Paninis. What would we do without it. Went inthere to talk to the boss. The new bossthat is. As you know Ollie bought outAngelo one year ago. Ollie’s broadScottish accent betrays his origin in thewest of Scotland but as with his wife Vera,Vera’s sister Milly and Angelo he is ofItalian descent. In fact all their respective parents
emigrated to the UK from the same smallvillage Picinisco near Monte Cassino. It isnow about 14 years since Angelo openedup Paninis transforming what was a smalland dusty English bakers shop, selling
bread and pies, into the pavement caféwe all enjoy.Italian they all may be but the menus on
the walls show a keen insight into thedietary habits of the locals. Eggs friedpoached or omeletted, bacon, ham, beans, toast and sandwiches (andPaninis) of all sorts and sizes. Not aGnocchi in sight but the best Cappucinosin town.Behind the glass counter are the girls.
Did you know they are all graduates?Aliona is from St Petersburg has an
Economics degree and one day willprobably be the first female President ofRussia. She heard about this job throughher Godmother. (That was Lucy who leftPaninis at Christmas).Agnieszka, also known as Bluey (the
eyes) is from Lubin near Wroclaw inPoland about 100kms from the Germanborder. She studied Child Psychology.Justina graduated in Law andAdministration. Amazingly enough shealso comes from Lubin though she hadto travel from Poland to Hadley Wood

before meeting Agnieszka. Marianna is aqualified teacher and is from Rumania. So next time you order some food justbear in mind that you are dealing withsome very smart young ladies. There areenough brains here to run John Lewis.Mind you, remembering all the complexorders is not easy. ‘Cup of tea love twosugars, one coffee no sugar, two eggsfried and bacon for me please, he’ll havethe same but poached not fried. Soft forme. toast, brown please with butter. I’llhave a few tomatoes as well. Oh andketchup. Thanks love. We’re over there’.All managed calmly efficiently andquickly. HWA Car park. For those of you not familiar with theHadley Wood Association Car Park it isthe parking area just past the TennisCourts in Crescent East. It is really for theuse of staff and other users of the HadleyWood Association. However over the past few years it has
become clear that it is a useful parkingarea for parents taking their children tothe Hadley Wood Primary school. TheAssociation has permitted this facility freeof charge on the basis that it is a help tolocal parents. Two problems have resulted from our
neighbourly attitude. Commuters havestarted using the drive down to the carpark parking with two wheels on theverge and thus converting the two wayaccess road to one way. No amount ofnotices on these cars has stopped thispractice which has caused extensivedamage to the verge and endlessirritation to users. The other problem isthat heavy use of the car park has causedits rapid disintegration only five yearsafter it was last resurfaced. The Association under Graham Sharp
the Chairman has thus had to raise
£45,000, a big sum for what is basically avillage hall. Happily we have received agrant of £10,000 from the Enfield Council(please see the letter from PaulMcCannah) which has been a major helpand for which we are very very grateful.Work will start in August during whichtime the car park will be closed. Twoimportant issues remain. How do we prevent commuters leaving
their cars there all day and how can wemake some modest charge to carpark users to fund the inevitable repairsin about 10 years time? These issuesare under discussion at the momentand we would welcome any sensiblesuggestions.
Parking at the shops inCrescent West.It is clear that the current parking systemoutside our shopping parade is not
helpful to retailers or customers. Thepetition asking Enfield for help with a newsystem collected 400 names andaddresses and was delivered to theCouncil on July 17th.Since then we have received their reply
stating that they received the petition andwill now endeavour to secure funding toprogress the surveys and consultationsnecessary to introduce Pay and Displayat the shops. They point out thatobtaining the views of all concerned andthen designing the best possible schemeis a lengthy and expensive process. They also mention that the Council has
no free period in any of its on-street Payand Display areas and that currentlyapproved charges range from 30p for 15mins to £2.40 for up to 2 hours. Thisseems a positive and realistic responsefrom the Council and we look forward tothe consultation process.HWA

