Process

I am a process-oriented painter. I like to figure out my problems on the surface of the

panel. When I see an image I want to paint, I will figure out how to make it happen by trial

and error. Photography is a great tool and visual aid to remind me of what I see from life.

The goal is to take many reference pictures, as many as possible so that I can have a wide

selection to choose from. The next step is the screening process. I look at the reference

photos one by one, and look for interesting spaces I can have fun with. If not motivated to

do a painting by the photo, the process starts again. There needs to be an exciting

composition to look at, high contrasts between darks and lights. I paint using high key

color contrasts.

Once I find an image that I find exciting, I use Photoshop to change the contrast, the color,

and the composition. I print it out, and post it as a reference. I start out with an under

painting, an imprimatur wash, to locate the lights and shadows. The paint is applied thinly

in layers to create a polished glowing look.

Materials The materials used are, oil paint on panel.

I sand down the panels for a smooth finish, apply a layer of rabbit skin glue to seal

the wood, and then apply three to four layers of oil primer before applying the

Imprimatura wash. The paint is applied with a generous amount of medium during the

layering process.
