STORY OF THE WEEK: Commotion in the Ocean – Giles Andreae
These tasks are on Education City
These tasks will need some adult input/support
These tasks could be completed independently by your child once they are given the instructions.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED)
Communication and Language
(C&L)
Physical Development (PD)
Making relationships (ELG )
I can show sensitivity to others’ needs and feelings, and form positive relationships with adults and other children.
Is there someone you know who has spent a lot of time on their own recently? Maybe a relative or friend who lives alone. Could you make them a picture, card or even write them a letter to send in the post. How do you think they will feel when they receive their post? Is there anything else you could do to help keep them happy?
Listening (ELG)
I listen to stories, accurately anticipating key events and respond to what I hear with relevant comments, questions or actions.
Education City:
The Cunning Chamaeleon
Vowels Sing-a-long
Speaking (ELG)
I can use past, present and future forms accurately when talking about events that have happened or are to happen in the future.
Education City:
Picnic packed up
Moving and Handling (ELG+)
I hold paper in position and use my preferred hand for writing, using a correct pencil grip. I am beginning to be able to write on lines and control letter size.
Ongoing through writing tasks.
Fine motor skills:
Rice Krispy Starfish
Cut a star fish shape out of paper and put glue over it. Use your pinchy fingers to place each rice krispy onto your star fish. Try not to squish the rice krispy. You can stick them on just place them on the star.
Health and Self-Care (ELG+)
I know about, and can make healthy choices in relation to, healthy eating and exercise.
If you haven’t tried it yet – choose a PE with Joe Wicks to get your heart racing!! How do you feel at the end?
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ
Can you make up your own PE with Joe routine? You could write it down and take a picture for Tapestry and I could have a go at it! Be kind though, I’m not as fit as I’d like to be!!

Reading (ELG+)
Our book this week is:
Commotion in the Ocean – Giles Andreae
If you don’t have the book, here it is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pRhgZ8Jffs
Can you remember some of the sea creatures inside the book? Which is your favourite?
Did you notice any rhyming words? Look back through the book and see if you can spot them. Is there a pattern in the rhyme?
See if you can think of some words to rhyme with these underwater sea words:

(worksheet attached to email/on website)
Use this link to read some different books about the ocean, they are a little tricky so you might need some help:
https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/digital_books/1257.html
https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/interactives/12943.html
Rainbows – try to practise your reading at least four times this week. It’s really important to keep practising this especially this term!
If you don’t have any appropriate books, remember the Oxford Owl website which is fantastic!

Phonics
I can spell phonically regular words of more than 1 syllable as well as many irregular but high frequency words.
Try these phonics lessons from letters and sounds:

Writing (ELG+)
I can spell phonically regular words of more than 1 syllable as well as many irregular but high frequency words.
Who am I?
Describe one of the ocean creatures using sentences such as ‘I am big and blue. I have sharp teeth’ – use all of your senses to describe your animal. Remember capital letters and full stops and try to hear all the sounds in each word. See if you can spell the words yourself (grown ups – the spellings do not need to be correct, just phonetic). Can your grown up guess which sea creature you have described?
Alternatively children could draw one of the sea creatures and label it with describing words.
Number (ELG)
I can estimate a number of objects and check quantities by counting up to 20
It is really important to be able to make good estimates in maths. It helps us spot little mistakes in our calculations when we get older. This week we are going to focus on making sensible estimations of objects and then check by counting carefully. Have a look at this PowerPoint:
https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-n-7224-magical-estimation-and-counting-powerpoint
Ask someone to fill some jam jars, bowls with different objects (up to 20). See if you can estimate how many objects are in each one, try to make it a sensible estimate. Then check if you were close by counting them carefully.
You could go round your house and estimate all sort of things… how many spoons in your cutlery draw, how many towels in your airing cupboard, how many cars on your road.
Try these challenge cards…. You don’t need to print them out, if you don’t have a printer you can just look at them on the screen:

Topic Tool – Counting
Jack in the box
The World (ELG+)
I know the properties of some materials and can suggest some of the purposes they are used for. I am familiar with basic scientific concepts such as floating, sinking, experimentation.
Underwater guessing game: Try and use the clues to find out what sea creature is hiding:
https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-t-5515-under-the-sea-what-am-i-interactive-powerpoint-game
Have a look at the different underwater sea habitats

You could watch these national geographic videos:

Or if you want a really good look into the ocean:

Education City:
Creatures of habitat
Expressive Arts and Design (EAD+)
Exploring and using media and materials (ELG)
Through my explorations I find out and make decisions about how media and materials can be combined and changed.
Make some colourful sea creatures from the book:

Jelly fish in a bottle:

Sounds of the Ocean
Have a listen to the ocean sounds – close your eyes and imagine the creatures you could see. Can you move to the music and pretend to be different sea creatures. See if someone in your family can guess which sea creature you are.