Conversations withTom Adams. WW2 pilotHow often do you find yourself talking toa humorous 91 year old who has flownTiger Moths, Hurricanes and Spitfires?Rarely? Quite. I went to see him. Shirleyhis wife of 60 years, sits by calmlypassing out the tea and cakes andmakes the (very) occasional correction.Tom lived in Beech Hill Avenue, HadleyWood as a young man, eventuallyleaving school and starting to train as asurveyor in Fleet St. Salary £1 a week. Then the war started. After a short spell inthe Home Guard (based in the HadleyWood Golf Club) he cleared his desk andaged 19 years set off to join the RAF.With 50 other hopefuls on August 18th1941 he was summoned to Lord’scricket ground to experience thetraditional Medical Examination. (In thosedays this involved sticking ones tongueout and dropping one’s trousers). There

can’t be many people who can boast ofthat experience in the hallowed LongRoom at Lords. He was then billetednear the Zoo ‘rather appropriately” saysTom, at the Air Crew Receiving Centre.ACRC known to all and sundry as ArsyTarsy. At this stage of the war, America ingeneral and General Arnold in particularhad offered the British governmenttraining programmes in America forpilots. Preliminary training in the UK wasset up and Tom, amongst others, waschosen. This meant going for basictraining at St Andrews in Scotland. “FirstI was at the home of cricket and then thehome of golf” said Tom. “I did try playinggolf on the Old Course but golf ballswere five shillings each and I only hadthree. Had to give up after three holes asI had lost them all!” Whilst there theywere all given various injections andvaccinations. One day they were beingmarched about the parade ground ( at40 paces/min) by a regular RAF corporal. They had to shout out their numbers.“Numbering off from the left” ordered
the Corporal. The squaddies responded.ONE TWO THREE. The seventh chaphad a very high voice, SEVEN came outin a penetrating falsetto. “ I thought you’dbeen inoculated not castrated’ roared theCorporal. Tom shakes with laughterthinking about it.Examinations were passed and Tom

actual flying training. Never having beenin an airplane in his life he started off in aTiger Moth with the instructor behind him.Open cockpits and goggles. In January.“Some of the lads who went on to fly overEurope had never left their villages beforethe war, never mind our shores”. Tom tellsme soberly. Seven hours in Tiger Mothsfollowed over the next three weeks andhe was deemed suitable for the Americancourse. Sailing to the USA in the ChateauThierry, Tom remembers the trip mainlyfor being hungry.Only two meals a day and no canteen.
Once there they were greeted by a largeTexan with a gun in his holster telling theyoung Brits to do as they were told orthey would be shot.“The Yanks had only been in the war for
three weeks at that stage and weresupposed to be on our side” says Tomwryly. Eventually he reached Lakeland inFlorida to receive the promised training.Three ten week courses in Stearman PT
17 biplanes learning to glide, deal withmock engine failure and learning to getout of spins (a deadly problem in thoseearly aeroplanes). The course lastednine months with 25% of the intake failing
the course. Not Tom. Next was GeorgiaAlabama for experience in HarvardTrainers alongside young Americantrainees. The Americans had variousmarching songs. ’Nothing can stop theArmy Air Corps’ they sang as theymarched. “Except the weather” sang theBrits joyfully in response. Not that thebanter was one sided. How did younavigate the planes I ask. “Just visually”replies Tom. “The Mississipi was a usefullandmark” One evening off a week forsocializing.Down in that part of America there was
much poverty especially among the blackcommunity. Blacks had a low profile andit was only in the last year of the war thatthey started coming through as flyers.“Hard to imagine or understand now”says Tom “But that’s how it was in thosedays” Tom passed everything including agunnery course and in 1942 wascommissioned as a Pilot Officer.Anxious to see some action he was
disappointed to be sent as an instructorto Greenville to teach new batches oftrainees in Vultee Valiants. “We called ‘emVultee Vibrators” chuckles Tom. Finally hewas sent back to the UK on the Queen
Elizabeth. Unescorted. This caused acertain amount of consternation as Uboats were sinking a lot of Allied shippingat that time. All went well however and he was sent
to a centre near Shrewsbury on a finaltraining course before joining an RAFsquadron. Then to Egypt and Palestineon the Capetown Castle and eventuallyPoona for a course on liaison with theArmy, low level flying and jungle survival. Finally he was moved to Burma where
he and the rest of his squadron flyingmostly Hurricanes were to harry theretreating Japanese. “The Hurricaneswere fairly old and battered” grins Tom.“We flew from Meiktelah south ofMandalay”.Their job was to support Allied troops
on the ground, identifying enemypositions and photographing theirwhereabouts. They were often rewardedwith bullet holes through their fuselages.“What about parachute training?” I ask.“No parachutes” says Tom. “Too close tothe trees. You really did not want to godown in the jungle anyway. The Japs didnot like us. They took no prisoners”.Tom’s squadron flew in pairs along the

