keeping our jobs. The least that we can do is to love our jobs.

If we love our jobs, our jobs will love us back. ☺

“Our personal success is dependent on the company, and the company is also dependent on how well we do our jobs.”

    LOVE OUR JOBS
