Hadrian´s wall was a defensive fortification in northern England.
The emperor Hadrian built the wall in 122 AD, when the Romans took over Britain and the country became rich, with farms and trade.
The wealth attracted northern tribes (the Picts), who lived in Scotland (North of Britain). They stole and burnt the farms.
To stop this, the Emperor Hadrian built a great wall across northern Britain.

The Roman Emperor Hadrian visited Britain in AD 122. According to the stone found in Jarrow (date 118), it was Hadrian's wish to keep "intact the empire," and announce the building of the wall.
Hadrian’ s wall today
This wall was the first of
two fortifications built across Great Britain. The second wall was Antonine Wall, less important for us. The second wall was constructed in 142 AD by the new emperor Antoninus (after Hadrian). Antonine´s Wall was built 160 kilometers further in the north.

Hadrian’s Wall was the most heavily fortified border in the Empire. The wall was used like a military fortification.
Hadrian's Wall was 120 Kilometers. The wall has:
1. small forts called milecastles.
2. a lot of towers called turrets.

The soldiers who patrolled the wall lived in barracks in the milecastles.
In front of Hadrian's Wall there was a ditch, that acted as an extra defense.
A road was built behind the wall. This road communicated all Hadrian's wall, and soldiers could move better when the enemies were quick. Roman

ROMAN ROADS The Romans were good builders. They built
Hadrian's wall and other constructions in Britain. The Romans constructed a lot of roads. These roads were used by the soldiers, by the traders and travelers. The Romans built their roads in straight lines.

An important portion of the wall still exists (the mid-section). The wall can be followed on foot by Hadrian´s Wall Path or by bike on National Cycle Route 72. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England, where it is often known simply as the Roman Wall, or the Wall. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage in 1987.
English government describes Hadrian's wall as "the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain".