They met at a partyin Camlet Way and celebrated theirDiamond wedding last month. I leave himlaughing and cheerful as always. “Comeback and see me soon” he says.Rod Armstrong
Older Women’sco-housingI posted information early this year on anexciting pioneer development for those
interested in planning for later years. Thisis the Older Women’s CohousingCommunity in Union St. High Barnet. It will be the first community of its kind
in the country-that is run for and by anolder group of individuals signed up to beneighbourly. Barnet granted planningpermission for this in April. Now as tender documents are
prepared for the necessary demolitionand construction process we as a groupare looking for additional members-thosewho can buy and those who are eligibleto rent. Two thirds of the flats will be for
purchase and a third will be rented onhousing association terms. All the flats will have balconies or patios
and are a reasonable size. We will have acommon room and guest room and willshare a large garden and vegetablepatch which we intend to work betweenus. Completion of the project is set forsometime in 2015.Meanwhile we are recruiting. We have
held an information drop-in in June withplans and a 3 dimensional model. Youcan get further information onwww.owch.org.uk and there is a similarbut mixed gender scheme in Muswell Hillat www.cohousingwoodside.co.ukAngela Ratcliff
Bonfire and FireworksNight 2013After considerable thought anddiscussion, it is with regret that we haveto announce that the Hadley WoodAssociation will not be hosting Fireworksnight this year. This decision has not been taken lightly
as we know how many of you in ourcommunity enjoy this event and haveattended for many years. There are two principal reasons for this
decision: First, as I know you willappreciate, the administrative burdenin organising this event is considerable

long valleys lined by hills. They had tokeep beneath the cloud canopy in orderto see where they were and to observeenemy activity. “Worst moment?” I ask. “Itwas quite difficult to judge when to pullup at the end of the valley” says Tom. “Onone occasion I had to pull up the planevery steeply when the auxiliary fuel tankwhich was in use was torn off. The enginestalled immediately. Not a goodmoment”.That was Friday 13th July three weeks
before the war ended. He shows me hisLog book. One laconic report describes aflight in a Spitfire. ‘Oil on windscreenduring inverted flight’ You wonder at theskill of these young men keeping thosepatched up planes in the air. Eventually
As you will all be aware, our Primaryschool is quite little compared to most,so you can imagine our excitementwhen, on Thursday 4th July a group ofYear 4 children from Hadley WoodSchool represented Enfield in theBalfour Beatty sponsored LondonYouth Games, which were held atCrystal Palace National Sports Centre. The London borough of Enfield was
one of 32 London boroughs whoparticipated in the games. We won ourright to represent our authority bywinning the All Enfield tournamentearlier in the term.We are especially grateful to Chris
Hepworth from the Hadley WoodTennis Association and to theAssociation themselves who allow ourclasses to use the courts for their
lessons. It is obviously working verywell! The Games began with a ‘round
robin’ box league tournament. HadleyWood played Fox Primary from theborough of Kensington andWestminster, New End Primary fromCamden and Birkbeck Primary fromBexley. Hadley Wood successfully wonthrough to the next round and wereonly finally defeated in the semi-finals.Congratulations to Jasper Wax,
Reanne Gardner, Thadeus Hays andTallulah Miel who all played brilliantlyand showed great sportsmanship. This was a fantastic opportunity for thechildren and a truly memorable day forall those who took part. Well done,Hadley Wood School!Niki Michaleides

Congratulations to Hadley Woodresidents Michael Gavin (40) son Conor(13) and Michaels father Martin (68).These three generations of the Gavin
family took part in the Josie ReddingtonFoundation Charity Cycle in Irelandcounties Mayo & Galway on SaturdayJune 2013. Starting and ending atBohola the route included Castlebar,Westport Ballinrobe Claremorris, Knockand Kilmagh. Both Michael and his father
undertook the 100 mile bike ride whileson Conor did the 13 mile ride.
Altogether they raised over £950 for thisFoundation. It was Michael Gavin andhis firm MPG Ltd that in 2011 wereresponsible for a major voluntaryproject at Hadley Wood PrimarySchool, including installing severalplanters, clearing the pond area andlaying several tons of shingle. This made a huge improvement to
the school surroundings. It was a mostgenerous and community mindedgesture which has been widelyappreciated by the children at theschool, their parents and the staff.

From Councillor PaulMcCannah. My ward colleagues and I have recentlybeen pleased to support Hadley Woodresidents to secure funding from EnfieldCouncil for two important local projects.Readers will be aware that the communityplayground has recently beentransformed from a rather run-down andunappealing facility into a modern, attractive and accessible facility for localresidents and their children. This is the result of the tireless work of
a number of local families who developedthe vision for the new playground andraised very significant sums of moneytowards the renovation. As part of their fundraising efforts the
parents approached my ward colleaguesand I to see whether we could secure anyfunding from Enfield Council. We were pleased to work with them on
this and delighted to be able to secure£20,000 towards the costs of the newplayground.Last month, working in partnership with
the Hadley Wood Association, wesecured £10,000 towards the cost ofresurfacing the car park. The original bid for this was actually
submitted in 2012 but there have beensome legal issues which slowed thingsdown considerably. However, we eventually managed to
resolve these satisfactorily. The playground and the car park are
well-used facilities that help to makeHadley Wood an even better place to liveand we hope that residents will enjoy theenhanced facilities.Paul McCannah Councillor
Letter from AmericaI have just been catching up with the HWnews. I was particularly interested in thearticle about the Proms, especially theanecdote relating to Carl Orff''s CarminaBurana (I hope I've spelt that correctly!) Iremember enjoying the TV productionimmensely and was highly amused whenthe local paper referred to it in their TVguide as Carmina Miranda. An exotic Brazilian singer and dancer
who was very popular at that time wascalled Carmen Miranda.I also recall that one passage of the
catchy music was used as backgroundmusic in an advert for Old Spice AfterShave.
And a joke went the rounds about aman who took his dog into a pub andasked the bartender if he would give hima free drink if he could prove the dogcould talk. When he agreed he asked thedog to name a choral composer and itgave a husky growl of orff. The bartender wasn't impressed and as
they left the dog looked up dejectedlysaying "maybe I should have saidShostakovich”. I have wasted enough ofyour time with my remniscences !Regards Guy Davies

Dog ShowIt is always a joy to see people from allacross our community flock to an eventon a sunny day, and even better whenthey bring their dogs with them!Especially compared to last year whenthe rains poured incessantly from thedark skies and threatened the wholeevent. Nothing stops Barnet dog loversthough, a true pedigree breed we are!Monken Hadley Church of England
School held their Summer Fayre andDog Show on the 13th July in soaringsunny temperatures on Monken HadleyCommon. It was an event shared by the
parishoners of St. Mary’s Church who puton a very tasty ‘Cream Tea’ for those ofus who prefer a cuppa to a cold Pimms.
This was to raise money for ChurchFunds. There was a cooling bar, a sizzlingBBQ and lots of stalls and activities forthe many children. The Ice Cream van had a perpetual
queue and the bouncy castle neverstopped bouncing. The parents andFriends of Monken Hadley ran a largevariety of stalls from Teddy Tombola toBottle Tombola, and there was plenty of
fundraising for great charities such asGhana Link.Lets not forget the dogs. They came in
all shapes and sizes, from a puppy in apink pushchair to shaggy rescue dogsand perfectly presented pedigrees.Every dog was a winner, with rosettes forall and prizes for many.
The competition made us all sigh withadmiration and laugh out loud at thehilarious doggy (and human) antics! The event was to mainly to raise money
for the school. Sadly the need for extrafunding for the very basics within everyschool is becoming more and morenecessary.
The Friends of Monken Hadley havebeen raising money over the last coupleof years to provide much needed ICTequipment and new playgroundequipment. The children have been enjoying new
ways of learning using online sites such aMathletics. Parents are also benefittingfrom regular blogs produced by thechildren, giving us an insight into theirdays at school. Our day on Monken Hadley Common
was a truly British Summer Festival, enjoyed by all the community. Ourgrateful thanks to the many people whovolunteered and made this possible, fromschool, Church, our neighbours andsponsors, and the Monken HadleyCommoners of course; for everyone’skindness and good spirit.Days like this are happy days, to be
enjoyed, savoured and rememberedfondly, until next year!
